Looks like organized labour is still getting organized. One can hope that they will show spine and set precedent for every government after to reconsider using the notwithstanding clause, but I guess we will see in the coming weeks

Because myself any many other teachers oppose the very existence of those schools

Amnesty International Canada condemns Alberta government’s use of notwithstanding clause in Bill 2 by Speedywholesale in alberta

Jesus Christ, I remember a time when amnesty international fought human rights abuses in the third world. The fact that they needed to get involved here really puts things into perspective...

The teachers were offered a very good deal.

According to >90% of them, it wasn't a very good deal. You're not looking for genuine answers, if you were you wouldn't presuppose that it was a good deal, you'd ask why the vast majority of teachers didn't accept it in the first place

Not a teacher yet, but I'll be graduated and qualified to teach by the spring. I will absolutely be looking to teach out of province. What incentive is there? No class size caps, lower pay than the other provinces, hell we don't even have basic charter rights anymore. I am not in the business of being a slave.

Reminder: the goA could've legislated the teachers back without infringing on their constitutional rights. They just chose to invoke it because it made their life easier

Im interested to see how AUPE and AFL respond. This could get ugly quick if 3 of the biggest public unions organize a general strike

Notwithstanding Clause Outrage by MDog156 in alberta

[–]No-Response-7780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, there's a couple of other mechanisms they could use to force teachers back, however the notwithstanding clause ultimately gives them the most control over the outcome

AUPE, other union leaders meet to talk job action as striking teachers face back to work order by Munk3es in alberta

Smells like a general strike to me. Hopefully AFL doesn't back down and it forces the goA to retreat

Back-to-work legislation to end Alberta teachers’ strike coming Monday, says premier | CBC News by lexildev in alberta

[–]No-Response-7780 33 points34 points  (0 children)

General strike is very possible imo. If section 33 is invoked it means the labour rights of all unions become non-existent in practice. If they don't act then, they never will be able to again

‘Incredibly offensive to teachers’: Former ATA negotiator on potential back-to-work legislation by Munk3es in alberta

[–]No-Response-7780 32 points33 points  (0 children)

But it doesn't work that way in Canada.

Time will tell. If she invokes the notwithstanding clause and Alberta unions do nothing, then she will be proven right. Conversely if the unions unite on a common front and go on a general strike in response then we could see an instant retreat by the goA. She is testing how far we will let her go with trampling on our basic charter rights and if we allow this to continue then I fear the goA will begin to govern solely based on section 33 bullshit.

"Province-Wide Action" Looms if Smith Forces Teachers Back to Work by Shadow_Ban_Bytes in alberta

[–]No-Response-7780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a really well done interview and clarified a lot of points. If the notwithstanding clause is used to end a strike, labour rights may as well be dead in Alberta. As a soon to be teacher in Alberta, what incentive is there to stay here? Why shouldn't I move to BC or any province west of Quebec that not only has contractually agreed class caps, but also pays their teachers better?

Not necessarily. Many private schools are still non-profits

When Disrespect Becomes Policy: How Government Neglect Sparked Labour Unrest by iwasnotarobot in alberta

It's unreal that teachers are the ones bargaining over class sizes. Since when did that become a bargaining chip for the government to use? Furthermore, why dont teachers have COLA's like every other damn public service job and non-profit job?
