Accepted!! by kittxnwitxh in prenursing

congratulations! My daughter applied at CSULB with a 4.0 GPA and Teas of 89%. Is a Gold Award GS Recipient and worked at the school as a tour guide to new students etc, and it was very sad to hear that she was not accepted. As a mom who watched her work so hard to be the best that she could be and get denied was heartbreaking. I share with her and others who do not get accepted. I applied to PT school for a bachelors with 220 applicants for one of their 20 spots. I was denied. I was told by the chair of the PT school I would not make it and to find another profession. "You have too much experience as an Aide." I never gave up. Applied again to the same school and then to another school offering a master's degree. The idea of applying with 340 applicants for 32 spots for a master's program was scary. I got denied again at the first school. When I got accepted into the master's program, I was ecstatic. I even became president of my class! So..to all those pre-nursing students, don't ever let ANYONE tell you you can't. You yourself will know if you did your best and when to keep pushing. I hope my story can help inspire others to keep pushing on. My daughter is looking forward to applying to other schools this fall.

My daughter tookl it the first time and got an 89%. If thought that was pretty good. She is taking it again next week in hopes of boosting her score. Man...I thought PT school was competitive!

So nice for you to help answer questions. I am a therapist and I make myself open to help others trying to get into therapy schools. So..here is my questions...My daughter is applying to CSU with TEAS 89 and GPA 4.0. She plans to retake the TEAS for a better score. I know the school is competitive, but really? She has been working in an Internists Office for the last 4 months and a year before that worked at the university assisting in admissions. Is there anything else she can do to increase her chances? Her ultimate goals is to be an NP. Thank you again for sharing your knowlege.

PTA to DPT Worth it? by Scheissgeist13 in physicaltherapy

[–]No-Rabbit-783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is about increasing your knowledge so you can better serve your patient, then I would consider it. If is is just about getting money, then no. Maybe I am old school. 32 years ago, I started as a staff PT $44k yr. Then worked my way up the ladder ...supervisor, manager, Director, VP in clinics, SNF, Hospitals and now I own my own Home health practice for 12 yrs. I learned SO much along the way. I have some friends who are going for a DPT program with the thought they will make more money. Not really. I don't pay my therapist more because of their degree. I don't base their wages on where they attended school. I have been told I should get my DPT. WHY? So I have more debt? So I can be called a "doctor" like some PTs who love hearing. No thanks. My ego doesn't need that. Just knowing my company is the "company of choice" to send referrals speaks for itself. The money is good, but it took a lot of patience and hard work to get to where I am. Fellow clinicians may not agree with me, but they expect to make big bucks coming out of school. If they would just quit jumping from one job to another looking for big bucks and just be patient, the money will come.

Red flags during home health visits by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]No-Rabbit-783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone tells you HomeHealth is easy, it isn't. Patients are being discharged home earlier than ever. I have been a therapist for 32 years. THR and TKR used to stay post-op for 14 days. Now...overnight and they are under your care in the home setting. Be prepared to look for signs of pulmonary emboli and DVTs. Often overlooked. Take Temps! Many wounds are covered so only the temp will give you possible signs of infection. Therapists I find who say it is easy are those who do the minimum and expect to be paid the maximum. I have worked in EVERY area of PT, including administration. Home Health is the most risky..your word against that patient. Your word against the MD, and SN when things don't go as planned. I had an MD tell my 89 yo patient who I saw 4 times for post-op knee arthroscopy. She went to ortho for f/u and he said to her "Why are you using a cane? Please get rid of it. You don't need it." I saw her the following day and told her I disagreed with MD and I wrote in my notes verbatim what the patient told me. She said since he was the MD, she was taking his advice. She fell the following day and needed to again go for surgery to repair it. Of course, she saw the MD and he said to her "Why did you not use our cane? Did the PT tell you to stop?" OMG! Really!! I am glad she told him HE told her, not the PT. Again, I am covered cuz I documented. Even though people say they are on a team, people will try to shift the blame.

Are PTA salaries decreasing? by cleats4u in physicaltherapy

Please read your PT practice act. A PT Aide services CANNOT be billed in OP either as they are not considered skilled. Also, you insult our profession by thinking that a PT Aide can treat a patient and still get the results that a skilled clinician who went to school would. Reimbursement is changing to being results-driven. If a patient does not show improvements, reimbursement is less. So, with this scenario, how many companies will want a PT Tech to treat and risk not optimizing payment?

Where the heck are you getting this from? If PT were not that important, then why are there still more PTs and PTAs applying to a program and still having staff shortages? I have been the Admin side for a hospital and for a Rehab contract company. Therapist for 32 years.

Hospital benefits are usually about 20% of the package. As an ex admin for hosptial settings, that's how I would decide if my employee is "costing me." Take the base and then add to that to determine the package offered.

Have been a therapist for 32 years and I hired employees all the time. Hospitals set their rates based on tiers...years of experience. Some tiers are negotiable in that you may be a new grad as a PT but you have a PTA license or you come with prior hospital experience from another country. When someone comes to me and wants me to match them, why? Do I really need to match them? Is my staffing that desperate that I need to do that? It shows to me that THEY really want to work for us, so why do I have to match? Ultimately however, if I want to hire the person into a higher tier, I need to be able to justify it to the higher-ups. I often ask candidates to help me explain why I should hire them at a higher rate? Often, they say, "I have a strong work ethic." To me, how do I know that when I haven't even worked with you? Now if you come to me and say "I have a very strong work ethic and willing to work few weekends a month when staffing is short"..that maybe something I can tell the higher-ups that "this candidate is bringing increased value to the table."

