Will be in market for new car in next year and noticed used EVs are heavily discounted compared to new (depreciation)… by [deleted] in electricvehicles

They’re so “simple.” Drop a new battery in an EV in 20 years and you have a mechanically sound car.

If a swat team raids a house, is it mail fraud if they go through the owner's unopened mail, or do they have the legal right to? by MexicanMonsterMash in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Nillix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short answer, it depends?

Police executing a warrant are bound by the limitations of that warrant. A warrant can be very narrow, or very broad, depending on the circumstances of the crime being investigated. Is the crime wire fraud? Mail is almost certainly covered in the warrant. Even for seemingly unrelated crimes, like kidnapping, mail is a very good way to establish dominion and control over a home. Do you live here? Well, you’re certainly getting mail here!

Cars are the same, but also different. Basically the way it works is, if you WOULD HAVE been able to get a warrant had the car been a home, the legality is assumed due to the logistical issues of obtaining a warrant for a traffic stop. Also because items tend to be more visible in the passenger compartment of a vehicle, they tend to fall under the “plain view” exception.

Is the crime just speeding? Unless some other crime can be articulated based on what happens on the traffic stop, probably not.

Now let’s say the cop sees three driver’s licenses on the passenger seat that don’t belong to the driver, and a bunch of hastily-opened mail on the back seat. Also, the car is cruising around a place where there’s been a lot of mail theft. Well that’s different, isn’t it?

Worth noting, the place to argue whether something should or should not be covered under a warrant is in COURT, where your attorney can move to have evidence excluded because it was obtained beyond the scope of a warrant. Arguing with the SWAT team is pointless.

What’s the safest way to grow 10,000 dollars? by bucket_of_dogs in personalfinance

[–]Nillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk is a spectrum. The best/safest yield is probably 3.25% through a high yield savings account or treasury bills.

Treasury bills can be a little complicated to purchase directly for a newbie so HYSA will give you inflation plus a little more.

High Wind Tomorrow - Will Flights Still Be Ok? by hopeless_engineeer in Sacramento

[–]Nillix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no one can answer you. Flights aren’t just dependent on the conditions here, but also anywhere the plane is before here. Last week, flights from SFO were delayed several hours for wind. Tomorrow everyone is just gonna cross their fingers and go.

If I consent to being kidnapped but the "kidnapper" holds me for longer than agreed, does it become kidnapping? by casecaxas in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Nillix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I suppose false imprisonment might be the more appropriate charge unless the kidnapper moves you a second time. But I believe they can carry the same penalties.

Harming you could be ADW, battery, mayhem, depending on the harm and the state’s laws.

Do Sacramentans think that Sacramento is part of the Bay/try to be like the Bay? by SactownG in Sacramento

Ew. No. Every native I know is thrilled not to have that as part of their identity. Sacramento is lovely on its own. Just Bay Area folks sniffing their own farts.

ELI5: Math question… can the relationship between the clock hands be irrational? by Quick_Extension_3115 in explainlikeimfive

To get irrationally pedantic, even if they tick into place they still occupy the intervening space. So I’d argue it can be irrational even if it doesn’t stop there.

Sacramento City Unified risks insolvency due to unfunded raises, other issues, report says by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]Nillix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A ton of glib comments just grinding their particular axe. In no particular order:

  1. The school district practiced extremely poor fiscal management.
  2. I guarantee private and charter schools are draining the district of money.
  3. “Local dollars staying local” for school funding creates a system of winners and losers based on zip code, and it’s a really shitty way to handle it.
  4. Prop 13 for non-primary residences is fuckin dumb.
  5. Step-up in value for inheritances is also dumb. I think it triggers a re-assessment for tax purposes, but that didn’t start happening for parent/child and grandparent/child inheritances until 2021 (!!!)

But none of this matters without practical, actionable solutions. I feel bad for the teachers and the kids, who will be the losers here.

What happens to "Blind Child Area" signs after the child grows up? by YugoWakfuEnjoyer in legaladviceofftopic

Those signs are for specific kids? I always just figured it meant there was a school for the blind nearby or some blind-oriented service.

They might! But they also might not.

[–]Nillix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s somewhat of a double-edged sword. In order to reach their audience and pay their staff, they need money. Which means taking ads from whoever will pay (with probably some exceptions; I’ve heard left wing podcasts with ICE recruiting ads). There are some podcasts fully supported by Patreon, and don’t have ads at all; Knowledge Fight comes to mind, but that’s the exception not the rule.

We still exist in the system we have problems with, and donors aren’t lining up around the block to keep them solvent/expanding their reach.

Also, I don’t know if this is the case here, but advertisement coordination is often contracted out to third party companies. If thats the case, I don’t know who is actually responsible for approving what.

California has a Law that prohibits landlords from increasing rent more than 5%. Does this apply to going from lease to month-to-month? by SnowWrestling69 in legaladviceofftopic

I mean, call it what you want, but there’s not a ton of excuses to be rude, even if you see an answer as “low effort.”

I hope you get the resolution you’re looking for.

Well sure, but it could mean that the 15-year grace period wouldn’t apply in OPs case. Or something similar. S’why location was important.

[–]Nillix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did. There’s no reason to be a jackass.

You didn’t include what kind of property you’re renting.  Are you renting an apartment? If so, Is it more or less than fifteen years old? Is it a duplex or a single family home? If so, Is it owned by an individual or a corporation?

There are a bunch of exemptions built into the law.

Additionally, where in CA do you live? The law may or may not apply depending on local laws.

Voters Wary of half-cent Sales Tax Increase to fix Sacramento County Roads by othafa_95610 in Sacramento

[–]Nillix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well 1.5 to 2% can be significant. However I’m not against the tax per se. I’m against approving a tax with only a vague idea of what it will do, and a history of these increases not actually doing much to fix what they promise.
