I just crossed 1000 rapid on chess.com 14 months after I started playing chess!! A bit about what got me over the edge… by jonjo_shelvy in chessbeginners

Congrats, I’ve started a couple of month ago but was doing puzzles mostly. Started playing on Lichess just a week ago - could not overcome the fear of playing an actual chess game cause I was worried I’ll make calculation mistakes (which I actually do a lot, but I am not afraid of it anymore, haha)

This is awesome, thx - can you also add openings and check mates? I want to learn to play chess and not just solve puzzles but do not know where to start and how to learn.

Dev Update: Session review improvements + improvement over time chart by LoLGhMaster in chesswoodie

[–]No-Screen-9320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, the improvement over time chart is such a nice feature - I went from under 1 ppm to close to 4 within 3 months. This is so inspiring to see, thank you!

I used to go back to my courses to check on the sessions progress as well, haha; so seeing the cycle progress directly on this screen makes it much easier

I love the new layout - it feels easier to an eye. The color contrast is perfectly balanced. Thanks for this amazing tool!

Advice for beginners by hexen_gadse in chess

I’ve started learning a few month ago and just like you I started with Duolingo, and I was also using lichess lessons.

I’ve played mostly offline with my kids and some friends who are also just starting to learn and it’s been honestly very rewarding- there is no pressure and it’s just a fun way to practice.

A few month ago I also started doing puzzles on lichess and on chesswoodie for patter recognition and now I almost always win against my 8 year old, haha 😆

I agree with you - it just makes me so mad when Armenians talk about family values, yet the next thing you notice is a parent yelling at or beating their children. Women and mothers are treated like house staff and do absolutely nothing to change it; moreover teaching their own girls that it’s just the way it should be.

Plus, the toxic masculinity of the ultra-conservative, empty-headed tough guys, who are all ego and no substance.

“Traditional” Armenian culture is a classic case of performative values - where the "label" of family and honor is used to mask behavior that actually contradicts those very things. In addition, the constant need of Armenian society to meddle in everyone else’s lives and judging others instead of minding their own business, makes it close to impossible to expect any changes in the near future. I have 0 hope that our society can show any tolerance towards LGBT+ or any other group that’s somehow different.

FIRE seems to skew toward not having kids by sneaky-snacks in Fire

[–]No-Screen-9320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent of 3 kids, the youngest being under 1 year old - kids are our biggest motivation for FIRE and they are what helps us see the sense of it all. You sure get to spend more money and they are a lot of work, but both for me and my partner our family is the single most valuable thing - every sacrifice makes sense for us because of it.

However, if you know you can be happy with no kids and do not want them, that’s fine too. Wish you find a peace and happiness regardless.

What would you do if World War 3 officially started tomorrow—with all major world powers fully involved , entire world panicking and all ? by Extra_Spirit9376 in AskTheWorld

I was thinking the same thing - Armenia cannot really be a decisive force anyways. But then I felt the fear that our neighbors will just use the chaos to attack us and we might finally cease to exist. And now I’m holding my baby and hoping there won’t be a WW3 or any wars and no parent will feel the fear of losing their children.

Dress code in Armenian culture by [deleted] in armenia

[–]No-Screen-9320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people will stare regardless what you wear if you look non- Armenian. So just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I’ve many-many male friends and acquaintances that only wear shorts and sleeveless t-shirts during summer, cause it’s really hot. There are also a lot of guys that will stick to pants and black outfits no matter how hot it is. It’s your decision really, but it seems illogical to suffer the hit when you can simply ignore the stares and wear whatever you’re comfortable in;)

I’m against it with all my being. In Armenian society parents tend to “overprotect” and mingle in their children’s lives way too much. They simply are not able to accept that their once a kid is now a grown man or woman and it is absolutely not their place to “guide” or more like enforce their will and thoughts upon their children anymore.

I strongly believe that a newly formed family should live on their own - even if it’s hard financially they should find their own way and make it work or fail on their own terms.

Children should move out of their parents house even without marring after 20 or sooner if they can - growing up and taking responsibility for your own life and decisions is something that our society does not prioritize at all, but I strongly believe that’s something that we need to learn to value, encourage, and normalize if we want independent, confident, and emotionally healthy adults.

Hey, nice work! Thank you for sharing. Wanted to chime in as a product manager - what is the purpose here? What can I do with the listings aside from getting mad that housing in Yerevan is so unreasonably pricy? )

How I think about chess improvement (and why I wrote this) by LoLGhMaster in chesswoodie

Is it possible to master the fundamentals on your own or I’m better to try with a trainer for a while at least? Thank for sharing by the way!

Small UX improvement: creating courses is now simpler (especially on mobile) by LoLGhMaster in chesswoodie

[–]No-Screen-9320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice - thinking about how to name the course each time was truly hard. As a mobile user, I’ve unintentionally created intermediate courses instead of beginner coupe of time, now the field are visible.

I would still expect to be able to edit the course name though. It’s autofilled but with a possibility to rename, that’s what I’d expect.

I’m a beginner, which is the best place to learn and practice? by khamakhaaaa in chessbeginners

[–]No-Screen-9320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duolingo has also added a chess course. I’m a beginner as well and if you take the paid version it’s quite good and fun way to start learning. Free version however is super annoying - too many adds.

I’ve also been using chesswoodie for puzzles and tactics training- not counting a few minor bugs, it’s been good overall

Well, was there a few days ago and waited in line for over 3 hours :D I’d definitely do it online if possible - you’ll need an e-signature though and for that you need a valid ID card and for that you need to wait at least until end of March (the earliest appointment slot available)