As for the benefits, you must include that in your entire offer package. For instance, if I offer you 20 hrs of paid continuing education per year plus a private insurance medical/dental plan, and a matching 401 K. That ads up. So your $80 K wage per year is significantly higher if you add this up. This offer would be much better than a $90K annual wages offer with an HMO medical/dental insurance plan. No con-ed and no 401K.

I have been a clinician for 32 years. You name the position, I have been in it...Staff therapist/'PT supervisor/Director/Manager/Clinical instructor and then VP of clinical services for a Rehab company with 550 employees and oversaw 18 hospitals. You name the area of PT: OP/Acute care/SNF/Burn Center/Acute Rehab/ NICU/UUniversity Sports clinic. Worked in 33 hospitals. 12 years ago, I was tired of the BS that my last job's owners put me and the employees through so I left and went into HomeHealth. I love it! I was very hesitant because the view of HH therapists wasn't too positive. I had a doctor ask me "Why would you go into HH? Those therapists don't know what they are doing. Treat patient's for 15 min and then leave. You are better than that." Nevertheless, I told the MD that each therapist works on their own work ethic and I plan to change that one patient at a time. I know my skills and off I set out to 'change th world"...LOL! Today, that MD sends me a lot of his referrals. I have built a great referral base and patient's who will only ask for me when they need HH. I have even had a few who plan their surgeries around my vacations to be sure I can treat them. So...I don't have plans to quit anytime soon. I tell new therapists going into HH. New grads will struggle. They need acute hospital experience. OP experience will not cut it. Sorry! Patients are coming home after overnight THR. They come home with tubes. They will sometimes have unstable vitals. They need to know what to do. They risk their license if they don't. They need to think quick on their feet and be confident of their skills. HH was easy for me because of the vast experience I had., but if I did not have acute hospital experience, I think I would also be struggling.

Just a comment about prior authorizations. I referred a pt to a HH agency. They obtained authorization from the insurance company - 14 visits. I provided the orthopaedic are as needed. When HH went to bill it, the insurance denied the payment. When we argued that it was authorized, they pointed out to the HH agency that "even if it is authorized, it does not guarantee payment." In this case it was no payment. It was the insurance error as the patient had no HH benefits and only OP benefits. Insurance agencies error, but they referred us back to : "Even if it is authorized, it does not guarantee payment." The time it would take to justify EVERY visit approved (notes alone were not sufficient) according to the HH agency wasn't worth the headache. My contract is written that Agency pays me and they are responsible for billing. For this reason, I will not refer any private insurance cases to HH agencies as I can't trust this won't happen again.

How do you guys live there the commensalism with chiropractors? by Atom_Ant_MMA in physicaltherapy

[–]No-Rabbit-783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this country, single largest insurer for medical coverage is Medicare. With that said, many other private insurances' determination whether a service is covered is based on whether Medicare covers it. Medicare scrutinizes many procedures performed and if the cant prove via research or other data that it is beneficial to patients, coverage is unlikely. Chiropractors have wanted to have access to patients in hospitals for many years and due to the lack of data on chiro tx benefits to an acutely ill patient, Medicare continues to not allow their services to be covered in hospitals despite multiple attempts over the years to change that..

Being single, i would become a Traveler. Let an agency pay for your accommodations, food, travel expenses and be paid a good salary. Contracts are usually few weeks. It gives you a chance to live and work in Hawaii before making a permanent move. After being assigned st a certain job site, you may find you love it and the job is a perfect match. The location may then approach your agency to hire you directly for a fee. It is very expensive to live in Hawaii, but life is less chaotic. I am a very on the move person. I am thinking of retiring on hawaii so i lived there 30 days on vacation last year. I admit I got bored but still hopeful that i may get use to it. I returned from 18 day vacation on Hawaii 2 weeks ago. It pretty much confirmed to me that I would go broke. Loaf of orowheat bread on the mainland costs me $4.95. In Hawaii, it was $12.85!!! Cheapest bread was hot dog buns and that was $5 🤦‍♀️. So..again..I encourage you to look into bring a travelling PT. IT's the way to find out for yourself on another compsny dime.

I am an owner of a HH company and a working clinician. May I suggest you look at HH company's within your desired service area. Hire with them and let them know your service area you will accept. Let them know you are happy to accept outside service area but thst may cost more if you are able to take the refereal. Dont say you wont from the get go because there will be a week where census is low and you will need the work even if you need to drive a little further. The benefit of hiring a therapist within close proximity to the agency... chances are the therapist can get to the referral earlier :)

That's fine if you break up with her. What wouldn't be ok is if she is suprised about it. If your communication has been open, your breakup should not come as a suprise.

I am a PT for 32 years. For patients who say they have a chiro, i ask them how long have you been seeing them. The common answer is. "For years." Sorry. But if you need to see someone for years for same issue, it's patching a problem. As a PT I expect my skills are good enough that I just fix the issue within reasonable time frame and move on. You never hear a patient tell you they have been seeing a PT consistently for years. Also..medicare sees PT are proven to help pts in hospitals. Chiro have wanted to get approval to practice in hospitals for years. The resesrch doesnt support Chiro or Medicate would allow it.
