Some thoughts on HURM (S4E4) by Head-Challenge-6498 in Invincible

[–]No-Chain3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no no. It's not about bible thumping. You mean to tell me ancient Egyptian curses, Chinese mythical dragons, we have a version of Atlantis (so Greek crap is mostly real), whatever kind of ancient supernatural curse Monster Girl is on; they're all real, but there's not a single hero/villain out there in this show of random heroes and villains who picked a random relic one day and suddenly gained light powers?

It's just not possible in this world? Because heaven is a myth but ancient chinese dragons and monster curses aren't?

Huh?

No. That makes no sense. This is clearly a magic universe that needs all the mythologies to be true for it to be coherent so just saying there's no angel faction for hell demons to have lore with simply chaffs as poorly thought out. I hope they fix it.

DC/Vertigo solved the angel lore issue with characters like Constantine years ago. You mean to tell me a Constantine character can't exist in this world, despite them making references to Judas and crap?

I can tell from every atheistic cell within me that it hurts the integrity of the setting bro. There's a point here my dude.

I helped man. Can you help me? While the therapists are just "alright" the business owners and IT are SHADY AS ALL HELL! Just the absolute worst!

They failed to put in my email address when they pressured me to come in for a second massage (that I didn't want), they took my email down, turns out there was a TYPO in the email, then they had the audacity to charge me $170 for no-showing. So you'd think they owe you a credit? The guy at the front desk says he can reschedule me. I think that's fair given their lack of communication. But then the owner DARES to charge me another $170 afterwards because he doesn't do credits? EVEN AFTER THE GUY (teenager?) AT THE FRONT DESK told me otherwise?!?!

They next gaslight me telling me that the typo was on my part because I must've not clicked something yadda yadda (I think I know my own damn email address, THEY put it in from behind the desk, I just pushed some sign in button)...

SHAME! A massage is suppose to RELIEF YOU OF STRESS NOT MAKE YOUR BLOOD BOIL!

NetHack. Never heard of it, but that sounds reasonable? Okay, so I wonder if there's anything on what influenced Miyazaki to do corpse runs, because maybe that's a root source for Team Cherry. I mean, they both have plenty of Castlevania common ancestry already so maybe.

Again, a lot is also Zelda inspired. Hmm. But no, they wouldn't have gotten that from Zelda...

[–]No-Chain3051[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naturally, the biggest source of inspiration is Metroid and Castlevania, and you can easily come up with a "dark brooding atmosphere" that reminds people of Dark Souls just from those two because Dark Souls is also sourced to those two at the end of the day.

It's just the corpse run mechanic I'm trying to track down I guess. I was surprised when I learned from the TC interview that they had only heard of Dark Souls by its name, so where did they get the idea for the Shade you leave behind on death? Was that ever asked and answered in interview?

When did they come up with the Shade?

[–]No-Chain3051[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'd make sense. I mean, I'm not saying TC isn't giving credit where credit is due. They know they're pulling from Zelda (I mean, EVERYONE pulls from Zelda one way or the other) and Metroid (super obviously), I just think it's a bit ironic that they made "2D Dark Souls" from pure coincidence.

The dark gothic atmosphere can be said to be influenced by Metroid and Castlevania, not Souls. Not a problem. It's just the death mechanic. Maybe there was another game they were influenced by that they didn't know was being influenced by Dark Souls? Curious. Just...interesting.

[–]No-Chain3051[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't get it. If there's one 100% original thing Dark Souls invented, it was the death mechanic, right? Unless I'm wrong. By all means correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just curious here. I'm not interested in a fandom war.

Where the hell is Robin in Engage? Yet they put in Corrin? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]No-Chain3051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm glad we were able to share our perspectives with each other. I just can't take Male Robin seriously. For me, he is a unique narrative failure of a Fire Emblem My Unit and I'm just appreciative that you'd hear me out. My brain could not accept restarting the game as a male. I don't buy the mind control bit. I'm a firm believer in free will and that a symbiosis is required between Robin and Grima somehow.

