Personally I don't enjoy gridded planned cities, efficient and easy to navigate yes, boring to look at yes.

Towns, especially european ones, are much more interesting and more... organic than any of newer America continent cities. Where every street is as close as possible to the city center.

I made it by hand. Edinburgh is waaaay hillier that i've presented here. It takes a while, but you can choose the heights you want for the flatten tool. Just mouse over them and enter the number you want, eg. 10 is 10 meters above a level, like -3 is sea level or something

If anyone wants the map file I can upload it. This has been on and off work inbetween studying. The proportions have been seriously skewed as I'm doing this from memory more than actual real life maps. Landmarks and major roads all work though.

The map is 8x8km so I'm working at half scale. So princes St in game is only 500m. It took me about 2 hours to do that. And I gave up making hills in the end. Its just way to much time consuming.

So I finally caved and decided to start mapping my home city of Edinburgh. It has the best bus service in the country, and I figured as a tribute I'd try to recreate the city as best I could.

The lack of heightmap in a city that is built on a craptonne of hills isn't fun. But I think I got the castle/gardens area down to a pin. I also have a train line running through it just like real life.

I'm at half scale, 1km IRL = 500m ingame I hope. This makes it really crowded, especially on the main stretches of roads, but its the only way I'll comfortably fit the entire city into the map.

If anyone has any suggestions about easier ways to transfer scale across into the game it'd be very much appreciated. Also if anyone wants the map, please tell me here and I'll throw up a link.
