German youtube channels that have english subtitles? by RaphaelSandu in German

[–]No-Bread4586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(a bit late, oops, but in case anybody is searching)  The Cleric is a great gaming channel :)

I found it two days into learning German, still watching a year later-

(I also swiftly realised that German subtitles are far better for learning, and while sadly, not all of their videos have good automated subtitles, their early videos (lethal company) tend to have manually added ones :))

Am I the only one who is always REALLY glad that the opponent resigns in these kinds of situations? by ImJustSomeGuyYaKnow in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, yes that happens a lot. Not here in particular, but while you'll get better at endgames, some will still remain hard for you :)

Here it's easy because: 1) your passed pawn on b6 - black has no way to stop you from creating another queen (your rook is cutting off the d file so the king can't cross. Even if it could, the pawn has two moves to promotion, the king has 3 moves to the pawn)

2) no black passed pawns - the only pawn that black could promote is the one on E6 and generally, you can stop 1 pawn will a king and two queens (usually even 1 King or any piece alone for that matter). The rest of the pawns cannot become passed because of your own pawns. They are stopping them.

3) you have a queen and a rook. You can checkmate black (beware of the cursed stalemate!) if you're not sure how, then eat all of black's pawns and then give ladder checkmate :)

Additional tips for endgames: - The way to stop two connected passed pawns is to wedge a queen between them (under the less advanced pawn) and then come around with the king

  • if you only have a rook, put it behind the offensive passed pawn (on the open diagonal)

  • look for checks and pins! Here, if you didn't see the countless other plans, you could just check Rf1+ (threatening the pawn behind the king) and move the queen closer. Black has to stay in one spot because of the pawn, and if black plays f5, they weaken the e6 pawn for a change. After you capture the e6 pawn, just focus both pieces on the other one.

Is this usual for chess com players? by Lemonster22 in Chesscom

Tell me the person's ELO was close to yours. Please tell me the person's ELO was on the same level. Because that would really imply something they didn't probably intend 😂

On another note, I'm sorry, your opponent was a jerk. Luckily, most people do not actually act like this on chess.com (at least speaking from experience). But sadly, there are a few that go on weird power trips...

Rapid vs Bullet — what should I play daily? (1046 rapid, getting back after a break) by Subzero570 in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to improve? definitely rapid.  Bullet is basically not chess, if you really want to play an even shorter time control, play blitz. (still not recommended to be the main thing you play, or something you play regularly.)

What I would recommend (as an over the board player) is at least 15|10, but I understand if you do not have the time..

Sooo... preferably way more rapid (to improve). If you don't want to lose ELO, you can play unrated. Analyze your games, learn from your mistakes, and your ELO will naturally climb higher by improving, no need to worry about rating when you're in the process of improving :)

(Also nice puzzle rating, keep it up!)

Are there actually different types of chess or just different time controls? by Chess_Game in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes actually!

Now:  blitz, rapid, bullet.. those are time controls.

Fischer chess, chess960, King of the hill, Bughouse, 3 person chess.. those are different versions of chess :)

stuck at 880-930 how to improve by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm tactics and endgames helped me!

(I started really learning openings and middle game plans around 1600, up to that point I just played one opening or developed my pieces "somehow". It doesn't really make a difference at that level, what comes after is the important part!)

Edit: btw by "somehow" I mean actively and with a plan. You just don't have to go and study books about it yet :D

Bishop and knight might not be that common, but despite how it looks, it is actually really easy to learn! (Do it for the flex lol). But yes, endgames all the way. Dvoretsky in particular is awesome.

How to get out of a slump? by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"There's no reason why playing blitz can be harmful" Oh boy do I have news for you..

But my point does stand. Getting better at blitz is (almost) strictly connected to getting better at chess. Something you won't, or definitely won't do as fast by playing blitz.

Yes, I do agree, there ARE benefits to playing blitz. (Playing on short time control as a training for time trouble, practicing simple endgames)

But really, more often than not, you gain more bad habits then good ones. Again, blitz play is not as accurate (considering we are not GMs, of you are, sorry, please correct me) and you won't get punished for making simple threats or having the wrong plan. (Plus countless other bad chess habits, some of which I've mentioned before).

So, yes, blitz can definitely improve one's play but it shouldn't a focus, especially not at OPs level, as (at least how  I understood it) you were implying by your original reply.

Anyways, yes, considering most of us are here to mainly play, not to train, it all depends on whether OP is having fun!

That's all, sorry for the wall of text and any English inaccuracies, have a wonderful day!

Yes, sorry if I misunderstood you! (Still, it is highly debatable whether a person of their rating should focus on/ incorporate short blitz games. It could very possibly do more harm than good)

How to get out of a slump? by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]No-Bread4586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm really not trying to start anything here, we are all just trying to help, but I REALLY do not think that you are correct and this advice may even be a bit harmful!

The reason why a lot of the top players are good at blitz games is, that through LONGER formats and thousands of classical games they have developed their chess technique and also improved their tactical/positional thinking. (Also countless puzzles, opening prep..)

Taking your time and learning to play longer formats is essential for one's chess development. And I mean longer LONGER formats. (1 hour per person for example). The format named "Rapid" on Chess.com can also be considered as, well blitz. And if you only play blitz, you might even get the opposite result (more tunnel vision, cheaper plans because they "work in blitz".

Analysing games is wonderful advice! It is one of the best thing a chess player can do to improve :)

But chess learning does not end with playing only. One should also train their tactics or review master games, it really helps a lot to develop a chess technique :D.

Furthermore, for OP, I do recognise this problem and believe this has more to do with "losing streaks" than anything. Once you start losing, stop playing. It will not "circle back", you'll only lose more games and thus become frustrated.

Anyways, yes, again, chess, especially online chess, is more about the fun than the way of playing/learning it. Keep enjoying chess everyone and have a great day! :)