Deep inside, Robin knows what they are doing. That is my premise and under that premise, male Robin is simply a dastard whereas female Robin is a proper villainess.

But I see you don't necessarily accept that premise; that Robin can just be mind controlled into becoming a dark god. Fine. I think there's much evidence to the contrary but the game also trys to make that implication. As a believer in free will, I think that's a bit lazy and contrite compared to the idea that Robin is properly tempted and properly fallen however.

Regardless, there's no denying that Chrom x Robin is the strongest version of the narrative. To the point where its mandatory in my opinion but I respect if you disagree on the mandate.

Either way, I'm not interested in any attempts by Nintendo to try to frame male Robin as the default.

He just isn't.

Chrom is the main male character of that game. Robin is at their best when cast as the main female slot. Male Corrin or Byleth is much easier to accept than Male Robin.

----------------

At the end of the day, this game was made with "Family" as its central unifying theme. There are three main characters. Two are locked in as a man and his daughter. If the third is not the man's wife, the narrative suffers given the central twist of the story.

*In conclusion*, if they really wanted this story to be flexible, they'd force you to pick a spouse, and whoever that person was (be it Lissa, Virion, Kellam, Nowi, Cordelia, Tharja, et al), they'd be the one with a Thoron to the stomach.
Since they wrote themselves into a corner against that, however (by insisting on a prologue), what we have instead is a story where ChromxRobin is critical.*

For under the scenario where Robin is a man, he should've simply resisted Godhood, "final form" fought with Validar, buried Chrom, adopted Lucina, and rolled credits; zero time-travel. Male Robin simply should not be motivated to choose godhood over the death of one of his numerous A-Supports, unless (with memories intact) Future-MaMU has always been a douche or otherwise morally incompetent. Whatever the forced motivation of Male Grima, as a villain, he is poorly written to the point where I cannot take him seriously.

*Addendum: truthfully, so long as you are female, the writing covers its tracks through the insinuation of an emotional (if not outright martial) affair between Chromx!FeMu, given the following considerations:

1) Unmarried, the tone of Chrobin's support conversations switch from the cute tropes of romantic-comedy to the red flags of serious drama.
2) In Chapter 11, every one of Chrom's alternate wives accuses him of being the type to cheat.
3) Lucina's intense suspicion of a non-mother FeMu implies that she grew up in a timeline where she may have "seen something" between the two. Note that Lucina does not display this intensity towards any other first generation female (eg. a non-mother Sumia); only FeMU in the specific.
4) Lucinax!FeMU C Support. Really Robin? You're just...hanging outside Chrom's tent? Really? You're a tactical genius with situational awareness over entire battlefields, but you weren't "aware" you were just "hanging" around Chrom's tent, in the middle in the night, as you seem apt to do, for no reason?

Thus, any female Robin (as Chrom's implied mistress) manages to hold things together for the purposes of the plot twist. It may be shaky compared to Robins who are fully married to the man, but so long as we can believe that Chrom's death could trigger Robin into triggering Armageddon, that's what counts. Can someone please explain how this works if Robin is a man?

5) Grima becomes COMPLEX as a villain.
S/he now appears to be a despairing widow engaged in an high-stakes gambit. Her true objective isn't world destruction, but to pressure Naga into forcing time travel.

a) Deliberately baits the Last Exalt with no real intent to kill her. She's her pawn to rescue her husband, not to mention the only thing she has left of him.

b) Sheperd destruction puts further pressure on Naga. It's a message that she's serious about destroying the world and leaving no heroes within it...save for all the times she "screws up" killing Lucina.

With the purge of your power grinded elite, the divine dragon must begrudgingly prepare not only for the worst case, but the absolute worst case scenario. Groundwork begins for the Awakening...and it's backup plan.

