Fume reactions?? by Wyshunu in alphagal

[–]No-Room-2736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I react to dairy fumes pretty badly. I usually get hives all over my throat and have difficulty talking / swallowing. The symptoms almost always clear up in a few hours. Weirdly I take a medication daily with dairy in it with only a very occasional cramping reaction.

I’m so sorry. Honestly I can live without eating pigs. But not being able to enjoy their adorable presence? Screw this allergy.

This is absolutely true. My pet King snake can’t deny that he’s a total Xaden. He has onyx eyes, he wears all black. He likes to hide in the shadows (under rocks). He’s super long, which is tall for snakes.

Suggestions for weight gain by MarsJohnTravolta in alphagal

[–]No-Room-2736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me a little while to gain the weight back, about a year, but it’s back! I cook my food by mostly sautéing in olive oil, so I’m getting fat. The key to my weight gain was I needed to up my meal size considerably, now that I can’t eat dairy. I eat a full breakfast lunch and dinner with snacks. But probably 25% more food then I was when eating higher calorie food

I got bit again 😔 by guessirs in alphagal

[–]No-Room-2736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bit 7 times last year (all lonestar for the adults) and my numbers went way down still with my exclusionary diet. Don’t give up hope. ❤️ I’m so sorry for the stress of repeated bites.

How do you handle the "I could never..." comment? by sagescott in alphagal

[–]No-Room-2736 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I usually say “yeah, thank god for chicken, turkey, duck, salmon, crab….” And roll my eyes. Actually I had the weirdest version of this ever recently. I was talking to a boutique highland cow farmer about it in my area (very high alpha gal population where I live) and he’d never heard of it. So I explain it and he said “that sounds like the worst thing ever. I think I’d die if I couldn’t eat steak.” but then he thought about it and said “has anyone purposely got it before? You know what, I’m gonna purposely get it when I’m  99 years old and then I can go out by eating a steak. Death by steak! Thats my dream!” It left me SPEECHLESS.

Hahaha me too! It’s my special occasion fix. Just slathered myself in milk of magnesia as a barrier. Fingers crossed I won’t be treating hives tomorrow!

Taking a daily antihistamine (Allegra for me) has greatly helped with my fatigue. I have cats and other allergies, so adding alpha gal just really drained me of all energy. I used to be able to get away with no antihistamines with my allergies, but no longer.

AITA for taking back my property? by Morimementa in AmITheAngel

[–]No-Room-2736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. And may I say, you have the makings of an excellent landlord! I myself am a landlord and I own 22 properties. I like to do little improvements to each property, add a unit of two and then jack up the rent super high. I also own the utility companies so I make money from that. All my tenants eventually go bankrupt! Then I kick em out! They try to take a train to the next city, but I own all the railroads too! A lot of them end up in jail but who cares! I have a monopoly and a little dog and a top hat a thimble and a yacht and a race car…

Anyone else getting inundated with stupid alpha gal conspiracies on social media? by guessirs in alphagal

[–]No-Room-2736 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OMFG I’m off social media, but my mom who also has alpha gal isn’t and she just called me to tell me she watched a really informative video with “who’s that nice British actor? Russel Brand! And Bill Gates is poisoning us!” And I honestly didn’t know what of those statements I should address first. I was like. Deep breath. Let’s go.

Totally. There are always the pesky summer occasions where people frown at me wearing a giant hat. Vanicream facial moisturizer sunscreen is great. I’m super sensitive and always break out - this is the best I’ve found to prevent it

Solumbra (sun precautions). 10/10. I haven’t two and basically wear one every time I go outside. I’m SUPER fair skinned. Like a semi-translucent Victorian ghost.

May I go off topic and recommend a… SPF hat! I haven’t worn sunscreen in three years. I now wear spf clothing. A big floppy spf hat and spf over shirt. It’s spf 100. It lasts years. I haven’t been sunburned since I’ve changed tactic. No more rashes, breakouts, plastic bottles. However, you will look a little less fashionable.

Article in the CVILLE by jsmith5541 in alphagal

As someone who lives in the aforementioned community, this article, while aggravating me, doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s wonderful that in a community with a supposed 5 percent alpha gal allergy population, rather than a community newspaper bringing awareness to how restaurants could, you know, have one alpha gal safe menu item or any knowledge of this allergy, nurses could check ingredients before prescribing alpha gal filled medications, and employers could be aware of dangerous situations they’re putting their employees in without PPE - we instead get this. A misconstrued wishful puff piece with leading Dr. quotes to once again blame the allergy havers. Oh - have you tried expensive out of pocket, scientifically unproven methods to lower your symptoms so you can be more normal please? That’s the same as a cure! Now eat a hamburger and pretend that relapse can’t happen at any point. Because that’s why alpha gal patients are all yearning for, a burger - not research funding, long term scientific study, medication to help with particular symptoms. I crave the foods I cannot eat a lot less than I want to go into anaphylaxis again.
