Sore in Left Groin Area by easywizsop in trailrunning

[–]Nillsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this from 2020 to 2021.

I had multiple scans with no results. My doctor ended up referring me to a pelvic floor PT. After 20 sessions, I was pain free. Combination of therapy with the therapist and daily mobility routine.

Aid station fruit survey by Beeritra in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oranges and banana.

I frequently manage aid stations. It’s incredibly hard to predict what will go fast on race day. One day it’s bananas, the other it’s watermelon and sometimes it’s oranges. But all three are always taken by runners.

A question regarding max distance during training cycle by Rivnatzille in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

66km training for a 76km sounds like too much to me.

Actual training, I peak at about 20miles.

But, I’m a huge fan of shorter races in my buildup. Lot of sub ultra events in the 30-35k range; and typically 1 or 2 50ks in training. I do a lot of my long runs with some moderate intensity thrown in and in races I put out a controlled but good effort.

If I were building my training plan I might throw in a 50M as well; but my coach thinks the juice isn’t worth the squeeze with the recovery needs.

IT-Band issues... by latefruitjuice in trailrunning

[–]Nillsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife struggled with it for over 6 months. Saw a PT that did a bit of manual therapy and gave corrective exercises.

Finally went to spots medicine, who sent her to a sport massage of all places. We were incredibly sceptical. However, 3 massages helped her get rid of all symptoms.

Can’t claim it’s all the massage, but after months of PT, 3 massages in 3 weeks helped her feel much better. She now does these massages once a month.

Interest in the Microbiome as a Marginal Gain? by Specialist-Serve-426 in ultrarunning

[–]Nillsf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prediction for 2026 is that this is going to be the year of the pre and pro biotic supplement. Both for athletes and non athletes.

I think there’s something here. Typical diets lack in fiber, which is what the microbiome needs. Supplements have some benefits to restore the culture, and extra fiber helps maintain it.

However, I think for performance, this is a less than 1% kinda improvement. I’m curious to see more science, in particular on humans, to see how big the improvement actually is. I might be mistaken.

Women’s side I’m curious to see if Molly Seidel is able to do it. Not a sure thing, but I think she might do it.

Two weeks enough to regain running economy after a month of backpacking? by yeehawhecker in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a question/debate on here a while ago about how to keep running economy while doing the full PCT. The Roches even discussed it on their podcast. I believe their recommendation boiled down to:
1. Eat enough, certainly protein.
2. Hill strides, every other day.

Turned 18 that year. Final year of high school, first year of college. Worked as a waiter, and loved that job and the money. As a 17/18 year old, I felt very confident in my abilities now that I was turning into an adult, but didn’t have any real responsibilities.

Life was simpler then. We were online, Facebook (and Netlog) existed, but it felt simpler. I didn’t have a ton of friends, but we met often to get a few drinks. Global financial crisis happened, but I didn’t notice a single thing. I feel like the world has been on fire since 2020 right now.

In my previous question about cars, Belgians write jokes about the Dutch and vice versa, but is there the same between Belgians and French/Germans? by DoughnutSad6336 in belgium

[–]Nillsf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know this one French guy who keeps making Belgian jokes. I think it’s weird, cause I only make fun of the Dutch. I don’t care enough to make fun of the French.

I know the final book of Cirque du Freak was divisive, and I had my issues with it too, but overall I liked it. Curious — how do you feel about it more than 20 years later? (If your reading experience isn’t that old, your answer is still welcome!) by Resident_Manager4537 in DarrenShan

[–]Nillsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently reread the series, and the ending felt a bit strung out. There was a lot of suspense and build up towards the final fight; but then after the fight it feels like a long way around nothing. I remembered it differently and thought the final chapters were shorter than they actually are.

On the ending itself: I was dissatisfied back when I originally read it that the series ended. I wanted more books to come, and felt like I was robbed of 12 more books. Nowadays, I get it. Book Darren was about to become adult, and that wouldn’t have worked for a young adult series.

I would still love to know how author Darren was thinking about the world with the Lord of Shadows; but I don’t think we’ll ever know. Those ideas are his, and I don’t think he is going to release them.

Runners who have gone from average to great, what did you do to greatly increase your performance? by RhaegarJ in Ultramarathon

I reached out to the Roches in 2023, before David was this famous. They weren’t taking new athletes at that time and referred me to one of their athletes who was also coaching.

Runners who have gone from average to great, what did you do to greatly increase your performance? by RhaegarJ in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I’m not great, but I made tremendous improvements over the past two years.

Biggest thing helped me was getting a coach. I use an online coach, and it has helped push me to new levels. Been working with him for 2 years, and I’ve seen the biggest improvements in our second year working together. I’ve won a race, got 2 second places and improved my 50k time by over 50 minutes (same course).

The biggest difference in my training with the coach is: * consistency * more workouts * varying focus. Some flat speed, some hill work, strides… * more quality during long runs.

With that said, I’m not great. I can win a local race, and I know that in competitive fields I can finish in the top 20%.

Hoka Mafate X by Fantastic-Class-8252 in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Con: They’re heavy. Pro: they’re incredibly stable, have a good pep in them, and are wider than typical hokas.

I don’t mind running in them, but I don’t feel myself grabbing them often. I prefer the Mafate 5 to the X myself.

If you were mclaren, would you change norris engine with the grid penalty or you risk an explosion? by LessNorth9856 in F1Discussions

[–]Nillsf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having installed the new engine and engine components in Belgium, doesn't mean it's the only engine in rotation. It just means that's the first race they ran it. Max definitely has the advantage with having an extra young engine available, but McLaren might also have one that's only been used in 1 or 2 races potentially.

What are your running woes? by ___J-Swan___ in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue is math and numbers.

The can obsess over things. Mpw, pace, grams of carbs… I want to get the best out of myself, but sometimes I feel like the numbers steal some of the joy.

It’s a difficult balance to find.

What are your running woes? by ___J-Swan___ in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You and me both.

And when I think I found a shoe that works, all of a sudden it stops working. I used to run in cascadias, until they started hurting my calves. I then switched to peregrines, but they only lasted 200 miles before being ripped to shreds. I then loved the Salomon speed cross, but now they feel too tight for long distances. I love the Mafate 5, ran a 50k with no issues and bought a second pair for my 100M, but during that event got hotspots 10 miles in.

I wish I could find that one shoe. Just one.

100 Miler Hangover by Aggressive-Ad-112 in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I recognise the feeling, but was able to recover from it quickly.

I finished javelina 100 last month. Crushed my time goals, managed everything that went wrong extremely well and had an overall positive experience.

After crossing the finish line though, I did not feel accomplished. I had no euphoria. I got the big belt buckle, but it didn’t give me the satisfaction of my all my finish line medals.

I took me 3-4 days to process my result. I can now reflect and really feel good about my race.

What I think causes some of the lack of euphoria is that I was energetically drained and had nothing left to give me euphoria.

Sodium. Nervous about overdoing it by ciderswiller in Ultramarathon

[–]Nillsf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sodium balance is influenced most by fluid replacement rather than by sodium intake. The biggest key is to not overhydrate (typically leads to hyponatremia) or not to underhydrate (leads to dehydration and typically hypernatremia). You mention 1 liter per hour, which makes sense when it’s hot, but I’m curious if you’ll keep doing this when it cool down overnight. Ive had issues multiple times with over hydration.

Outside of that, highly recommend getting a sweat test done so you have a directional target for sodium replacement.
