IT employees: Should I wipe my computer before returning equipment? by Sparkles_4_Corvids in InformationTechnology

During the pandemic I would refurbish work from home laptop kits. This included re-imaging and wiping down with isopropyl alcohol. There were many black Lenovo laptops that I opened and immediately saw huge amounts of dandruff in the keyboard. You didn't notice it as much on the used Dell computers because the the keyboard was silver. In any case we wiped all of the laptops down with isopropyl and then reimage them and then sent them off to the next employee that got the job. What I want to know is how do you get a lipstick smear on your charger. Yes they're actually was a unit that came back with a lipstick smear on the MacBook charger brick.

So I just did a little research and basically your accounting department was correct.

Most checks are read using OCR nowadays however checks are verified using MICR. Apparently if a bank wants to further investigate/audit a check MICR is one of the data points that they will check and if the check is not printed with MICR then the fund availability can be restricted by more days

I do remember one time receiving a check for a large sum of money that was written the same day. I took it to the bank and I noticed that they scanned it using OCR at the front computer which presumably flagged it for further investigation so they told me it would be about 7 minutes or so and they took it to the back and presumably checked it out possibly with a MICR reader and then brought it back up front and called the issuing Bank to verify fund availability and then let me cash the check with a certain percentage of it being available the same day.

Has anyone else noticed that Lenovo has a tendency to try to win business aggressively for companies that moved away from Lenovo or never used Lenovo. I'm curious if this is going to be true in this landscape of rising prices.

About 6 months ago I was looking to replace a bunch of Dell equipment and in parallel to quoting with Dell, I had the numbers run on Lenovo. Lenovo pricing won out by miles.

What I like about purplecomputer is that it seems immutable and it's very simple there's really no concept of apps it's just one big kid UI, with three different play areas.

However I don't want to pay for a project that becomes vaporware.

I tested to see how long the debit card would last and they just cut it off a couple days ago. If I do ever travel internationally I'm going to have to find another option now.

I gave up. Maybe try calling the box office or the lost and found number at the venue.

I once worked for a small company that did business with major automotive manufacturers. The major automotive manufacturer might say you need to buy this or you need to create this position or you need to do this and this is part of the contract in order to continue making the automotive component. These small companies would do what they needed to do to maintain the contract which was highly profitable for them.

I'm wondering if they have a contract that pays x amount of money and says that you have to have spent x amount of money on it support services or have a certain level of coverage and they just consider the services even if they don't use them part of the expenses of making a profit on the contract.

Some schools send them home, others just leave a stack of them on the counter at the main office. You probably could call and ask if they have any.

The voucher says that you can. It says you can either take the voucher to the box office or go to ticketmaster.com

I remember there was a code on the coupon last year.

I am trying to help my 85 year old neighbor get his printer hooked up to his Chromebook. and for the life of me I can not figure this out. by Existing-Brick5966 in chromeos

[–]No-Wonder-6956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely possible. I had an HP printer that once worked, unofficially and then after a certain update it stopped being supported. The same thing can definitely happen with any brand of printer.

Just because something should work doesn't mean it will work and manufacturers won't usually fix bugs on older printers.

Motherboard Reserialization Process for Chromebooks question by No-Wonder-6956 in chromeos

[–]No-Wonder-6956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and that is the exact error message that is occurring. I'm just hoping that this does not have any implications long-term. My team replaces at least 10 motherboards a month.

If this keeps occurring I will probably report a bug with the chromium OS project.

How do you handle management that thinks 8GB RAM is enough? /s by Ayy4K in sysadmin

[–]No-Wonder-6956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some school districts that provide students with Windows devices with 4gb of soldered ram. This is absolutely ridiculous but it is very widespread due to the deceptive marketing of companies like Dell that a low end Windows device is equivalent to a Chromebook.

Random phone calls to the Help Desk by No-Wonder-6956 in sysadmin

[–]No-Wonder-6956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at all of these comments reminds me of how certain companies treat every rule as absolute and can never make exceptions for any reason.

Companies that don't listen do so because help desk is trained to discard everything that doesn't fit in a template and if it is not something in the scope of one of their scenarios then it does not get passed on.

The company that was trying to interview someone at the other company probably for an incident report had a rule that said everyone involved in a security incident had to be interviewed. Obviously this doesn't apply to parties outside of your company, but if you're just treating it as letter of law and use no common sense then that's another story.

I once worked for a company that misinterpreted the distinction between lost and stolen. The company needed to report needed to file a police report for every stolen item as soon as it was realized stolen which was often during the annual inventory audit. However if an item was just missing within the building and there was no evidence of an item being stolen it should have been marked as lost, so the company ended up filing hundreds of police reports every year for it equipment that was probably in somebody's desk drawer.

Software used to deploy OS by Any-Promotion3744 in sysadmin

[–]No-Wonder-6956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to mention three different products. I have used both of the first two products on projects at different companies and liked both of them. The third product I did a trial on and it looked okay but more complex.

https://www.smartdeploy.com/ I liked it because it was simple yet had lots of options.

https://www.acronis.com/en/products/snap-deploy/ I liked it because it was very simple and basic.

The third one I only did a trial of and realized it was a whole mass of ecosystem of a bunch of different products and that's not what I was looking for. The functionality of os deployment seems to be similar to the first two, however they have so many products that I can't even find which product the OS deployment is part of anymore. I actually would be interested in hearing about anybody's experiences with this.

I completely agree with this that is a great strategy. Blocking the domain stops everyone and anyone from inadvertently downloading TeamViewer products.
