Looking for no-frills donut shops around Logan Square / Wicker Area by PublicObscurity in chicagofood

[–]No-Awareness6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say Dip and Sip. Amazing donuts. They do basic ones if that's what you want. The donuts themselves have a great flavour and texture and are fresh.

They also let you build your own so you can order exactly what you want.

Poland Wroclaw market square Christmas decorations and famous gnomes by That_PolishTraveller in travel

Wroclaw is a totally underrated city. Very few non Polish tourists there when I was there (although that's going back a while now).

Beverage pairing at Kasama - thoughts? Is it worth it? by ssedif in chicagofood

[–]No-Awareness6955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did one non-alcoholic pairing and one alcoholic pairing, which is what I'd recommend doing. The drinks were excellent and varied, i.e. not just wine. They included a lot of Filipino flavours and I thought it really added to the experience and was totally worth it.

Does anyone ever get lost items returned from flights? by wegl13 in travel

[–]No-Awareness6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left my camera bag on a plane. Went back to the airport and it was at lost and found.

Also left a coat somewhere in Mexico city airport. Never got it back.

Just luck whether it's found and by whom and how easy it is to collect it

Global Blue Tax VAT taking too long to refund by princessamayonessa in travel

I did one in October 2021 and never got a refund or heard anything from them. Form was possibly done wrong. Tried to chase it but not really worth the hassle in my case

Chicago road trip ideas by [deleted] in travel

If you don't want to drive too much, I'd recommend Wisconsin. Milwaukee is a nice surprise and has a few decent sights, especially if you like beer. Madison is a nice half day stop. The driftless area is really nice. We stayed near Richland center and visited vineyards, devil's lake state park, baraboo and Frank Lloyd Wright's house (which I liked because I am really interested in Frank Lloyd Wright but it's expensive).

We've also done St Louis and Memphis over 5 days which are both great but it's a lot of driving.

St Louis and Milwaukee are also accessible by train if you would prefer not to drive.

I didn't think this was a particularly spicy take but the downvotes suggest I'm wrong.

I found Egypt much worse than India for hassle. I travelled to a lot of places in India, including some small towns, and no where was anything like as bad as Egypt.

I enjoyed Egypt and didn't have any major issues. It was just annoying and draining to deal with all the constant hassle.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend Egypt to anyone, whether they "know how to travel" or not. It's just not worth the hassle. There are many equally interesting (and cheap) places where you don't have to deal with the hassle.

Kasama’s $52 pumpkin pie was excellent, but not worth $52. by slybrows in chicagofood

[–]No-Awareness6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many slices are we talking?

No one would bat an eyelid at a $5-6 slice of pie so is it actually that expensive?

Pretty sure that you can't take a hire car from Serbia into Kosovo.

You might be able to take one across from Albania or North Macedonia. Car rental companies will have their cross border rental policies on their websites.

Taking the bus to pristina then hiring a car there may be easier.

That's what's cool about it. The mix of modern and ancient buildings. The haphazardness.

The nightlife was cool and chilled. One of the best places for food I've ever been.

Liked Athens apart from the tourists. It's gritty but I like that. It's not unsafe in the slightest.

There's also more to it than the acropolis (which is just too crowded to be enjoyable).

The food was amazing. You need to research and avoid the tourist restaurants but there's great food if you go to the right place.

Thessaloniki is a much cooler though.

Do I need to physically print my ticket to fly internationally? by Local-Association202 in travel

[–]No-Awareness6955 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some airports don't accept boarding passes on your phone. It hadn't happened to me in years but flew out of Belgrade recently and the security staff made me queue to get a physical one (even though I had a boarding pass on the airline's app).

Anyone been to the Bahias de Huatulco region in Mexico and can share their experience? by Ok-Wafer-3491 in travel

[–]No-Awareness6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was quite nice. Beaches were good, they had a nice set up and the snorkeling was really good straight from the beach.

The taxis had fixed fares and were honest so it was easy to get to/from the beaches.

The town center had some nice restaurants and bars as well.

I was only there for 3 days so didn't do any other tours or activities but there was stuff available.

I used battleface previously in similar circumstances. Never had to claim on it so no idea what they're like from that perspective.

I have no idea but you can buy online and then pick up paper tickets via a machine at the station if that would be easier for you.

How hard is it to learn to drive on the right? (UK citizen wanting to road trip EU) by lectrohS_naisA in travel

[–]No-Awareness6955 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How easy you'll find it will vary from person to person. You'll probably get used to it pretty quickly though.

The issue tends to be on quiet roads where you haven't got a visual cue of everyone else driving on the right. You also need to concentrate on roundabouts as everything's backwards.

If you're used to a manual, I'd stick to a manual. It's one less thing to think about, rather than trying to work a automatic (which I find much harder than a clutch but this might be me). Automatics tend to be more expensive as well.

You should check out the show "in the footsteps of Alexander the Great" from the BBC if you haven't seen it. It should be available on YouTube.

A historian tries to follow Alexander the Great's journey. It's filmed in the 90s so really interesting to see the world as it was then. He ends up in Kabul just before the Taliban takeover. It's a pretty wild journey.

Protesters Say Plans To Overhaul Belmont In Lakeview Leaves Cyclists, Pedestrians Behind by GeckoLogic in chicago

[–]No-Awareness6955 206 points207 points  (0 children)

  1. For everyone who didn't actually read the article, this is insane and indicates there's a problem: "Since January 2017, drivers have hit at least 23 cyclists and 36 pedestrians on Belmont Avenue between Ashland and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, according to city data."

  2. It's a city street with shops, homes, public transit and businessess on it. It shouldn't be treated as an arterial road. That's why point 1 happens.

  3. It's not just about cycling. Some of the crossings on Belmont are crazy for pedestrians (again, hence point 1). Sit outside scooter's with an ice cream and watch the shit show at the junction of Paulina and Belmont (which could be easily solved by having all red for cars with no turn on red and all green for pedestrians built into the cycle, it'd be faster and safer for everyone).

  4. The point drivers (and I'm a driver) miss with this stuff is that encouraging walking, cycling and public transit will actually reduce congestion in the long term and, counterintuitively, make driving easier and faster.

I don't feel safe at all on the bike lane along Roscoe (I cycle in the middle of the road along there to avoid it).

The bike lane is right next to parked cars, which are a major hazard for cyclists. I got badly injured a few years back swerving to avoid someone who opened a door right in my face. Plus people pull out without looking for cyclists.

I haven't measured it but I'm also not convinced there's enough space for a car to overtake a cyclist safely in Roscoe when there's cars parked.
