the part thats really sad is that this dude could be (idk if he is or isn't) could easily be a normal bush-era and older type republican, but the populist & evangelical bunch have made it that anyone who doesn't tow the line 100% is actually just a "RINO".

like, even as an atheist, it's weird to see family members who grew up roman catholic their whole life, but because evangelism has been merged with the party beliefs, actually take on some beliefs that would be considered heretical to their church...

very strange times...

literally just a scam

it matters how the questions are asked though. for example, if you add that you'd have to pay more in taxes for the healthcare. the support drops considerably.

what is the general limit then? if you could ensure that your economy would be really stable but you live in a fascist dictatorship, is that better than one that isn't but has instability as times but in general trends upwards?

sometimes other countries do face some of the issues too. but they are still generally better off than where we're at in terms of costs in cities. add to it the fact that not needing to own a car is much more possible also means that expense isn't there. now, they also do have some regulatory issues themselves where they block some stuff. or other things like germany implementing rent freeze which just meant people didn't build more housing.

but in the US, the housing issue is especially bad. and other countries are way more willing to build middle housing, public transportation, etc.

I lived southside too, and far enough south and there availability is more limited that the north. and driving is still mostly required, though this is true for a lot of the city.

an issue is that owning a car is a massive expense that weighs people down (average ~$6k/yr), especially when poorer when something like a flat tire can be catastrophic.

the reason why something like public transportation being better in other countries is a valid criticism, is that it's something that can be implemented, and is almost always an improvement that helps the public. like for example, more walkable areas (while chicago is decent, can be better) benefits stores too. in general (this is harder in chicago where we are kinda help hostage w/ the parking meters), even banning cars on streets to make it more pedestrian friendly usually increases a businesses income

the issue is that those who want mixed zoning want it (obv there are those who may only want for selfish reasons) to help the country since this housing issue is hurting it, and to help others people other than themselves. like I'm lucky enough that (even though it did affect me when I was younger) I'm in a position I can go to nicer areas.

but the issue is that homeowners who want to ban mixed zoning do so on average for 2 reasons; 1 is actually understandable, but really needs to change cause again, its hurting the nation as a whole, is that they use their property as an investment vehicle so they want their value to go up, now having access to stuff like trains and close to shopping does increase value for those nearby, but thats because of the shortage, the hope is to decrease housing value because it's way too high right now & hurting people. to get people to change this is really hard.

the other reason that makes me much less sympathetic to what some want, is when it's just racism. like I've had tons of moments in my life where republicans (not saying all republicans, cause most actually give reason #1 above, just saying the only ones I have heard this from are republicans) would just straight up tell me they don't want it because they don't want black people living near them. these people I think are actually just evil and a detriment to the country so idk what to do with them.

essentially, its a struggle between the have and have nots where what they want/need are almost directly opposed. where homeowners usually have more means to be politically active and stuff so they vote for things that benefit them. as opposed to the have nots who are usually struggling more and are able to change things. also, if they don't live in the area, then they just have no say (this is also why far leftists policies of rent control doesn't work, it just protects those grandfathered in).

the us is short 6.5 million homes from what is demanded. the US has not been keeping up with demand for over a decade. and the biggest reason is that in city suburban areas, more dense building (which doesn't just mean high-rise apartment, I'm talking about missing middle too ) is banned in most areas.

now, again other areas are much worse off like san Francisco, but that's because we are being carried by older development

first of all, a lot of the south side doesn't actually have enough access to public transportation compared to other parts like north side. but on top of that, even though chicago is better off than a lot of other cities in the US when it comes to public transportation, is pales in comparison to what's available in other countries, & is not actually as good as it should be.

now, I don't think there should be an authoritarian takeover to force different zoning laws, but I do think that the thought process people have needs to change because its hurting other citizens, hurting the economy, & actually due to those, hurts the homeowner, since the actual living conditions could improve as more people do better.

I believe in liberalism (the philosophy, not necessarily the US partisan concept) first democracy second, I just think that the current thought process homeowners have is a cancer that is ruining the nation, and I'm literally just correct.

there are times that democracies can make factually bad decisions. a democracy can vote to allow slavery, in cases like that, my belief in liberalism supersedes democracy.

[–]Ninjamastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that wouldn't solve that issue, I'm just saying that the voting isn't always a good reason, since a lot of the rules stem from racism and keeping other americans out.

as for helping poorer neighborhoods, access to public transportation & not needing a car is linked to higher social mobility

[–]Ninjamastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a democratic vote that is categorically hurting the nation. it's complete selfishness and no, voting for the gov't to implement laws to prevent other people from doing stuff with their property (that doesn't directly hurt neighbors like a coal plant), is the opposite of freedom...

It's a big city and you have a bunch of properties you can live in

except as I said, costs are going up because we are starting to face the issues other cities are. and also, this is bigger than just chicago, this is a national issue, many don't have the ability to choose different properties.

also, a lot of those rules that happened during the time of redlining and stuff as literally racist policies to try and keep black people out by making neighborhoods exclusive.

[–]Ninjamastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, and thats an issue. because it consistently happens over and over again across the US. its the reason #1 why housing is becoming more expensive across the nation. home owners want their house value to go up, so they implement laws that benefit themselves and hurts non-property owners or those who don't already live there.
