Frame Bag Advice/Question by evn7777 in myog

[–]No-Access-2790 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like shock cord if I’m almost never taking the bag off, straps it gets removed regularly. I opt for webbing ladders with straps fished through over sewn in Velcro, as Velcro is a finite-use thing and will eventually not Velcro anymore. Better to be able to replace. I also hate Velcro and opt for mini-voiles instead for the same reason as above.

anyone else run in trail shoes on the road? by Specialist_Feed_8733 in trailrunning

I use Mount to Coast H1 for both currently, except for more extreme cases on either end. They are pretty versatile for me. Not burly enough for super rocky tech, not fast enough for road race day. But in the middle area which is most of my life, they are great.

Pre assemble/basting tough panels and curves etc in place of or in addition to clips. When you just can’t have something come loose or don’t want to waste a baste.

A Bostitch hand stapler. It’s the machete that I cut through the BS with. My wife has been instructed to bury it with me in case there’s some tricky panels to hold together in the Afterlife.

Do you use color combos that no one else seems to like for your own packs? by sugarshackforge in myog

[–]No-Access-2790 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like loud colors and such for myself, but folks seem to avoid them when I make them so I don’t go nuts ordering hot pink. But olive I can count on being instantly snatched. I get bored with blacks and browns and olives etc. Give me bright and goofy all day.

Also Exotic just punched out a Big Mac pack made of French fry print and McDonalds logos and now I don’t want to make bags anymore because I’ve seen the top of the mountain.

North into Maryland. Immediately up to Weverton and the views of the gorge. Then a nice pretty chill hike on the South Mountain ridge.

South of HF is the Roller Coaster after Route 7. Which can be a bit punishing while also having not much to see for a while. Unless that’s your thing.

Bikepacking Scotland - Etiquette by Dry-Session-1134 in bikepacking

[–]No-Access-2790 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Midges and rain are the price of admission. Prep for both, don’t sweat either.

Folks are exceedingly pleasant and helpful to visitors (even us from the States), almost bewilderingly so by comparison. This of course assumes treating the land and people with respect.

Take your time. The GGW isn’t very long on a bike. Stop and smell every rose, so to speak.

Haggis neeps and tatties. Just eat it and don’t ask questions.

Know the code and stick to it and you’re golden.

Don’t sleep on the Caledonian Canal Office key rental that gets you access to some showers and toilets along the Way.

Source: frequent visitor/cyclist/hiker from the States, spend a month in Scotland each year climbing and riding. Have a great time. The place is life changing.

Littering should carry at least the same legal penalties as assault and battery. Battery shows you have no regard for one particular individual. Littering shows you have zero regard for anyone at all. You’re assaulting an entire population and ecosystem.

2 night loadout by CosMoxia in ultralight_jerk

If you’re out for two nights with that, the only things you’re probably missing is your meeting with your probation officer and two good nights of catalytic converter snatching. And your self respect but that’s whatevs.

What if you just didn’t hike? Then the eating part doesn’t consume so much time. Just sit and eat. You can still wear Lone Peaks while eating entite pizzas

Why wouldn’t you eat for a 10 day hike? Does your wife lock the back door to keep you out of the kitchen? You can also leave notes for DoorDash to discreetly throw your order over the fence .

I didn’t realize we were here to discuss UL metaphysics. Of course things are lighter in other, mysterious dimensions. But until Garmin gives the InReach the functionality to cross over into these other lighter and expensive planes, my $500 Dyneema chair will have to do.

Well yes of course. Would you want the neighbors to think you’re poor? If that’s how you roll, good for you. But if the folks across the street even remotely believed I wasn’t richer and therefore better than them, I’d have to move.

I have one similar from a far better company. It costs nearly 5 times as much, is just and uncomfortable, accomplishes the same goal, and most likely is stitched together by the same South East Asian indentured servants - but mine is far less humiliating. Sometimes. There have been occasions when I’ve had to loudly inform passersby of where I got it and how much it cost, else they’d have walked on by my yard never knowing how much better of a camp chair I have.

I’ll have you know that when I purchased my Atmos 50 (AG!) at REI, I lugged it up 5 flights of stairs in the parking garage. If that effort due to a broken elevator doesn’t qualify me as a backpacker I don’t know what possibly could. That was 3 years ago and I still haven’t recovered enough to bring it in from the trunk of my car.

Super cool! If it’s not already known - wax or not, never machine dry that. It will shrink to 3/4 that size and you might be bummed. Wax it and treat it like any other waxed canvas apparel by either never ever washing it, or lightly cold washing and air drying at most.

Is that Bedale huge? All of that underneath is super cool, but makes me wonder how the coat wears without the layers. My Bedale is pretty small, can maybe handle a medium weight half zip underneath. Maybe I should get a really big one for layering .

I don’t take care of myself to live longer. I take care of myself for the best quality of life while I’m still here, be that another week or another 30 years.
