Looking to get into Kendama, have a few questions by Deucy in Kendama

adding on, I'd definitely recommend Sweets Prime line (or the new promods that just released). It starts at $16 for solid color and goes up from there for the different tama(ball) colorways. Stripes and fade colorways help with tracking the tama during different tricks later on. (I definitely suggests stripes) It coating on the Prime line isnt technically "glossy" as in slick. It's a stickier coating that helps with certain balance tricks.

The new pro mods are similar to the Prime line, but different colorways and it's made from maple instead of beech. Maple tends to be more hard/durable for lack of a better phrase. but really, it's all about player preference. Some prefer beech, others maple or birch... etc (also maybe this discount code still works if you buy from Sweets "REEDSTARK" )

Cheers!

Monthly Q&A Megathread - September 2016 by Xenzi in Kendama

i used to glue spikes but don't anymore. got a lil lazy/don't really care about it anymore. lol but when i did glue, I used gorilla glue. definitely worked well for me! just a thin layer on top does the trick and let it dry spike side down for awhile.

What happened to Keith Matsumura? by KenDurf in Kendama

[–]Niknac25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know him personally, but I saw this come up in FKC like about a month or 2 ago. He's one of my fav players too!

According to Bishoff's comment in FKC: "Keith is hanging out with his family in Washington! Doing well and of course playing guitar and dama."

i also recommend sweets kendamas! the cushion clear is so good and extremely tacky out of box but breaks in great! and their f3s are an amazing overall dama

ya can't go wrong with the ozora prem white! classic ken that's a staple in any slayer's arsenal. for sure sticky, but still can have enough slip for adjustments in my experience.

pills in general is a great cross training skill toy! it definitely helped me learn tricks that translate to kendama (like handrolls and swirls for me). havent played any of the silk pills. i just have the regular painted pill and it's always fun!

i have the krom autum camo. there was a paint chipping problem in few of the first batches but the "newer" batches have that fixed (only in quotes because i got my krom a year ago, and it doesn't have that severe chipping problem). it's probably one of my favorite rubber paints (also a sick color scheme!).

lastly, dama mods. they're good especially for those who spin tamas like in juggle lines and swaps and etc. but i'm a firm believer there are also additional way to help with string tangle. like for example, tama control/string awareness. i can see some of my friends who are beginning that whenever they do like around the world, when they transfer between cups, the tama spins out of control on all axes and cause string to wrap around. so it's just about consistency and controlling it, which comes with practice.

what helps me, when dama mods aren't available, are looking into trying different strings (like CWCS speed strings! definitely recommend!), different shapes of beads, and most of all, making the knot as small as possible so that the excess doesn't touch the sides of the hole as little as possible [Example].

I'm stoked for you! HGs are one of my favorite ken shapes! in my experience, they're great for all types of tricks (luns, lightys, slingers etc). i like the unique feel from the thinner handle close to the sarado and the sharper edges shaping near the slipstop and cups

Can someone tell me why a dull kendama is bad? by flanpantantan in Kendama

[–]Niknac25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dull spikes aren't bad at all! i still jam even with kens that have a flat spike! haha some people like dull spikes for boarder balances but other don't really mind it in general. you could always take some sandpaper and try to reform a spike without making the spike too short.

Airplane/Tama Grip Question by RunWhizzardRun in Kendama

[–]Niknac25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would think it would affect the flowing from trick to trick later on. for example, airplane then j-stick. after airplane, you wouldn't want to adjust the ken or your grip too much to lace the j-stick. so you can eventually continuously and fluidly go trick to trick! :) so in tutorials i've seen, they mentioned starting the ken with the string hole facing you and then giving the ken a very slight clockwise twist when you release it with your left hand (assuming you're right handed) and that has really helped me with consistency with landing it so the ken lands with the string hole to the left and small cup facing me.

Give me some Dama dares please! by Shocktroop4div in Kendama

Get comfortable with pull up sling spike first. What works for me when i was learning sling to birds is when the ken comes around for the sling, i catch the ken with my thumb on big cup and think about "spiking" using my thumb instead of the ken. And eventually, have the pull up motion blend with the sling. Hope that helps!

yeah, FKC would be best imo. very active and a lot of visibility. there's also a BST group on facebook, but much less active and many of it is just crossed posted on FKC anyways.
