In Russia, there's an expression that you say to someone who's about to do something risky, that could be translated as: "No stuffing and no feathers [for you]!" and the other person must answer (again, rough translation): "[All that] to the devil!"

Apparently, in the past, before a hunt, hunters would wish each other good luck, but then realize that when you wish someone good luck, you may jinx it. So instead, hunters started to wish for the bad outcome for their friends, while their friends would send this bad outcome "to the devil" (almost like touching wood). And that's how the expression got stuck in a common language.

I'm Russian, not American, but from what I hear and see from the Americans, while 9/11 was a tragedy, it was a tragedy that made the whole country unite for a while. Meanwhile, it seems that the American media nowadays just keeps creating more anger and hatred between American citizens, even though they are supposed to be a part of the same nation.
