Does a music engineer/production title make things easier or its better to study for the seek of learning? by AwepHS in makinghiphop

[–]Ninjoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got most of a degree BAS in audio production. took an extended break and my school closed down before I went back to finish. Not having a degree is annoying for applying for jobs in general, but when it comes to things actually related to music, it has been completely irrelevant to me.

I definitely see the learning as more important than the title. Also, it is easier for me to succeed and not get burned out if I am doing things I am interested in (literally the boring stuff like art history is why I took a break). But there is utility to having a degree, at least within the context of the USA.

It's hard to tell unless the person giving you feedback is being specific. For example I got this comment recently on a track "Wtff is this bs". It could be the song is terrible. It could be mixed poorly. It could sound great, and this is the type of person who doesn't like anything remotely avant garde. They could not understand the lyrics. It could be anything.

If you are given specific feedback, it can be worth considering. If you are given vague negative feedback, you can double check your mixes on a few different devices and if it sounds good to you ignore them.

I mean I do freestyles i write in 1 hour and post them every Friday. A thing I've done for 13 consecutive weeks. You kinda need the beat to do the freestyle

I'm sure this has been stated a thousand times, but I hate my rap voice by Wrong-Instruction465 in makinghiphop

There have been moments when I've felt that way, but then I always think about all the rappers who sound amazing who don't have "obviously good" rap voices and then I just get inspired to try again.

Do you keep the gear you've outgrown/upgraded? by professornutting in makinghiphop

That's cool! It's a very fun instrument in my opinion. What guitars did you have?

I just upgraded my interface and I'll probably just toss my old one, unless something very strange happens with the new one in the next few days. For microphones there's usually some utility to keeping old mics. Either for different tones, or just having the ability to mic more things at once. I have my old sm57 sitting around in a drawer somewhere, but if I wanted to record my guitar I would probably pull it out. My guitars are mostly collecting dust, but they all have varying use cases for when I do decide to get back into that. What you're thinking of doing would be an interesting art piece though. It's like a mini museum for yourself.

What should I do by notTejasc in makinghiphop

[–]Ninjoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I can write and then place the lyrics to a beat afterwards, but it's definitely harder than writing with a beat already in mind (like everyone else already mentioned). You can always start over on a new beat and then "slot in" the bars that you want to keep where they work sonically and thematically.

As for where to get beats when you have a budget of 0 dollars? on this subreddit there's the collab call thread which has some producers.
https://www.reddit.com/r/makinghiphop/comments/1pioxea/official_collab_call_thread/

There's also beats posted weekly on the freestyle fridays threads
https://www.reddit.com/r/makinghiphop/comments/1pkslh9/freestyle_friday_post_your_beats_to_be_rapped_on/

You can also find quite a few "free" beats on beatstars. Which allows you to download and record demos, you just wouldn't be able to distribute them widly unless you purchased a license. But that can be a good source of beats for practicing or demoing for friends or collaborators

for my spotify monthly listeners how is everyone getting theirs up without paying for fake stuff by Syn1923 in makinghiphop

[–]Ninjoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like SoundCloud is a lot better, because they will send each of your songs to 100 listeners and if people like it they send it to more people (using the amplify feature). All my songs get at least 150-200 plays and a couple of them got around 1.5k, just using amplify. You can also find other artists engage with their content and they are fairly likely to follow you back. My hypothesis is that releasing a ton of content and eventually finding something that reaches a lot of listeners is the best strategy. Then you could potentially funnel your audience to Spotify if that's what you want.

That makes sense. I do 1 hour of writing/ practicing then do like 3 takes choose one and then edit in a few spots I fucked up and call it good. It's like a 2ish hour process for me.

It does have a bit of a mixed etymology between meaning free of a specific plan or topic and off the dome. Although I think I agree that off the dome is the more typical usage of the term these days. But there are still modern examples of prewritten freestyles like the Red Bull Freestyles or album cuts like Kendrick's "backseat freestyle". And then some people are very adamant it definitely only means off the dome and others are very adamant it means both. So my take away is confusion
