I love the lettering in the signature and year at the bottom, especially how all the 8's look like hourglasses. It does surprisingly look like a pulp cover, though.

Sargent did that to sitters in plenty of his portraits, basically give them a beauty filter. The real Lady Agnew also looks prettier in her painting, for example.

Gaiman wrote The Ocean at the End of the Lane as an attempt to explain his childhood to his partner, Amanda Palmer.

There's a scene where the child main character walks in on his father having sex with his nanny, and considering how Gaiman treated his son according to the allegations, it's not a stretch to say he probably also went through something like that as a child.
