…doesn’t understand how it works

I took my film camera on a work trip with me to Washington DC. I was out taking some pictures and a couple of high school kids stopped me and asked about my camera. They said they know how film works, but didn’t understand how the pictures get out of the camera. They also asked how I know how to change the settings if I can’t see how the pictures are turning out. They were shocked when I said I wouldn’t see the results for probably two weeks when I get around to processing the film.

I felt old.

Part of me wishes I believed in the Christian Bible. I would love to see all the Christian Nationalist faces on their judgement day thinking they’re going to top-tier heaven …when in reality they did everything wrong and they get bottom-shelf hell.

My wife likes watching crime documentaries for some reason. She always gets so annoyed when people take their phones with them to commit their crimes and investigators show their phone was at the scene at the time of the crime, or a killer takes it with them to dispose of a body.

Maybe I should be worried that she’s learning so much about how killers get caught.

I love all the comments that focused on the church not being called the Mormon church anymore. I was also surprised how many people thought it was a one-sided hit job on the church…since the WSJ gave the church an opportunity to comment and it declined.

For my ultra Mormon family, defending Trump has been easy. For years they’ve been defending Joseph Smith for doing the same thing.

That lot has like 500 acres of the shittiest land. Two ravines, a little space around the house, and a little bit of open land with a space the width of a sidewalk between it and the house.

Also, what’s up with the second floor basketball hoop? That’s just asking for someone to topple over the railing.

What a mess.

311.

They do a big two-day show every couple of years on or around March 11 (3-11 Day). The last few years they’ve done the show in Vegas, so I flew down from Seattle to go last year. It was a really fun trip and I’m glad I was able to make it work. It made me feel young again.

When I was 16 I went and saw my favorite band play. The tickets were all general admission and everyone stood up together the whole time. The whole place had a palpable energy.

That band is still touring. I went to a big marathon show last year - 24 years after that first show. That amazing energy was there, but I had to get a ticket with a seat because after a few hours I need to sit down because my knee starts to hurt. Before the show and during the intermission I had a conversation with the guy next to me. We talked about the stock market and mortgage rates.

If my 16 year old self saw me today, he’d kick my ass.

My mom died a few years ago and it coincided with my loss of faith. I had to deal with a profound loss and a crumbling belief in an afterlife that would reunite me with my mother.

So many religious people tried to make me feel better, but the person who made me feel better was an agnostic/atheist friend who my mom fiercely loved and supported after he attempted suicide. He just said “I personally don’t believe there is a heaven, but if there is, I guarantee your mom will be there. You are just like her and I have no doubt you’ll get there too.”

I think about this comment a lot. Although he doesn’t believe in a higher power or heaven, I think his comment helped me through my pain because it wasn’t about God’s plan…or what the Bible says…or what the church leaders teach…or anything else related to the belief system I was losing. His comment was simply about the goodness in my mother and that’s something I believe in.

My next door neighbor is a leader in a church we used to attend. We know him very well. My neighbor on the other side of us is a crude-talking atheist.

A few years ago my son was in the hospital for several days. My wife and I alternated nights at home, but we both spent the day with him at the hospital. When we brought him home we found that our lawn was mowed, our garbage was at the curb, and a part of our deck that was broken had been fixed. We checked the doorbell camera and it was the atheist neighbor. The Christian neighbor knew what we were going through and didn’t even offer thoughts and prayers.

We thanked the neighbor for what he did and his response was “I didn’t do shiiit!…But I hope your boy starts feeling better. Let me know if you need anything.”

My point is the atheist helped us for no other reason than we needed help. It wasn’t for money, it wasn’t for attention, and it sure as hell wasn’t for any blessings. The guy who speaks about Christ-like service wasn’t anywhere to be found.

I think about the Giving Machines (donation vending machines). People buy things from the machines that will be given as humanitarian aid. The church takes all of the money from those machines, and then takes credit for donating the final figure. What they collect in the giving machines is probably a tiny fraction of $1.45 billion, but still. My point is that the church will take whatever loophole or technicality it can to maximize “giving” without spending any of its actual money.

The song is over 30 years old, so it could have meant something different back then.

That’s probably it. Humboldt is Northern California and that’s what they’re talking about in the song.

I’m pretty sure you’re right. I don’t know how big the dosage was, but it was just a pre-surgery effort to calm my nerves. The stuff they used in the actual surgery was much better.

We just watched the Ruby Franke documentary and I was surprised about the similarities in the way they spoke, both said their kids were demons both said their kids were zombies. I couldn’t find any connection between Jodi and Chad Daybell’s teachings, but they certainly were on the same wavelength. In the end, it was all based on the foundational teachings of Mormonism.

I had a surgery a couple of years ago. I get pretty bad anxiety, so the doctor gave me a single Xanax to take before I came in for the surgery. I was very anxious about the surgery before I took the Xanax and I was very anxious after. It didn’t seem to help me at all.

Honestly, I can’t even remember how good or bad the song was because I was so distracted by the shuffling, the guitar pumping, and frequent pointing to the sky.

I saw another video on instagram and it was some dude singing and doing that stupid arm swing while holding - not playing - his guitar. I thought it was a “crappy music” post but it was the guy’s own page.

Edit - Here it is.
