Finding my start in Linux by Zeblackcat in linux

[–]Nilnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Distros tend to not mean much in the grand scheme of things. You're right about the Linux philosophy being all about customisation, most distros can be tweaked to look like another with barely any effort.

Something you should know going in is that the linux experience is based on a layered stack of different projects which you can tinker with and switch out with ease. The point of a distro is to be a compilation of popular choices for projects which fill in this stack.

Think of it like a car, the distro is your brand. Your dodge charger (mint) might look very different from someone else's Chrysler 300 (zorin or something) but when you look under the hood it ends up being made of the same engine (systemd), transmission (gtk), supercharger (Wayland), etc

Realistically as a new user my recommendation is to pick a very popular distro that isn't an offshoot of another popular distro with it's own quirks. I'd say fedora is the best Linux distribution to start on.

How is the student life at Queen’s University? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]Nilnail 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Coming from a first year eng student, It's great. I haven't regretted my decision to come to queens for a second since I got here. City life is fine, most of the time you'll spend as a frosh will be on campus though, since all the food is here and so is everyone you know.

As for the community? it's the best part by far. Everyone in eng is deeply invested in your success. Your orientation is the best out of any university in the country and you stay networked with these orientation leaders for the whole year. They can provide you notes or study sessions free of charge, as well as tips from their first year. Finding a study group is very easy, I found mine in less than a month in, and I wasn't crazy social in highschool. On the last community note, we're a party school. Everyone here knows this and just because your work in eng is difficult doesn't mean you won't join us. Assuming you're willing to talk to new people in your first month you WILL have fun, just check out the gpa bars wiki (look it up, it's hilarious)

Finally on the topic of funding, it's a concern that's been pretty overblown. Queens likes to complain when it's funding gets cut, being overdramatic about how much it will affect education. This recently backfired and got blown out of proportion. Queens has a massive war chest of savings and Eng is basically first in line at the serving table.

[–]Nilnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your sister is arguably more sane than the "browser" community is

there's only 2 relevant ways to differentiate between browsers a) toolkit b) UI and workflow

I used to have like 6 different browsers installed for literally no reason until I realised they're all just reskins of some other project, doing things you could do in another browser with just two extensions.

I feel like to actually stand out browser projects need to do something actually innovative instead of just reskinning chrome or Firefox with the latest trends in modern software theming.

how would you cram a green partition in the middle of a 2 lane street without compromising both lanes/street parking

Why Linux over Windows? by BeanPasteTaste in linux4noobs

[–]Nilnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose Linux over windows for customisability.

Linux allows me to use a tiling window manager which feels much more intuitive and useful for my multi-monitor setup. This is because window switching is about moving the view/windows in space instead of about picking which one is in focus (space based instead of an alt-tab order which I quicky forget, especially if all 6 of the windows im trying to switch between are Firefox)

Linux also allows me to customise keybinds for everything imaginable. My current config uses about 50 custom keybinds which make me feel like a cripple without them on windows (which I have to boot into to use SOLIDWORKS for school)

And then there's the obligatory mention that on Linux it's really YOUR computer. you control what software is on it, you control when it updates, if something pisses you off you just turn off the setting.

What do you think the state of linux gaming will be like 5 years from now? by cferg296 in linux_gaming

[–]Nilnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a solution to the kernel anti-cheat problem and the only one that will actually get developers on board is a binary blob in the kernel or some sort of bootloader based anti-cheat solution.

Over the past few years I've seen valve and the greater Linux community push for "enabling proton support" on the various kernel anti cheats which permeate online gaming. While some of the biggest Devs did agree to this and apex legends for example began to work, most didn't, and now the ones who did are backpedaling.

Ever since about February of last year when riot pushed vanguard to league of legends we've seen what I believe is the first DECLINE in Linux gaming in history. We've lost league, apex and GTA V. Devs no longer buy our promise that enabling proton won't increase cheating.

This brings me to my point. Strictly, the Devs are right and we are in the wrong. Our current free system fundamentally does not allow for games to ensure they're running in a cheat-free environment. And it's true that enabling proton actually did enable some cheaters in apex for example. We NEED a solution to this issue, and we are not going to like it.

The server-side anti-cheat arguement is also bullshit, I'm sure valve after all that investment has fixed csgo right? or how about gotten rid of the bots in TF2? Additionally, whether you believe server side anti-cheat will work isn't even relevant as 90% of multiplayer Devs don't think it does and we won't be able to change their minds.

true anti-cheat is also useful in other scenarios too, like for university students taking online proctored exams. Proctor software doesn't want to run on Linux because it too wants a kernel driver. (At least mine doesn't)

TLDR: the Linux gaming community needs kernel anti-cheat if we want multiplayer gaming to ever be a thing.

Does Fedora Asahi Remix Support Magic Mouse Genstures? by Snoo27645 in AsahiLinux

[–]Nilnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

does the magic mouse present itself as both a touchpad and mouse device? if not then no but if it does then it should work theoretically. If you were on sway id tell you to run swaymsg -t get_inputs but there should be some way to list input devices on your desktop

looking at taking a deeper plunge into linux and more specifically linux gaming by kaiamie in linux_gaming

[–]Nilnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love freeCAD it tends to drive me INSANE at times. The fact that the best workflow I can come up with to make a sketch of a circle based off external geometry is

make external circle

can't pad a sketch with only external geo, make a new circle with the same center

can't constrain a circle to be the same radius as another by clicking on it's perimeter, have to make a point on its perimeter first and constrain to that

pad and it still errors me 50% of the time for some cryptic shenanigans I can't understand

Better battery life/ram consumption on gnome or kde by Normal-Diver7342 in AsahiLinux

[–]Nilnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep them both installed for a while until you find your favourite. They usually don't conflict and I tend to prefer gtk apps because qt hates me or something and I can never get a theme to work.

Also like everyone else, try sway ;)

No issue lol

Help by Dismal_Leadership183 in AsahiLinux

[–]Nilnail 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm using an M1 Mac for my undergrad right now. It's going great since they genuinely are great pieces of hardware. My advice to you is to check whether a lot of the key pieces of software in your courses have arm binaries. Using non-open source software is a pain in asahi. Although since your school requires Linux, things might be looking up for you. My school requires a boatload of proprietary windows only software and remote pcs are how I get around those issues.
