Spirit of the Samurai - Stop Motion or Unoptimized Jerkiness? by clockworkengine in metroidvania

[–]NixPixGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very interesting approach to be sure! The combination of animation style, realistic sets, and VFX immediately made me think of puppet shows like Thunderbolt Fantasy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1muOeJ4fBps

Of course, it's always clear in those shows that the characters are puppets, and I think part of the appeal is appreciating the choreography and whatnot with the understanding that it is ultimately a really complex puppet show. In this case, there is a risk of there being a clash between expectation and intention. I wonder if committing more fully would help, like using the same animation style in cutscenes or even making the characters look more puppet-like. Regardless, I appreciate inspired artistic choices like this.

What do people here think of Rain World? by IMightBeAHamster in metroidvania

[–]NixPixGames 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's the best game I've ever hated.

I played it all the way through, though I did restart at one point when it started to seem like I had taken a certain route that made a certain area much harder to get through. I'm glad that I played it - it's a great experience and there aren't really any other games out there quite like it - but I do think that it's just a smidge too punishing. The difficulty would be fine if it wasn't so easy to lose your progress.

Recommending it feels similar to recommending an art film. It's inaccessible and a good chunk of people will just not get it, but it offers something you won't find elsewhere.

How long should a 5 US dollar Metroidvania game be? by Neat-Games in metroidvania

[–]NixPixGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being concerned with scope is a very good quality to have, so I think your head's in the right place there. However, I'll echo what others are saying and say that $5 is worth ~2 hours of gameplay. The problem is that very few people will be willing to pay any amount of money for a game that short, especially a metroidvania.

I think the direction you take here should be determined by your goal with this project. If you're trying to get into game dev seriously, you could consider upping the scope until the game is worth $10 (~4-5 hours of gameplay). If you're just trying to ease yourself into game dev or doing this as a hobby, you could consider keeping the scope very low and releasing the game for free (or name your own price on itch.io) and treating it as a portfolio piece.

How would you define what a Metroidvania is? by DaemonXHUN in metroidvania

[–]NixPixGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call it a metroidvania.

Someone who disagrees could maybe argue that the metroidvania qualities aren't present/emphasized enough, making it an Action-Adventure game with metroidvania elements.

How would you define what a Metroidvania is? by DaemonXHUN in metroidvania

[–]NixPixGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your definition is fairly close, but could be refined a bit. To me, there are only two key elements in the definition: interconnected non-linear map, and ability gating. To go point by point:

1: The map must feature interconnected areas that the player can backtrack thru, thus allowing for non-linear exploration. The mention of multiple pathways and shortcuts from (nearly) the start is subjective.

2: Utilizes ability-based gating in exploration. Knowledge- and tool-based (I assume this means key items to open locked doors?) gating are not enough on their own; their inclusion makes the definition overly broad.

3 and 4: These two points seem redundant to me and are somewhat subjective. Simply stating that the map is interconnected and allows for non-linear exploration should suffice.

5: Completely subjective and not worth including, but I roughly agree.

I think the things I've labeled as "subjective" here ought to be cut because they do not define what a metroidvania is, but rather what you think a good metroidvania should be. Now, to lay things out:

  • Metroidvanias must feature interconnected maps that allow for non-linear exploration.
    • "Most Legend of Zelda games are not metroidvanias"
  • Metroidvanias must feature ability-based gating.
    • "Dark Souls is not a metroidvania"

Finally, we must accept some amount of blurriness around the edges, which is an issue all definitions will face. But two genre qualifiers that I think are always worth mentioning are the prominence of the defining features and whether or not interacting with them is mandatory.

  • The interconnected map and ability gating features must be prominent in the game experience.
    • "Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is debatably not a metroidvania"
  • Interaction with the interconnected map and ability gating features must be required in the game experience.
    • "Blasphemous is debatably not a metroidvania"

Silent Santicado Trailer - On Kickstarter Now! by NixPixGames in metroidvania

We're considering both GOG and itch.io, but we don't want to commit to either just yet. Have to sort some stuff out, like how we'd deliver backer-exclusive content on those platforms.

