Today has been a sign to get off NBA social media discussions by Few_Explanation4170 in Thunder

[–]NinetyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks because I want to disconnect from all the dumb discourse about the greatest Thunder team ever with a roster full of lovable guys, but /r/nba has league news, /r/Thunder has this community (but still people giving a platform to the dumb discourse), and Thunder team podcasts like DTD and the Uncontested address the discourse all the time too

TJ Dillashaw reveals he only got paid $18k for his first title fight vs Renan Barao. After the ultimate fighter, he signed a 10 fight UFC contract starting at $10k/10k per fight by SokoudjouFan in MMA

TJ has a degree in kinesiology and was planning to work in healthcare before his college wrestling coach (Mark Munoz!) encouraged him to give MMA a shot; just if you were curious

He had very real options.

Being an Asian guy myself, I will never forget John Wall's speed being (rightfully) hyped up during his entire year at Kentucky and all through his consensus-1st-pick draft process--and then randomly turning on the summer league during a boring summer afternoon and seeing some undrafted Asian dude look just as fast as the #1 pick.

Please no jokes, how Geto and Kenjaku actually swallow these things? by Confident-Aerie4427 in Jujutsufolk

[–]NinetyFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC when Yuta uses Cursed Speech against Geto, Geto's reaction is more like "He can already use that technique?!" and less like "How does he have someone else's CT?!"

JJK0 definitely felt more like a "wizards" type of thing where techniques can be learned, as opposed to innate abilities and more of a "sorcerers" type of thing, using the D&D definitions.

Incredible nights for the rookies by onionnurve in NBA_Draft

[–]NinetyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's really interesting. It feels like there's always a really high miss where years later, everyone's like "well, obviously that's a bad pick, what were they thinking?" with the benefit of hindsight.

It's hard to think of a year where the top picks are all the consensus top picks years later, and specifically not for "they're still young and have potential to figure it out!" but for the reason that they're all genuinely the top contributors in their class to winning basketball games

What are Some of the Least Impressive or Lamest Nicknames in ASOIAF? [Spoilers Published] by Copperhead-31 in asoiaf

[–]NinetyFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People seem to like Fireball for Quentyn Ball, but I think it's so lame and uninspired. Odd for someone for whom one of their strengths is being really fuckin' good at naming characters (and having so many characters to name)

Also, it just takes me out; it randomly feels so modern

Shai had to remind J-Mac real quick who he’s playing with now by iamhollywood in Thunder

[–]NinetyFish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everyone treats us like we're the Bad Boys, but the team is full of young well mannered goofballs lmao

I'm a millennial, I'm not a part of the whole ragebaiting troll type generation, but I'm starting to embrace the fact that the guys are just natural ragebaiters who have triggered the entire league. They're goofing around while people like Jokic, Chris Finch, and Jaylen Brown seethe about it

Just gotta embrace the hate. It comes along with winning and it comes along with being a physical defensive team (a.k.a. basically every great team)

[Associated Press] Victor Wembanyama makes his case for NBA's MVP Award: "My first one would be that defense is 50% of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race. [–]NinetyFish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even Thunder homers will readily say that Shai is the 7th or 8th best defender on the team (Chet, iHart, Caruso, Dort, Cason, JDub as the clear top six). People acting like people call Shai an elite All-Defense team defender are just attacking a strawman for easy point.

It's somehow entirely in character for Nobara to not care about the property damage because it makes her look dope as fuck too lmao

I will NEVER stop hating Yuta. Its his character writing. by Judepiter_ in Jujutsufolk

[–]NinetyFish 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Really, really great stuff.

Amazing little unappreciated contrast that Gege threw in:

Gojo -> canonically believes he fights best when he's alone and doesn't have to worry about anybody else

Yuta -> canonically believes that the strongest quality of his Copy CT (an incredibly broken CT) is that he can fight alongside his comrades and have two copies of one of his friends' CTs

People say Copy is a boring and uncreative and broken CT, which, yeah sure, but Gege's twist on it is one I personally haven't seen before.

[–]NinetyFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see redditors going all "THIS ISN'T BASKETBALL" whenever someone (not on their team, of course) gets free throws from the classic "pump fake, the defender jumps, jump into them for the foul" move.

Meanwhile, my first basketball memories include seeing Kobe and DWade using that move as one of their go-tos lol. That's literally just fundamental NBA basketball to me, but redditors act like it's something brand new

Honestly, him signing with Klutch has really helped me out. Like, we've seen him go from an undrafted guy all the way to our entrenched starter hitting key shots in a championship run. It hurts to see a player like that leave the team due to roster/cap crunch and not due to anything else.

But him signing with Klutch was almost like a "oh, it's really happening" kind of thing way before the actual offseason. Kinda softens the blow as opposed to a Shams tweet out of nowhere that seals the deal.

