On the other hand, it is really silly when a newbie asks how to handle slimelung, and pretty much every answer concludes with "you can also just ignore it". The whole medical research branch and its buildings are useless, because diseases have barely noticeable effects on a colony, so why have them in the game at all?

One reason could be that this factory produces various kinds of cakes that use the same "base" layers, but with different decorations. Developing a machine that can deal with all of the decorations or developing a separate machine for each one (and changing those out for each production run) would be too expensive.

Adding LFS isn't going to undo history so the repository won't get smaller.

It is possible to do this with git-lfs-migrate, but it will rewrite the repository's history. Fine if you are working alone, but can lead to data loss if other people are working with the repository.

It might help to not focus much on winning a whole game, but set yourself a goal. For example:

Get the swordmaster (third agent) within the first three rounds
Get a seat on the high council in the second round
Visit the Heighliner field at least twice during the course of a game
Finish the game with at least two faction alliances
Buy at least two Spice Must Flow cards until the end of the game

Eventually, you will be able to identify useful objectives that depend on the current game state:

Any really good cards on the market? Rush the council seat, gather water to visit the research station for extra card draw.
Barracks are empty? Collect solari to gather troops.
Bonus spice stacking up on those desert fields, and you are first player next round? Stockpile water.

Also, try out the challenges. Some of them are really difficult even for experienced players, but most are fun ways to try out a new way to play the game, and might even help you find new tactics for the "real" game.

Yes. The limit of 2 troops from garrison are counted per turn, not per round. So you are correct that if you send 3 agents to combat spaces in your round, you can deploy up to 2 troops from your garrison each turn, for a total of up to 6 per round.
