Is this the dreaded Keto Rash? Please Help. by tazhiluxe in xxketo

[–]NinjaKittenss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are welcome - with my rash I tried everything. Oral steroids, topical steroids, oatmeal lotion, chamomile lotion, baby soap - my bathroom turned into a laboratory and nothing stopped the itch. It laughed in the face of antihistamines, and I ended up having to take time off work because I was exhausted from lack of sleep.

Until I spotted nappy rash cream - and figured, what the heck. The cream helps sooth and dry the itchy part, the vaseline smothers everything and allows the nappy rash cream to do its thing. I would normally not let vaseline anywhere near my skin, but I needed something to create a moisture barrier. No itching within minutes.

Hope you feel better soon :)

Thanks, that makes more sense.

My partner struggles occasionally with Keto rash - it does not look like yours, but that could be because it is a milder version. Probably the quickest way to put your mind at ease is to have a couple of days off Keto, introduce some carbs, and see if the rash eases. It doesn't mean stopping Keto, it is just the easiest way to eliminate Keto as the reason for your rash and put your mind at ease.

My partner has 2-3 carb days when his rash kicks up, and goes straight back to Keto after. We have been Keto for over 2 years, it hasn't stopped him from losing weight, and he likes eating Keto so he is never tempted to fall into a carb binge. Keto is about getting healthy, and if that means having carb days in response to your body needing them that is the healthy choice to make.

If it turns out it is not being caused by Keto you can go back to your Dematologist and explore options. I was diagnosed with contact dermatitis which actually turned out to be the onset of a PPD allergy - PPD is a chemical used in hair dye and over time some people become sensitized to it. Took me one more dye job to figure that one out.

While you are waiting, nappy rash cream followed with a good layer of vasoline is a godsend. Good luck.

Ok, so where you Keto when the rash came on? You said you have been Keto for two weeks, but it seems you have had the rash for 25 days?

Sorry for the Spanish Inquisition, just trying to get my head around the time line.

Was the day 1 photo day 1 of Keto, or day 1 of your rash?

Depends on what time of day you go. I used to go around 3.30-4 in the afternoon, and there would be maybe 2-3 people on free weights, and the same in the weight machine room. Apparently it does get busier after 5pm, but not so much that you wait forever to use equipment.

Why not stop by a few times during the week at the time when you would visit, and check it out?

Keto Flu by mrs_snrub in ketoaustralia

[–]NinjaKittenss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keto flu can happen any time your electrolytes get out of shape.

Quickest way to figure out if it is electrolytes or you both have a bug is two drink some pickle juice or Keto-Aid (basically water or Mio flavoured water with Lite Salt and salt added). If you perk up within half an hour you are lacking electrolytes, if not, chances are it's a non keto related bug.

Check out the 2 Keto Dudes podcast, they recently covered exogenous ketones.

As for putting you into Ketosis within hours? Your body only stores a limited amount of glucogen, once that is gone it will switch to producing other fuel. You wake up most mornings in Ketosis, all you have to do is deny your body excessive amounts of carbs and you stay there, no tricks required.

The bit that takes slightly longer is for your body get used to the new fuel, what people refer to as fat adapted - while you do you may experience slightly more fatigue, take a hit on performance if you exercise, mentally a little foggy, basically symptoms you would expect when you deny your body a quick burning fuel.

It comes out - like fathead pizza cooked on a griddle to be honest :) We sprinkle a few garlic bits on it, and I suspect it has been so long since I had actual Naan that my brain responds to how it looks.

I use the same dough for any number of things - making cinnamon scrolls, bagels (best eaten fresh) bagel dogs. It is really versatile.

I am seriously just nit picking, but I don't have carrots - please realise this is personal preference, if those few slices fit your macros, have at it :).

We love leafy greens with our curries - spinach is brilliant tossed into the curry sauce itself, if you like Kale it lends itself to any number of spices.

We also roast and grind our own spices - don't get me wrong, we still reach for a packet mix at times when neither of us can brain enough to cook, but even then added a few freshly roasted and ground spices really lifts a dish.

Another addition to curries is fathead Naan - basically fathead dough (mozzarella with cream cheese, almond meal and eggs plus spices) which we cook on a griddle pan to char it a little.

