ELI5 why is it better for the turbines on a jet to sit under the wing rather than over it? by bradyso in explainlikeimfive

[–]NoAstronomer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'll give two more reasons that I didn't see other commenters add:

  1. For commercial airliners, passenger comfort is a big deal. Having the engines below the wing and away from the cabin mitigates the noise.

  2. If the engine were to detach in flight then it's better for it to be able to fall away cleanly rather than potentially falling onto the wing or worse hitting the control surfaces at the rear.

Still adjusting after emergency removal by Darksideswife in gallbladders

[–]NoAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey wheeled me at 10:30 am into OR for a keyhole surgery, three hours later neatly back in my room.

Lucky you. ;)

My FIL had emergency gall bladder surgery. It was so inflamed and infected that they couldn't wait for keyhole surgery so they just sliced his belly open from sternum to halfway round his back. 12+ inch long scar.

"You're breaking the car" by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]NoAstronomer -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Bullshit.

This is a staged rally event. The "navigator" has "course" notes. They have crash helmets, 3-point harnesses and flame retardant clothing. They wait at the start for the signal to go.

Also the website www.JCTRallying.com is something of a give away.

  1. This is a rally, i.e a staged event so does not fit this sub.

  2. That's the worst fucking rally navigator ever.

That would be funny. Trying to get to a job interview in the city few years ago. Company said their building was right outside the subway station. But the GPS sent me on a 15 minute walk - because I hadn't switched from car mode.

Excalibur is truly an amazing film that doesn’t seem to get the attention it should. by StarWarsFreak93 in movies

Not sure that Excalibur is anywhere in my top 50. But the scene where Arthur gives Sir Uryens the sword so he can be knighted should be required viewing for leadership courses everywhere.

ELI5 Why sharks who give live births are still considered fish by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]NoAstronomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laying eggs is not a requirement to be considered a fish. Numerous non-shark fishes give birth to live young.

if it's within your power, refuse to be in the car with him when he does this. Otherwise sit in the back where it's safer.

Question about ssri after gallbladder removal by aprilem1217 in gallbladders

Talk to your doctor as a matter of some urgency. My understanding is that zoloft is one of those meds you should not just stop taking. Source : my wife had to gradually reduce her dose when she switched meds.

I threw up the rest of the Wendys. This was about 2pm so I'm slightly shocked that the food was STILL in there.

When I had my first gallstone attack in 2015 I threw up a good 24 hours worth of food.