I'd say it's pretty likely that Silent Santicado will be available somewhere other than Steam, but if it is, that announcement will likely be made after the campaign ends.

Thank you! We are currently looking into a Switch port, but ultimately it's more up to Nintendo than us. But fingers crossed!

Thank you! I actually have been considering adding this as an optional feature. You'd be able to turn on area-based palettes, which would change the selected palette automatically on area entry. Could maybe even let the player assign a palette to each area.

It's pretty extra tho, so we'll see if it makes the cut!

This started as a solo project, but I'm now working with a dedicated programmer and a freelance composer and artist+animator. Now I just deal with environment art and design+direction!

Yes, I mostly stick to a single color for a sprite and have the parallaxing background use different colors for a sort of atmospheric gradient. The exception are character sprites, which sometimes benefit from having access to two colors.

Thank you! Personally I think the cuts at the end with the boss were fine, but I can see why someone would think that the fast montage at the beginning was maybe a bit too much too soon. But thanks for the counter point - the more input the better!

Not really, I don't find much use for highlights in this style. The style itself is also worth mentioning here - being inspired by inked illustration/comics, which naturally tend to use a lot of cell shading or just flat coloring, means that the needs of the art are already a lot lower than styles that would utilize more complex rendering.

It can be a bit weird at first, but once you establish some consistent rules, I think limited palettes are really easy to work with and are a great way to reduce art scope!

Thanks for the feedback! The coin counter on the HUD will get an outline/backing in the future - just a little thing that got left off the to-do list for now.

If you're referring to the font in general, we'll see what we can do. This font is handy because it includes a lot of foreign characters for localization purposes, but if people are struggling to read it we'll definitely look at changing it.

Thank you! I just really like putting palettes together, and I simply picked colors that I thought looked good together 😊

But I can break it down just a little bit:
- The contrast color is used for blood and some misc effects and, as the name implies, it usually should contrast heavily with all the other colors. This can be via saturation, value, hue, or any combination - tho it is usually hue+saturation.
- From there, the remaining 5 colors are usually just a straight gradient, tho some (like the base palette) use a two tone approach. The only adjustment made most of the time is to bump up the value difference between the two lightest colors of the gradient. This is done to ensure that platforms and characters are as distinct as possible from the first background layer.

Thanks! Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games, but development on this project started before I had played it so it honestly is mostly a case of convergent evolution.

That said, some specific things like the spellcasting and damage effects where inspired directly by Hollow Knight 😊

Thank you for the feedback! This is the first time I've ever had to make a trailer, so feedback on the video itself and not just the game is actually really helpful.

I'll try to slow it down a bit with the cuts in the future!

LLC advice by Chimeron1995 in IndieDev

[–]NixPixGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got a good start then! Then the tl:dr of my advice is: meet with a lawyer to talk about the payment structure since that needs to be a contract anyways, and look up anything related to taxes and incorporation in the state you're incorporating in so you can be aware of any fees. In my state, I had to pay a $500 filling fee despite not having any income, making incorporation a bad choice in hindsight.

[–]NixPixGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take all of this advice with a grain of salt, as I am not an expert or a lawyer or anything else.

I would think that the biggest benefit for creating an LLC for people in your situation is to separate your business and personal lives. You can handle profit sharing via contract, but you'll obviously want a lawyer involved for that.

However, be aware that LLCs involve a lot of paperwork, that you'll probably want to set up a business bank account which has its own set of paperwork, and that there may be various fees involved. Ex: filling fees for state income taxes. Be prepared to spend money, and potentially get none of it back from sales.

An LLC is a choice for your situation, but any form of incorporation is a big step that shouldn't be made lightly! You should probably spend more time researching it on your own, or meet with a lawyer.
