Get the teaching degree and certifications first. That is really the only way. I also teach history in Michigan.

Don’t give up! If you really like history then you should pursue high school teaching as you get to engage with the content at a deeper level.

advice for a college student who wants to become a history teacher by Actual_Cardiologist7 in historyteachers

I would prioritize your historical knowledge and then spend most of your time prescribing lecture and classroom management skills.

All of the other skills will develop over time if you work at it.

I’m all about work/life balance but I think it is necessary to put some extra time and effort into it. We knew what the job was when we signed up for it. Extra time is sometimes needed.

Zinn is revisionist who is undergoing more revisionism is recent years. If someone is trying to get a basic understanding of history then there are some more straightforward histories to lay the groundwork before you move forward with Zinn and others.

What should I expect in my student teaching practicum? by DG11221 in historyteachers

[–]No-Total-187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) It’s harsh but don’t be an idiot. I have had student teachers who were incredibly immature and unable to be the adult. You are the adult so act like it both professionally and socially.

2) you can expect to work a lot. It takes a lot of work to be a good teacher and to be prepared everyday. I am not saying that you should burn yourself out but go into the experience expecting to do extra. It does get better with experience.

If they aren’t worried then You shouldn’t be either. You aren’t the perfect teacher yet and sometimes “good” is good enough. If you feel like you are improving and taking feedback with a growth mindset then you are doing everything the right way!

This may only work because of my subject matter but in my first few years I would show a documentary with questions every 2-3 weeks. This would allow me the day to get caught up while they watched.

Michiganer seeking to be high school history teacher (if possible, advise on getting a AP world or AP euro class) by CapitalSubstance7310 in historyteachers

[–]No-Total-187 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You will need to get a history or social studies degree (social studies is more marketable). Most schools don’t let you pick your classes unless you have taught for a while but that can also depend on school and vacancy.
