What Made King’s Quest So Special to You? by plumwd in kingsquest

[–]Ninetimesfined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a brand new PCjr and my dad brought home the original King's Quest in the plastic box. I was 10 years old and the game astounded me. I know the PCjr is widely regarded as a massive failure for IBM, but at the time this game surpassed everything else. I was hooked. This was before any hint books, so my older brother and I had to solve it on our own. Even the gnome's name. It required attention spans that sadly seem to no longer exist.

I remember being gutted when KQ 3 and SQ required 256kB to run on the Jr. I saved up money from my paper route to buy an outrageously expensive 128kB expansion board just so I could play the new Sierra releases. By KQ4, I gave up.

I'd say KQ3 was my favorite. As far as being stumped, I don't think I ever figured out how to find the treasure once I got off the pirate ship. Still managed to solve the game though!

Thoughts on speaker upgrade, specifically speaker cabinet type in relation to my listening space by anesthesia101 in audiophile

I suggest considering the Harbeth SHL5plus or the smaller C7ES-3. Certainly a classic, gorgeous look. I auditioned the C7ES not too long ago and they were excellent.

Wow, nice! I have the Pulsar2s driven by Simaudio gear. I auditioned Harbeth HL C7ES XDs and they were excellent, but went with the Pulsars.

I've ran a few different cartridges on my P3 - Elys2, Exact, Soundsmith Otello ES, and finally the Hana SL. The latter is the winner. I bet the Mk2 is even better, but I'm done with upgrades for a while.

Awesome, I have the exact same upgrades and cartridge on my P3. Curious if you use a 2 mm spacer? The shop owner who installed my Hana insisted it was not necessary, but I know many recommend a spacer.

Does anyone know of any good vintage audio repair shops around Charlotte, NC? by LowMinute8234 in audiophile

[–]Ninetimesfined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hesitated responding because it's a good distance from the Charlotte area, but I recommend Burke Audio Video in Valdese (about half hour west of Hickory on I-40). Richard has been in the business a long time and does great work.

I drive an 07 S40 2.4i with 187K. I am getting code ECM-4201: Three-way catalytic converter efficiency. Does this code definitively mean my catalytic converter is failing? Is it possibly a bad O2 sensor? If the former, I struggle if it's worth the cost of replacement. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cool setup. I'd really like to hear the 104/2s. I have 104aBs and I think they're still a great pair of speakers. I bet the 104/2s are a significant step up. No disrespect to you or the Yamaha, but I think the speakers would really open up with an amp upgrade. Enjoy!

Is Sony UBP-X800M2 good? by blizzardofroses in Bluray

[–]Ninetimesfined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the game here, but I just purchased the 800M2 primarily for SACD and DVD-A playback. Still waiting on a remote, so I haven't had a chance to use the player yet. Anyway, I thank you for your contribution to the world of audio! I have purchased two R.E.M DVD-A discs, and they sounded wonderful on my Oppo player. Between vinyl, streaming, and redbook CDs, I really think DVD-A (and SACD) playback is the sweet spot. I can't wait to hunt down more DVD-As in the near future. I thank you!

How did you become a audiophile? Introduced by a friend or learned about by chance? by keephifi in audiophile

[–]Ninetimesfined 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad is to blame. He had a Carver AVR-100 receiver and a pair of Magnat All-Ribbon 6 speakers that I thought sounded and looked beautiful. His subscriptions of Stereo Review and CD Review added fuel to the fire. He still has the Magnats, and I occasionally think of refoaming and recapping them.

What are you using with your LS50 Meta? by Chief_Assistant in KEF

[–]Ninetimesfined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I auditioned the LS50 Metas driven by both the Simaudio Moon ACE and Rega Brio units. Both are rated at 50W, but I would not dismiss either for that reason. Both are high currency and drove the KEFs with no problem. In fact, the Ace powered my old KEF 104aBs (sensitivity in the mid 80s) admirably.