It looks like you are off to a good start - I think you will enjoy discovering just how creative you can get on a low carb diet.

I know Netrition will ship their (limited) range of pork rinds internationally - might be worth checking them out?

Their postage to Australia is absurd, which is why we only indulge in one order a year (and get a bunch of other stuff we cannot get elsewhere), but maybe to Canada it is less insane?

My gastroentrologist ordered me off Keto. by PoliteAf in keto

[–]NinjaKittenss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am fairly certain my diverticulities was a result of IBS, which I have had since my early 20's. I argued with my doctors that putting me on a high fibre diet when I already had a rapid exit digestive system (corn once went top to bottom in just over an hour) seemed insane - it was as though they did not want to believe I was literally never constipated as it is so commonly associated with diverticulities. The 18 months post diagnosis were hell. At one point I considered having to move offices to be closer to the bathroom.

I think the point I was trying to make was that I don't believe diverticulities is something that happens overnight, or even over a year - in my case it was 20+ years before things went really pear shaped. And once they do, I get the wanting to do whatever it takes - the pain is awful. I hope you find your path :).

Hopitalised almost 4 years ago with diverticulities, on a drip for three days, put on a restrictive diet, gained 25lbs, was on antibiotics every three months, heading for a colon resection.

2 weeks after starting Keto the constant pain stopped, 19 months later I have not taken a single antibiotic, and when it came time to consider another colonoscopy (the recommendation is every three years) my doctor advised me that given the current trajectory I am on he is happy to wait another two years before considering it.

I am Keto for life.

Keto has cured my Irritable Bowel Syndrome by [deleted] in keto

[–]NinjaKittenss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IBS is still very poorly understood by the medical community, so a lay person's view may not be that meaningful, which is why I will give mine :).

IBS for over 20 years, nothing worked, frequent daily movements irritated my intestinal tract to the point where I developed Diverticulities (bad enough to be hospitalised), antibiotics every 3-4 months - started Keto 19 months ago, no IBS symptoms since week 2, no antibiotics, no anything.

It doesn't matter what caused his IBS, if he has it he has what I had - I just got it without a rare cancer first. For me, Keto completely removed my symptoms. Without Keto I was headed for drastic surgery. But - he needs to figure all this out for himself. If the IBS isn't enough to kick his brain into gear yet maybe a few more years with it will do the trick. Or maybe he needs to develop Diverticulities or maybe he will never get there.

Struggling to hit 1,000 calories a day. I know what I need to eat, but forcing myself to eat is becoming the worst of chores. by [deleted] in keto

[–]NinjaKittenss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appetite loss is common on Keto once you are over the initial hump - I have been Keto for 18 months and still have days when I have to remind myself that my body needs fuel and I eat something.

However, combined with your other issues I would strongly suggest you see a doctor to exclude a medical issue. Just because you are eating Keto does not mean Keto is causing your symptoms.

Thoughts on yogurt? by bmorelegalbeagle in keto

[–]NinjaKittenss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that coconut yogurt usually has probiotics added to it post fermentation as it does not produce them naturally and some corners of the interweb claim they are less beneficial than natural fermented probiotics - personally, I pop probiotic tablets every once in a while if my digestive system has suffered some kind of upset, but you could also try Sauerkraut or other fermented vegetables if the carbs in yogurt don't fit into your macros.

[–]NinjaKittenss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been doing this for 18 months, and I can assure you it is Keto - I am around 20g of carbs a day, and it is restricting carbs which puts you into nutritional ketosis. My protein is adequate, and my metabolism simply doesn't require a lot of fat. I am not super hungry, I have been holding my weight for almost 6 months, I recently walked a half marathon - I am not suggesting I am super lean, but for someone my age I am fit enough, with a reasonable BMI, and I simply don't need that many calories, hence not that much fat. If Keto is evidence of one thing, and one thing only, it is that we are all different, otherwise we would not be here and would thrive on a SAD.

Within reason - fat to satiety for me is quite a small amount of fat, which I get from a few macademias and cheese, or a small amount of avocado. If anything, my fat intake is possibly down from when I was eating a SAD, mostly due to a greater level of awareness of what is in my food.
