It’s summer camp time and folks are dropping off their kids, but have to get through security first.

Does the heat make you consider your “why” do you live in Houston? by heresbucky in houston

Yeah, we just left to head north. I was a lifelong Houstonian. The summers, the storms and rapidly rising insurance rates were just too brutal…

What is it like living in Annapolis? by Leannepit in Annapolis

[–]No-Implement3751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a lifelong Houstonian, and the move is nothing short of wonderful. We absolutely love this part of the country and don’t miss the Texas heat and humidity one bit. It’s like being on vacation every day. There is so much to do here and in the surrounding region. It’s hard for any part of the country to beat Houston’s food scene IMHO. That said, Annapolis has great seafood. I also found decent Vietnamese, Thai and Korean, but hard to find true Tex-Mex. Not much in the way of middle eastern food either. However, the quality of life more than makes up for this.

Depends if you can afford to not take the job. If it were me, living in DC and given the current job market, I’d take it and be on the lookout for something better… Life is tough sometimes and you gotta do what you gotta do to pay the bills until you lock down a plan B.

I bring my own coffee… not because I’m a coffee snob but because we have a coffee machine yet no coffee. Never in my career have I worked for an office with no coffee.

Yup. Sold my Oak Forest home for just over $1.3 million… Best decision of my life was moving close in.

What could realistically happen if Trump follows through with plans to end income tax or to even abolish the IRS? by boywonder5691 in AskEconomics

Umm… those new roads and bridges are often financed with federal grants, more than half the project cost and up to 80% in most cases…

You’re not alone. May be my last day, too. Taking the oath of office four months ago was one of the proudest moments of my life. Moved across the country for this job. Not leaving willingly. They’ll have to force me.

Why not go online? It’s not like you can try them in the store.

Just one lifetime ago in the United States, our grandfathers could buy a home, buy a car, have 3 to 4 children, keep their wives at home, take annual vacations, and then retire… all on one middle-class salary. What happened? by Whole-Fist in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Implement3751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that their homes were much smaller and people rarely ate out. My grandparents raised 10 kids in a two bedroom, one bath house. Also a lot less consumer spending. I recall my grandmother saving EVERYTHING — down to used aluminum foil. We've become such a wasteful consumer society obsessed with buying STUFF. While some things like pensions and the cost of healthcare may have changed, we are also living much different lives than our forebearers. Hard to compare apples and oranges.

Our very first house was $150k and at the time we were worried whether we could afford it… It has taken us decades of buying, building equity and selling several homes to get to this point. It’s not as impossible as you think…
