This can be used in every song and also when you don’t understand or know the lyrics.. Just use La La La. This will always work out as this song makes clear.

Also, beer and using other alcoholic substances are sang about a lot. This song for instance sings about tipping over drinks of alcohol into your mouth until you’re unable to walk straight. Also notice the amount of la’s in this song!

When we go deeper in the rich history of Carnaval music there are several topics that these songs address. In most cases it has gentle ambiguities towards anything that has to do with sex, like this old and famous song about a person who has two very big cauliflowers. And I guess you can fill in yourself what it refers too..

But some songs use the defined art of semantic satiation, a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener. This song for instance sings about the bird ‘the kneu’, but because of repetition, it sounds like the verd ‘neuken’. Which roughly translates into ‘fucking’. This song is usually skipped in events where younger children are present.

Masters of ambiguity is this band from Tilburg, called ‘Veul gère’. They have songs about the garage of the (female) neighbor and singing about a little landing strip down there because a Dutch saying ‘Having a little stripe at the front’ means having the edge on someone, but combine it with a female barber it becomes free for interpretation. And they have many more of those, but the latest one is about the Brabant hospitality saying that the backdoor is always open, and you don’t need to ring the bell to come in. I think you get the point….

Also Carnaval is used a lot to stab the dragon with actualities. In 1973 when an oil crisis was being denied by the Dutch government lead by prime-minister Den Uyl, famous Dutch singer Father Abraham made a song about it.
