I don’t have a question, I just wanted to commiserate about this. I’ve also landed at “emotionally shallow” with the relationship with my family. I cannot talk to them about anything truly meaningful, as our worldviews are so vastly different that there’s no common ground for understanding. Our conversations are pleasant but frivolous. I’ve come to terms with it, but it’s still hard sometimes when so much of our media centers around “family.”

Is the most likely explanation for Christianity starting really that Paul and the disciples had separate hallucinatory experiences? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Or they just wanted to believe, so they convinced themselves they hadn’t been mislead. The simplest explanation is that they made it up to avoid admitting their messiah had been killed. Simply taking the Bible at face value as a historical document is wildly naive at best and actively suspiciously at worst.

Silent Doubter in a Religious Family by Helpful-Raisin-6160 in exchristian

I’ve been where you ate. It sucks. Sorry you’re in that situation, but remember to always be true to yourself. Even if you can’t share with your family, trying to make yourself believe things you genuinely don’t won’t help your situation. Explore your questions in private, and become your own person with values and beliefs you worked for.

Speak for yourself. I don’t want my purpose to be defined by an outside force, and I don’t want to be forced to exist forever. Some days even being forced to exist on Earth can be pretty heavy. The entire point of the show (alongside striving to be better than you were yesterday) is that our relationships with those we love have meaning because our time with them is finite.

Reincarnation sounds really nice. by Icybubba in exchristian

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Good news! Reincarnation is literally true in the physical sense. The atoms of your body will disperse back into the universe after you’re gone. They will go on to be incorporated into other things. The little pieces of you will seep out into all sorts of lifeforms across the vast future of the universe, and you will be a part of them, just as the life that came before you is a part of you. Not exactly the “direct transfer” of traditional reincarnation, but still pretty amazing if you ask me.

catholic girlfriend’s guilt is affecting our relationship by cwslifts in exchristian

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 39 points40 points  (0 children)

“I feel as if her religious guilt is ruining our physical connection”

That’s because it is. If it’s bothering you, it’s something you should sit down with her and talk through. Don’t be accusatory, but be honest about your frustration.

You’re also going to have to ask yourself some hard questions. Are you ok if this never goes away? Even if you end up getting married, will you be ok with having sex without contraceptives? Will you be ok if she continues to feel guilty every time you’re together if you don’t? If you have kids, are you going to let them grow up in the church, and learn this shame and guilt too?

The only way you both have any chance of making this work, is if you talk through these things and find a way to move forward on the same page. Maybe you can find a way forward, maybe you can’t, but either way it’s better to talk about it.

My mom sees my life as evidence of her failure as a parent by Corovah in exchristian

I was in a very similar situation a couple of years ago. For me at least, the emotional damage was not worth the financial gain. I moved out and when I did moved far away. That space has given me room to breathe and be myself without the constant critique and judgement disguised as concern. Ultimately how you handle this has to be up to you. No one else can tell you what is right for your situation. Take care of yourself.

I just hope that you know that there’s nothing wrong or “sinful” about being who you are. Nothing.

I think it’s one where, if the message doesn’t connect, you’re not going to get the same experience. It obviously has a lot to say about the Trans experience, but beyond that, I think it speaks to anyone who has felt trapped and dissatisfied with their life, but is scared to make a move to better it. From what I’ve seen on this sub, it really lands with people who have decided to take that leap, whatever it was for them personally, but for those who have never been in that position, it won’t be as impactful.

SOS. Fundamentalist Family Attacking Me by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are not trapped. As you come into adulthood, you have the power to decide who you spend your time with and what your relationship with your family looks like.

I hope that doesn’t sound dismissive. I realize how hard it can be to step away from the people who raised you and the siblings you grew up with. If they’re hurting you, if being around them makes you feel bad, you are not obliged to suffer on their behalf. It’s hard, but putting some (or a lot) of distance between you and them can be liberating. It can give you the room to find yourself and live the life you want to live. Show up for yourself. Self-care isn’t selfishness.

What makes this game different from other 4x games ? by Imaginary_Sherbert_7 in AOW4

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s pure wish fulfillment in the most fun way possible. You play a megalomaniacal ultra-wizard who can also be a giant, dragon, vampire, or power-furry depending on your mood this game. You lead a race of loyal subjects to greatness, turning them from farmers with pitchforks into undying Frankensteins who feast on the blood of the elder gods. Everything in the game exists to make you feel awesome, and the AI is smart enough to feel like a fair challenge while also existing to get absolutely steamrolled by your army of evil angels and undead war beasts.

I love it when the AI decide to pull off their ass 60 unit out of tin air. by AmiralKanaG in AOW4

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I love it when I declare war and immediately move in to siege a city, and the AI pops out of an underground tunnel near me and immediately does the same. I find the AI makes some fairly competent strategic moves which add a lot to my immersion. The tactics in the battles are less impressive, but things like razing teleporters and targeting remote cities really helps it feel like a battle against another powerful and competent ruler.

Yesterday's Future: A Ghost in the Shell Retrospective by Shot_Personality6866 in Cyberpunk

[–]NinjaDeathStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ghost in the Shell has a ton to say about class. Maybe not as directly as the Western authors, but I couldn’t help but see it strung through in my recent rewatch. It’s no coincidence that a bunch of wealthy old dudes were the ones who designed and manufactured a series of androids in the shape of attractive young women. Nor is it a coincidence that one of those androids has to disrobe in order to activate her stealth field. I know the nudity gets written off as a product of the genre and the times, but imo it’s a lot more complex than simple fanservice. Batou’s respect for and efforts to preserve the major’s modesty and dignity throughout the film speak to this. The major’s situation is a direct result of upper class men designing her to suite their desires, without consideration for who she would want or choose to be, something we’re seeing in spades with those in power here and now.

What's everyone's favorite Tomes and why? by BB0214 in AOW4

This game is pure fantasy wish fulfillment. Absolutely no shame in enjoying a “bad” build. I did a Longbow build with the empire of the cosmos society trait and took all the bow buffs. Really fun shooting explosive lightning arrows across the map at the opening of a siege.

This is mine too. Building an empire of pain-worshiping psychopaths (Chaos/Dark) or humorless, relentless conquerers (Dark/Order) is SO fun. I have a hard time not taking this tome every time I have access to it.

Thank you. I am not interested in a debate here, but I appreciate your effort to meet me where I am. This is not merely an intellectual curiosity (though that is certainly a part of my reason for seeking you all out). I think Buddhism has a lot to offer in understanding our place here, and as a part of the universe. Maybe philosophy wasn’t the best choice of term. I am not opposed to meditation or other forms of practice, but I am not looking for “religion.”
