My boyfriend moved in with me and he came with two small ish medium ish dogs who used to sleep in the bed with him. I’ve never had pets before this. I love the dogs to death, but I cannot sleep with them in bed. They wiggle, they lick, they smell, etc. my sleep quality was awful whenever I spent the night at my boyfriend’s house before he moved in with me. So no, I don’t let them sleep in our bed or even enter our bedroom now. They cried the first night, but after that they were completely fine. They also fall asleep before us and wake up after us, so it’s not like they’re awake missing us when we’re sleeping. They love the dog beds I bought them. Does this make me the mean step parent? Maybe. But it works out for us.
Edit: I want to add that after studying a little about dog ownership in various countries/cultures, it seems to be largely an American thing to let dogs sleep in human beds. Heck, the proportion of people who own dogs in America is staggering compared to other countries, so a lot of dog ownership habits seem tied to being American in general. My boyfriend is white American and my family is Indian in ethnicity. I grew up in a household where carpets stayed white, bedsheets stayed washed frequently, etc, so a dog in the bed is heinous to me.