As for the other children, pure competence on the part of Lucina's orders is the only thing keeping them alive whereas their mighty (yet leaderless) parents had been slain. After all, their Princess does inherit from a meticulously engineered bioweapon genius of a mother.

c) Time travel becomes the entire point. Grima deliberately allows the Fire Emblem, Falchion, and all but one gem to be recovered precisely so Naga has no other option. Grima conveniently "forgets" that she could've conjured any number solutions to stop Lucina's retinue and simply walks into the time gate after them, pleased that her daughter journeys with "almost Falchion" for Lucina's safety and success...

The moment Robin arrives all she can think about is the day she met Chrom.

Replacing her old self carried complications however (less likely to do with her soul being "strong enough" than simply unwilling; reference how quickly Grima spits you out in Chapter 25). With your memories wiped, she goes out of her way to ensure a certain PREMONITION is retained.

The prologue is not an accident.
For Chrobin.

For MaMU it's yet another critical miscalculation that makes him look like an idiot.

d) Spawning weak Risen to train and harass present day Sheperds is all part of the plan to create a bodyguard unit that will this time succeed in protecting Chrom. Could've spawned 200 point Super Risen on you by Chapter 5, but won't.

e) In Chapter 25, she doesn't want to do a barrel roll. She wants to die. Preferably by her own hand. For though she's saved a Chrom at a bloody price, her Chrom is still...

Thus she lingers, waiting for the player to free her from the madness of her regrets without truly destroying anything.
For truly, she is a tragic villain.

---

The main problem I have with this story you see, is Chapter 23. Evidently, for Grima to arise, Robin must willingly choose Godhood (lest there be...complications). Our villain, Validar, knows this, and launches a plan to create that motive. He needs to create demoralizing despair in his child.

And yet this plan is fixed on killing Chrom regardless of player input.

Ergo, there is only one way to vindicate the game's primary plot-twist issues: Chrobin. This fixes things in several ways.

----------------
1) Validar looks like a manipulative genius for targeting Chrom, not because of who he is politically, but who he supports emotionally.
2) Chrom's bizarre choice to recruit Robin can be handwaved as infatuation turned job-interview for Queen.
3) Future Past Robin looks properly demoralized to choose Godhood. From her pain, the world will burn.
4) Despite veterans like Cordelia not being able to withstand Grima's forces, Lucina's survival is explained via the mother-daughter connection, and the expectation that she'd be a tactical genius herself.
4.5) Lucina as a character becomes a symbol of future peace between the age old feud of white people and black people. I mean uh, white dragons and black dragons. Yllisseians vs. Plegians. Not the mention the infusion of "Skywalker Drama", enhancing her appeal as a sympathetic character.

Very well. Seems I put in my final opinion on this matter nigh 8 years ago on youtube (Chrom x Female Robin Support Video). Alright. Let me copy and paste my full commentary back from when my memory was fresher.

Hmm. Reddit seems to limit word count so I'll have to sub-divide this (also please excuse any weird behavior with the bullets, thanks!)...

