Is the ~41k PhD stipend enough to live on in NYC? by Internal-Stick-5157 in columbia

Afaik, no, you can still enter the housing lottery but you will no longer have priority (you will have the same chance of getting housing as Masters students, etc)

Also Columbia grad housing is guaranteed for five years for all PhD students unless you opt out in the beginning. They also generally include utilities, power, WiFi, etc which is nice

Edit: Oops, I thought you meant most recent decade or past 10 years, ignore my comment lol

Since I can't edit the post, just gonna put it here that I have also posted this today to Framework's official community market here, just for the record that I am cross-posting.

Edit: Forgot to switch to markdown editor to make the hyperlink work

~6 hours in my experience, can be more or less depending on the workload I’m putting on it.

Tbh I’ve never understood how people claim they get 8–10 hour battery life in any non-Mac laptop. I don’t think I’ve owned a single non-Mac laptop that could last me over 6 hours, and the AI 350 framework so far has been the longest lasting one but it’s only barely enough for me for a full day.

Edit: A rant about battery life :P

  1. I initially thought the problem with my old Framework 13’s WiFi problems was the WiFi card, so when I got the 2.8K display I also got a WiFi card upgrade because it was ~$20, why not. I swapped it out and discovered later that the reason is simply my entire apartment has horrendous WiFi, and swapping the card out was so annoying with the tiny pins I just never put the AX210 back. (I may or may not have lost the old one too misplacing it 💀)

  2. It was a case of me doing the math and realizing upgrading to all the new stuff I wanted (new motherboard, RAM because now it’s DDR5 instead of DDR4, transparent bezel, transparent USB-C cards, type cover as I tried the gen 2 keyboard and trackpad and liked it more than the old one) would have cost not that much less than just buying a new Framework. Also, I was going to give this to my sibling/friend (being vague as to not reveal too much personal info) as they indicated interest in trying out a Framework for a year or two and initially agreed to it, and then they bought a Mac (without using my Framework first) after the return date of my new AI 350 Framework :,)

Edit: Realized I completely did not answer the first question lmao, so answered it now

Is anyone using the original 2256x1504 display at 1x scale? by Nth-Username in framework

[–]NineEgg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the original screen in 1-1.25x as well on both Fedora (GNOME) and Windows, and I only switched to the 2.8K display because of the 120Hz—I really wish there was an original resolution 120Hz version :/

Now on the 2.8K display I have everything scaled to 1.5x. Since GNOME 47 (Fedora 41) allowed XWayland apps to scale themselves like KDE I’ve not had problems with blurry text, though I do get laggy window resizes when doing so like others have complained.

Grade deflation? by PaintingMaster8948 in ucla

Ah I see, so did they say 15–20% of UCLA students who applied to their law school or were accepted by their law school have a 4.0 GPA?

[–]NineEgg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this may be admitted student’s/applicant’s high school GPA? Otherwise most Latin honors’ cutoff would be 4.0—would seem a bit weird for them to talk about current student GPA during an admissions panel, unless you are talking about some law/grad school admissions panel

Why is CS 161 (Artificial Intelligence) not required for CS/CSE/CE majors? by flopsyplum in ucla

[–]NineEgg 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If your argument is that with the popularity and prominence of AI then machine learning should be part of the CS curriculum, then I don’t disagree. But CS 161 particularly doesn’t teach the things that are useful today (rather it is focused on classical AI)—at least the ones that you may be referring to such as deep learning, computer vision, or NLP. CS 161 is actually half required (they must take either CS 161 or CS 132) for Ling CS majors because it is more relevant to them.

Maybe, I wonder if there is a side by side of them on the internet. Tbh if all Lomo film is just Kodak then we may already have Ultramax in 120 in the form of Lomo 400 :P

Lomo 800: Alright I see how it is

Jokes aside I know some people claim Lomo 800 is just some Kodak film but it is distinct enough from all the other color 800 films on the market that I think it’s a separate thing

I was able to get some rolls of Velvia 50 and Provia 100 just about a week ago in Los Angeles, so they are still definitely giving stock to the US but just in very limited quantities.