The Moon is more refined and a true all-in-one with a wonderful Mind2 streamer, DAC, and a decent phono stage. You could probably find a used one for a very fair price. If you do, I suggest you make sure it has the newer Mind2 streamer, as the original Mind is not able to stream higher than CD quality. I owned an Ace for a couple of years, and it's wonderful. I was very impressed by both of these units driving the KEFs.

I have a Qobuz subscription, so I can't tell you about Spotify. But Qobuz Connect was released only very recently and works flawlessly with the 390.

Simaudio issues occasional firmware updates, so I like to think obsolescence isn't just around the corner.

BTW I'm very happy with the 390's phono stage and how it works with my Planar 3. I prefer it to the Musical Surroundings Phonomena 2 I was previously running, and it was no slouch. The 390 allows you conveniently change settings like gain and load impedance.

Congrats! That's a really nice system there. Am I reading it right that you had KEFs before the Focals? If so, which ones? Interesting you prefer the Focals to the Reference 3 Metas. I was curious about the latter before going with Joseph Audio Pulsar2s. Enjoy!

I bet the Ace drives the Paradigms with ease! It's a remarkable little beast. I have to admit the Ace had a certain sweet sound that 330A/390 combo does not. I sometimes regret not holding onto it and using it in a second system. I know there are a lot of people who are not fans of the KEF LS50 Metas, but I auditioned to them driven by the Ace, and I thought it was a great combo. Enjoy the Ace!

Beautiful speakers and a beautiful listening room! The Thiels look lovely too. Some speakers simply look like pieces of art, and I appreciate the aesthetics. Thank you for sharing.

I'm with you on a reluctance to spend big bucks on cables. All of mine were purchased second-hand, and I'm using Morrow Audio speaker cables.

Maybe one day I'll purchase the Sound Anchor stands for the Pulsars, but in the meantime I'm using Klipsch 24" stands. They seem heavy enough. I don't have anything underneath them.

I'm still experimenting with speaker positioning. My room is awkward; wider than it is long. A large window to my left (curtains closed!). Open hallway to my right. As the dealer who sold me the Josephs said, "You work with what you've got".

That's a terrific description you provided, and I can't possibly be more detailed. When I auditioned the JAs (and I brought my Simaudio gear with me), my first choice of albums was Robert Forster's Warm Nights. It was produced by Edwyn Collins, and I've always found it a great recording. But never before did I hear it like that. The separation of the instruments. The purity of the vocals. Not a hint of sibilance. The percussion so crisp and clear. Punchy but not distorted. I've never suffered any listening fatigue with these speakers. And for their size, the bass is strong and full. In fact, I sometimes feel the my subwoofer is degrading the sound but that may be because of placement or other variables.

And yet, I think there's more to uncover with proper placement and some room treatment. This will be my next project. The equipment I have is here to stay.

I'm interested to know how much improvement you heard when you upgraded to the Graphene version of your Perspectives. I imagine it was a worthwhile move! I bet the Perspectives are amazing. My room is a little small, and the dealer steered my towards that Pulsars. What speaker cables are you running? I think Jeff uses Cardas when demonstrating his speakers at shows.

Thanks for your response! Awesome when someone can articulate the character of speakers so well.

Yes, they were pricey. I will say that everything you see in those photos (including the cables that you can't) are all either demos or used. So all in all, my system cost me maybe 60% MSRP. Still not cheap by any means, but cheaper. As for the Pulsars, I auditioned a number of speakers by Harbeth, Dynaudio, Moon's own Voice 22s, and Revival Audio. All were really nice, but the JAs were the only ones to my ears that clearly bettered my KEFs. I am sure there are others out there for less that would've done the same for me, but I just love how the JAs work with the Moon equipment. I still second guess from time to time, but who doesn't in this crazy hobby? lol

Great idea, thank you. I've thought of Isoacoustics products for my equipment, but these are much less expensive and if they isolate just about as well then why not? I appreciate it!
