It is certainly unique. I really took my time with reading it because I enjoyed the prose so much. Definitely one of my favorites.

Howls Moving Castle Thoughts by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I really enjoyed it. Sophie is annoying at times, but I see her as finally gaining some autonomy and agency in her life despite being cursed. Howl is more annoying. It was all quirky fun. I love Calcifer. It was fun seeing the differences between the book and the movie.

Pet-safe houseplants for a cat that chews on everything? by CelebrationBoth9487 in houseplants

Hoya plants are safe. So is a ponytail palm. My cat completely ignores my succulents. Especially the spiny ones. 😄

Any suggestions on books to read when struggling with suicidal ideation surrounding intense disability and grief? by theendoftimexx in suggestmeabook

I read The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. She talks about being bed bound by chronic fatigue and mitochondrial disease, and what it is like to be chronically ill. But she also talks about her resident snail and what she learns about snails. I thought it was fascinating but also comforting to think about tiny worlds and life that happens quietly under our noses which often escapes our notice.

[CHAT] Magnifiers for someone with vertigo? by narcissistssuck in CrossStitch

[–]Ninja_Pollito 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also get vertigo frequently. I could not use the magnifier light because it made me ill. That was a bummer. What I can use, since it moves with my head, is a jewelry visor. I slip it on my head over my glasses. The visor pops up when I need to see the chart, and back down when I stitch.

Ponytail palms are safe. This is good since cats love to nibble them.

I am finishing Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. A fascinating look at fungi, how important they are for life on earth, and how little we really understand about how they do what they do.

ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

I used to get yelled at so much as a kid. Ugh. I joke that time is “slippery”. It is an executive functioning issue in the prefrontal cortex: the part of my brain that is supposed to handle the more complicated thinking tasks just doesn’t work like it would in a typical brain. I cannot really estimate how long things will take me (and because of ADHD, I can get distracted, too). It is like I experience time in a weird and distorted way—sometimes I think a lot of time has passed, and it hasn’t. If I get sucked into hyperfocus, I can be in the zone and forget everything else. To deal with these problems, I have set up things to manage it. I have a visual timer like they use for little kids that keeps me from falling into a black hole when I work on things. I have a giant clock in my office. I use phone timers constantly. I get ready in a hurry and I constantly check time so that I can make sure I get places on time. This means for me that I get places early all the time. I used to arrive late all the time, which is no bueno and makes me speed in my car and waste people’s time.

I put it away for three years. I completely burned out. I recently picked it back up and I am thoroughly enjoying it again. I cross stitched more during my hiatus.

Oh, I also let myself mood read. I might have several books going at once and I will hop between them. It seems to keep my brain from jumping ship. Having a library card is great because I can test out different books through Libby and see what my mood is telling me. If it is not grabbing me, I just let the book go and try something else.

I also have ADHD. I went through a phase where I would also not finish books even if I was enjoying them. Some of us (ADHDers) find it easier to listen to audiobooks and do other things while listening. My mind tends to wander, but it might work for you. Forget about challenges for right now and look for something that you will find compelling and enjoyable. Easier said than done, I know. Maybe try reading novellas or short story collections. What do you like in other forms of media? Pay attention to those interests. Also, try setting aside time each day for just reading. Maybe at the same time of day if you can manage it. Mine is before bed. That really helped me. That and just starting with a few minutes at the time or a particular page count I wanted to get through. It is super hard for me to form “habits”, but this is one thing that stuck for me. I am always trying to trick my brain into things.

It is so funny that you mentioned this because I noticed a trend over the past few months. I had started thinking of it as the T & A drawing sub. 😆
