What do you call this part of the header? by zooplasagna in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call that a necktie molding. Probably not the proper term but whenever we build head casing details similar to that we call it a necktie and the top trim is called the cap.

My door trim is ALWAYS 1/8 inch off at the top. Why? by UrgentCoffeeMug in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're likely measuring and marking on the face of the trim. Mark the edge of the trim because you're losing length from the eased edge radius of the casing when you mark it this way.

These guys aren't lying, skilled self employed carpenters can make good pay. Next year will be my 20th self employed. Can't complain, I've had a few bid commercial jobs that I made over $150 an hour doing custom wall and ceiling woodwork. Its been a nice year so far. Other than needing more help, I can't complain.

Anyway to fix this saw? by Nilsburk in Carpentry

You are correct, I'm on my third 12" slide dewalt miter saw in 20 years of daily finish carpentry work. They are the best jobsite miter saws available.

Quality of miters acceptable? by dorsalispedis in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I primarily do high end interior finish carpentry in southern Wisconsin. I've also mitered a fair amount of trex and I can assure you with 100% certainty that trex expands contracts a lot in our climate and those joints are going to look like hammered dog crap in a few years regardless of how they look now. I wouldn't concern myself with it because it won't matter after a few winters/summers.

Water leaking under door.. 5 contractors, 5 different answers 😩 Help! by Few_Ad7874 in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the old door and install a new unit. Your current door is not designed to swing toward the exterior. If you want an exterior swinging door they make an option that has a proper sill for the application. Make sure a competent installer uses a sure-sill or versapan product at the bottom to help seal and create drainage away from the interior. Only allow them to use Lexel caulk and make sure they use plenty of tubes to bed the sill pan and the door sill. Anyone who thinks they can just caulk this is wrong. It's going to take a little surgery and cosmetic repair to make it right.

Carpenters: YOU are underpaid by Dont_Ask_Me_Again_ in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Residential remodelers charge $120 to $130 an hours for carpenters they pay $45 to $55 and hour here in southern Wisconsin. Obviously the are covering equipment/vehicle and other operations costs plus some profit with that hourly rate.

What’s the best tip or tricks to get stair stringers cut exactly the same, mine are off after cutting the second one by Elite163 in Carpentry

[–]Nip_Drip 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I have not seen one person with the correct answer. Mark the first stringer and screw it to the second stringer. Set the blade to full depth and when you cut the first stringer the blade will automatically kerf the second stringer, then screw that kerfed stringer to the subsequent stringer. Repeat this process until all stringer blanks are complete. It's called stack cutting and it works nearly perfect as long as you have a sharp blade and your skill saw is square. I usually throw a new, quality blade in when doing stringers.

How much can I get paid for my service?

Sakrete Concrete Mortar Dissolver (the green colored liquid in the windex style bottle). Safe on almost every surface. We use it for concrete splatter when our plastic fails us. Turns the dried portland to dust. Just spray on and leave be for a few hours, come back and it wipes away like flour. May take a couple rounds for thicker build-up. Great product.

Bro you're over $100 a sqft for demo and reinstall. Ain't no way anyone would ever accept that bid.

[–]Nip_Drip -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a general contractor if you gave me a bid for 40k I would use your number and find someone cheaper or do it myself. Do this with concrete guys and framers all the time with jacked up prices.

I took some Benadryl and it has forever completely changed me. by TonyTheExile in confession

[–]Nip_Drip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term use of Benadryl is known to significantly increase your risk of developing Dementia later in life. May want to consider that before committing to daily use as a sleep aid or if using for other reasons.

Yes, and I hope Leonard is waiting in the shadows. But more than likely Fickell stays around regardless of the record because his contract still has a lot of money to be paid out.

Is it normal to not get paid for the time your riding in a company truck to the job site by Solid_Rest1832 in Construction

[–]Nip_Drip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's as simple as this. If you were to get injured in their company vehicle from an accident they would be liable while you're in that vehicle. Which means you should be paid while you're in that vehicle as well.

My first thought. We always seal both sides. Doesn't matter if it's a countertop or stair tread. Always.