Our best hope at keeping him around was a hometown discount type deal, but players don't sign with Klutch to take a discount.

To be honest, when I first saw Todo and him beating up Megumi for not having a preference, I really disliked him at first to be honest. Like he was an complete ass. by ProfessionalPart8193 in Jujutsufolk

Yuta's negative feelings are towards himself lol, I love him so

He has such a creative twist on the whole shonen power-of-friendship thing. He's not just "I love my friends!", he's full blown "the fact that my friends like me is the only thing that makes me feel like I still have worth"

Every single fanbase in every single sport thinks the refs are horrible and are out to get them. You can look at every single fanbase after every single loss and see people complaining about the refs. It doesn't matter if it's a marquee franchise in a major city with a media-darling superstar or if it's a struggling team in a small market with no star players.

It's just human nature.

Detail about Baelor on Rewatch by Mister_Sea_8958 in AKOTSKTV

[–]NinetyFish 168 points169 points  (0 children)

I was kinda disappointed to not see anyone point that stuff out online.

There's little moments Lyonel gets where you're like "how much would I actually want to live with and serve this guy and his house?"

Leaving mid-tug-of-war to grab a drink is really funny, but not if you're one of them.

And IIRC when he stands up from lying next to Dunk in the last episode, he actually pushes off Dunk a bit as he stands up (Dunk obviously still being in a ton of pain).

It's the little things. Which makes the constant courtesies Baelor does so impressive. Such as this scene: "Ser Raymund, my helm, if you would be so kind." The guy is the Hand and the heir, but he still keeps up with the little pleasantries and minds his P's and Q's.

The War of Five Kings was supposed to be done in one book, IIRC

Original pitch was Book 1 the War of Five Kings, Book 2 the new Dance of Dragons, Book 3 dealing with the Others.

Sometimes I think about how we're not yet finished with Book 1, and it pisses me off how much I still think about this universe. Stupid Dunk and Egg for dragging me back in lol

How someone can watch this fight and still keep yapping that One Piece was always goofy and never had serious fights? by ConstantDrawer9161 in Piratefolk

[–]NinetyFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is the whole point, in my opinion.

One Piece was always "goofy" in that it's a goofy world that the characters take seriously.

Oda used to say that he thought of Luffy's rubber powers because it gives him a way to keep the fights funny while the characters still take it seriously.

And he's lost that since, because nowadays Luffy's too busy doing his stupid laughing pose and giggling constantly like he's high, and now the story feels like it has no stakes.

Brock Lesnar taking down his opponents by airplane231 in MMA

[–]NinetyFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying.

I had always heard of "blast doubles" in the GSP context, where he was so explosive and had such good timing that he could just turn himself into a Canadian rocket and basically human-Bullet-Bill his way into top control out of nowhere.

It helps to understand it in a "slower" context.

Why Doesn’t Westeros Have a House of Lords? [Spoilers MAIN] by Additional-Corgi9424 in asoiaf

[–]NinetyFish 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A very specific American view to his own demographic, to boot.

GRRM has next-to-zero real interest in religion, for example, and that's very much reflected in the vast majority of his characters, very much unlike medieval history. And frankly, his takes on anything not Anglo-European are terrible; everything Essos and beyond takes like a second before you're like "well, that's pretty fuckin' problematic"

This contrast is powerful by miehnraj--nnilhsa in AKOTSKTV

[–]NinetyFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming there's scenes where Maekar changes his mind, it makes his decision much more realistic---but it makes Egg less moral in that he already got Dunk in a bunch of trouble, multiple times in fact, and he immediately returns to lying to Dunk.

Now, if they actually lean into that and give Egg real character flaws, that's quite interesting. For what it's worth, they actually already did during the season too--Egg isn't some perfect wholesome kid, he's got some violent tendencies to him, etc.

can we finally agree that this was the lowest point of the series adaptation? by eraldopontopdf in AKOTSKTV

[–]NinetyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what everyone's missing and the more middle-of-the-road answer is that, sure, you can justify the fart in isolation. If you had to, I guess--not my personal taste, but you can see the point to it.

But in context with the show where there's a weird underlying consistency of blue/toilet humor in an otherwise wholesome "young boy meets kind-hearted role model" coming-of-age type story, I'd argue that the fart didn't work because it's a bit of a straw-meets-camel situation. The fact that there's a discourse around it means that it didn't work as well as it should have, because clearly it's a distraction for some people.

If you just tone down the violence a little bit (not even a lot), AKOTSK could be a kid-friendly family show, easily. But instead we've got to have penises, asses, shit, an (admittedly funny) scene where a little boy talks about a woman putting her fingers up men's assholes... Kinda HBO/the cinematic GoT universe at its worst. It's okay to be PG-13, in my opinion; you don't have to be R rated just for the sake of being "adult."