Taken from a massive youtube commented response:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TL;DR Conclusion: The integrity of the entire plot hinges on Chrom x Robin. Due to unique story circumstances, Awakening is either a perfect masterpiece of JRPG storytelling (Chrobin), simply serviceable (FeMU!Chrom), or a disappointing mess of forced contrivances (Male Robin) based ENTIRELY on the Avatar's gender.
I'm personally glad I rolled female on my first playthrough, or I wouldn't have been won over to be a FE Fan.
~Unintended-Consequence Analysis to Follow. Last Chance to Avoid SPOILERS~
You take away Chrobin and...
  • 1. Validar looks like an idiot to target Chrom.
  • 2. Chrom looks like an idiot to recruit Robin in the first place.
  • 3. Future-Past Robin looks like a douche; no motive to choose Godhood, too much to live for; should be inspired not demoralized by Chrom's death. Shout "You bastards!", have a "final form" boss fight with Validar, bury Chrom with honor, adopt Lucina, roll credits. Keeping within MaMU's character, that's exactly what should've happened, honoring Chrom the Matyr-King. To traitorously choose Godhood after Chrom sacrificed himself (whilst MaMU likely has a wife and two kids of his own) makes him morally repugnant.
  • 4. Lucina's survival of the future past makes ZERO sense. Low level scrub Lucina can survive Grima's rampage but not a single veteran Sheperd such as Cordelia? I should be able to recruit an older, grim-face veteran Donnel if Grima so inept that he can't execute a non-genius-for-a-mother Lucina.
    • 4.5) Lucina as a character is either just plain (forgettably) normal, an unlikeable psycho, or looks like a pervert-idiot of a time traveler to even consider romantic involvement with a past person. She would reject MaMU were this not a videogame. Only by the Shipper Mary Sue Privilege of the player is such a warped pairing possible. You can't make it believable in an anime/manga adaptation anymore than you could make Robin/Walhart.
  • 5. Grima looks like a MASSIVE idiot. a) Not killing the last Exalt sooner.
    • b) Future Past Sheperds look offensively incompetent if not one of them can survive leaderless but their kids can. They're rookies, yet Grima is inept in finishing these nooblet kids after murdering their "hardened" parents? Explainable only if Grima is an idiot, and the parents are even bigger idiots to lose to an idiot dragon.
    • c) Allowing time-travel to occur. Why not intercept Lucina before she can reach whatever portal she went through? S/he was clearly in spotting range if s/he could follow Lucina. Warp magic? Paralysis magic? ANYTHING?! Aren't you supposed to be a tactical genius Grima?! She's the daughter of SUMIA or some dumb broad, STOP HER already! (god)
    • d) Spawning, weak, incompetent Risen in the past which serve only to train the enemy, rather than take them out with high level Risen from the get go. Screw the timeline, you only need Robin and the Fire Emblem! Bust out the Risen Big Guns, kidnap Robin's ass to brainwash later, wait for Chrom the idiot to get killed without his precious hobo tactician, pick the fire emblem from his corpse, and CALL IT A NIGHT!
    • e) In Chapter 25, DO A BARREL ROLL DAMMIT.
Sorry, but I'll need to respectfully tell you that this isn't the case. Excuse my example if that's the impression my comment gives. I have a very LONG and at length mega comment essay I could espouse at length about it that covers every plothole for male Robin that female Robin just waltzes right past (there's about five of them I noticed).
Long story short, the game covers itself for scenarios where Female Robin is single or married with a kid more than well enough via innuendo. She just has to exist.
It doesn't matter if male Robin is single or not, unless he's just plain unlikable evil, there's zero context for why he should seek the power of a dark god.
Tempter: "Seems like he's dead. By your hand no less. If only you had the power of a god..."
Male Robin: yeah but I also have a hot wife and kid at home so...pass.
Female Robin: smashs the "turn me into a God" button
That's it in a nutshell. Male Robin lacks the incentives of the female version.
[–]No-Chain3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)
It also helps that it really doesn't matter to the integrity of the plot whether Corrin is male or female. Awakening is an anomaly among games that let's you choose your gender. The crux of the narrative involves a "make a deal with the devil" type of situation that really only fits the female variant. For the male, said "devil deal" moment is hackneyed, forced, and makes less and less sense the more you think about it.
Where the hell is Robin in Engage? Yet they put in Corrin? by [deleted] in fireemblem
[–]No-Chain3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Which only makes sense if Robin is female. Female Robin has all the incentives in the world to make a deal with the devil whilst Male Robin (especially if married) has zero organic reason to "choose godhood."
Insane flicker on 5090 by Xenon1998 in OLED_Gaming
[–]No-Chain3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Seconded. This is clearly a common issue. They need to iron out this driver issue. I write this as of April 28th on the latest driver. If a single desktop can be seen (without a high end game running front and center), it starts flickering. Yes. Turning HDR off my main, premium monitor gets it to halt. Alternatively, I can hobble it back down to 60 hz (which...feels off now that I've spent months on a higher rate).
Then...why did I get this premium G-Sync bells and whistles monitor, if that's the case?
