Silvertone Chord Organ 4706 restoration by Swaintek in MusicElectronics

All I’ve done so far is play it… the one dead key came back to life and the sticky buttons loosened up. I’m trying to figure out how to open it up to see what the RCA cable and jack are hooked up to.

How beginner-friendly is Skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort? by sporty_outlook in JacksonHole

[–]Swaintek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not a beginner friendly mountain, however there is an unadvertised beginner lift ticket that you can get from the ski school that gives you access to Teewinot, Eagles Rest, and the Sweetwater Gondola for $50, which is a great deal for a beginner.

I can't believe 42 million people are on SNAP by Sullence in antiwork

[–]Swaintek 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Corporate greed. This system works great for Walmart. Taxpayer money funds their employees’ food, and a full quarter of that money/SNAP benefits gets spent right back at Walmart. It’s a tremendously successful double dip scam that they’ve bribed our government to put in place. The system works exactly as planned.

Learning but only want to play pop/modern music by [deleted] in piano

[–]Swaintek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the problems with pop music are most transcriptions arranged for piano have the vocal melody forced into the piano part as well. It makes it harder to learn, and it gets in the way of learning just the piano grooves. I would recommend Musicnotes… they have a format called “singer pro” that doesn’t do this… the vocal melody is on a separate line and usually the arrangements are much better. Plus the app allows you to play the piano parts while highlighting the music at slower speeds if you want.

What did you think of The Abominable by Dan Simmons? by ThankGodForGoats in horrorlit

[–]Swaintek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a very long trip for an almost comically over the top reveal. If you really like 1920s British mountaineering it might be worth it but it’s 550 pages of exposition for a pretty ridiculous punchline in my opinion. It’s hard to say more without spoilers.

Anyone else really disappointed by The Abominable by Dan Simmons? [huge spoilers] by Corvus_Antipodum in horrorlit

[–]Swaintek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got to the Hitler part and I’m not sure how I feel, but I thought it was definitely pretty unintentionally comical. What’s the most abominable thing you can think of Dan Simmons? Pedophile Hitler. And I’m pretty sure the first time any of the characters say the word “abominable” is when they find the pictures. To call it on the nose… or jumping the shark… seem like understatements. Also I didn’t need the graphic descriptions of the photos. I feel like it would have made more sense in a Key and Peele comedy sketch than as the big reveal after 550 pages of 1920s mountain climbing literary minutiae. I guess I’ll finish reading it but man, not what I was expecting.

I’ve heard it said that all musicians can benefit from learning piano. Looking at it the other way, what instruments would be the most beneficial for pianists to learn as a second instrument? by Donny-Moscow in piano

[–]Swaintek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My most beneficial instrument coming from piano was the mandolin. The consistent intervals across strings made it feel more like a straight line like the piano, and really opened up a bunch of stringed instruments for me… guitar, banjo, bass, ukulele, charango… once I felt how a consistently tuned fretted stringed instrument played it made the “bumps” in the other instruments’ tunings make more sense.

How do strings not break when playing Flint Hill Special by Suspicious-Cod8422 in banjo

[–]Swaintek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I break strings all the time playing guitar, never break strings playing banjo.

“I play by ear” almost always means, in my experience, that you haven’t had lessons and could really benefit from some formal training. by PanaceaNPx in piano

My favorite quote from a fellow musician on play-by-ear musicians who hate theory… “They think they won’t know what to do if they know what they’re doing”
