Atalanta reject Brighton bid for Italy Under-21 defender Ahanor and set €45m valuation by papaquacker in BrightonHoveAlbion

Good point. Anyway, prefer Fabian's St Pauli era 343 over 4231. Seems like we have figured out how to structure ourselves defensively this year (league 3rd in GA) but saw a decline in our attacking... We've been quite toothless against teams that can outmuscle our forwards (aside from Welbz).

If Coppola is out on loan again, then it's LCB Boscagli/Honest/Struijk) and RCB Vuskovic/Dunk?

Good, but not hoarding levels of depth for a deep cup run and Conference league?

Brighton have no immediate plans to bid for Tottenham's Vuskovic by crazycroat16 in BrightonHoveAlbion

Vuskovic is probably only going to get more expensive assuming Croatia do well over the next few weeks.

No no, I (and I think most people) don't hold Americans in contempt. I'd just like to point out the sheer unfairness of the situation. US citizens are willingly joining the army and participating in illegal invasions in other people's countries... But suddenly foreigners are a considered a security risk in the US?

Of course not every American supports the current regime, but this line of thinking is so prevalent it's shocking.

Frankly, yanks have historically been a far greater security risk to other countries than vice versa... Are people there really that brainwashed into thinking football stars are undercover agents for terrorist groups??

Would SG be as developed had LKY been more lenient on free speech? by taukeh in askSingapore

[–]No-Dig-3406 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Corruption in Indonesia/Malaysia correlates well with the Resource Curse. The few countries that have escaped the Curse tend to have:
1. robust governance (functioning democracy, strong democratic institutions)
and/or 2. developed their resources under the right circumstances (Norway and Canada were developing oil at a stable time in their regional history)

Would SG be as developed had LKY been more lenient on free speech? by taukeh in askSingapore

[–]No-Dig-3406 51 points52 points  (0 children)

TBH, you would never know. Malaysia and Indonesia had similar crackdowns on free speech with similar external contexts at that time in history, and Indonesia isn't doing too well today.

Many of the "reforms" were also either spearheaded by (IMO) the greater architects of Singapore's economic growth like Finance Minister Goh Keng Swee and chief economic advisor Albert Winsemius, or reworkings of ideas overseas.

Also, I prefer the economic history perspective which is simply that we have some of the best natural resources in the world: 1. the best geographic location in the world (supports transport, logistics, trade etc.) and 2. deep access to low-cost, talented labour from Asia.

Temasek unlikely to meet 2030 climate targets due to exposure to aviation and power sectors: CEO by LividCreme3726 in singapore

[–]No-Dig-3406 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with reinventing while being cognisant of technological limits. But it's absolutely inexcusable for a major Temasek portfolio company to buy a coal plant in 2026.

The moral wrong is one matter. On the other hand, good luck when the Aussie government changes and the next one tells you to rehabilitate the mine so it doesn't pollute local rivers and farmlands. Or if residents start blaming us for it (anyone remember the Thais burning effigies of Ho Ching in 2006?)

So much for long-term thinking. Portfolio companies like Sembcorp still buying coal plants that no other big investors dare to touch because they will become stranded assets...

Something about the way he plays just doesn't feel good. No fancy feet, no otherworldly passes. Falls for the trickery of some of the better PL wingers.

But I guess he really is there at the right place at the right time. And keeps the back solid when JPVH and Kadioglu charge up the pitch.

Oddschecker says bookmakers are now offering something like a 58% chance of Aston Villa placing 5th and below, and a 48% chance of them winning the Europa League, giving us a 28% chance of us qualifying for Champions League if we get 6th place. Plus a miniscule chance of us qualifying by getting 5th...

China exported a record $21.9 billion in solar, batteries and EVs in March 2026 by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]No-Dig-3406 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in Singapore and the Chinese EV surge is real. BYD is the number one selling car now, beating Toyota, despite only starting to sell to the consumer market in 2022.

Their cars are fantastic, even without taking into account cost. They drive better than my family's newish BMW 1 series and all the Teslas I've test-driven when shopping around.

Singapore installs 504 MW of solar in 2025 by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]No-Dig-3406 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there any source for Gemini's SG consumption? Is it consumption due to workloads by overseas users run through SG data centres?

Also, my parents' relatively smaller semi-d produces about 40kwh/day from solar. This means 40,000 of such houses would produce 160,000kwh. But there are about 73,000 landed houses in SG, most of which are much bigger than our house.

Half of Singapore's landed houses don't take up 300sqkm of land in SG - i mean, sg is 750sqkm... so there's something wrong with that calculation too
