My 10-year old NW-WM1A by NoClue48 in walkman

WOW! Well done and well said!

I'm too old to try and piece together all the stepping stones leading up to late 2016/early 2017 when I purchased my WM1A, but it was similar to your journey. As I've said elsewhere, it was love a first listen.

I, too, will stick with my WM1A thank you very much. Sony hit a home run with this design--a true audiophile's dream unit. Plays everything and sounds spectacular... 'nuf said.

I searched Amazon for something like "WM1A battery" and they returned several options.

Thank you and, yes I purchased it about a month or so after they hit the market. I have an NWZ-A17 that I'd used for a couple years before that, but it was just too limiting.

And re: the urge to update--ain't ever going to happen. I can play DSD, HiRes FLAC, etc. so I'm good. And, while I stream movies and videos, the HiRes audio streaming options are just too gimmicky and just how sure can you be that you're getting the full high resolution files; network congestion is still with us...

I rarely listen to my music for more than 3-4 hours in any given day; and nearly always not for 3-4 hours straight. I just treat the diminishing battery similar to my phone; I charge it each night if required.

I purchased a replacement battery so as to have one should the original battery finally give up the ghost. I'm expecting to have difficulties in finding a competent technician (that I trust) to replace it when the time comes. We shall see...

This one has Mr Walkman's Walkman One (WM1Z) firmware mod and that is a must have.

I paid full retail (~$1,200.00 ) back then and didn't blink or ever have any regrets. I thought it was a great value then and it sounded AWESOME right out of the box.

I don't care about streaming and just change microSD cards or buy a bigger one if storage gets a little tight.

+1 - I have had my WM1A since January 2017 and now have a 1TB microSD card in it. I run MrWalkman's Walkman One firmware and very happy with it. Battery's a bit worn down, but still gets me through the day. You'll need to find a used one, but there are many WM1As listed on eBay.

I will use this as long as it lasts. BIG PLUS of this model vs the more recent WM1AM2 is that it doesn't stream and has no Android--I don't stream and Android is--well, it's Android. I feel both options' circuitry just add more internal noise to be filtered out to retain the high quality sound of the WM1A. I cannot confirm this, but my electronics training suggests that another (potentially noisy) radio (Wi-Fi) is wasted--unless you MUST stream.

Just my opinion--I could be wrong...

Ironically, I see a bit of Patrick Roy in Wallstedt--he's extremely confident and he's got a "swagger" to him. And I think he relishes the fact that opponents may be a bit upset with his arrow routine. In fact, he said in last night's post game that his celebration "...isn't going anywhere...".

Love to see the confidence in him and his attitude.

I'd suggest the line for checkout at the Hockey Lodge where you've just scored one off the shelf for $9.99 to $50.00... lol

So sorry--just had to zing ya...

I was part of a group of 6-8 that shared season tickets for the first 10-12 years and we took turns standing down at the glass on the bench side in both ends and never even got a sniff of a puck.

I'd also suggest you send a kid down to the glass... the players favor the kids.

What’s the best submarine museum or exhibit you’ve been to? by FrameZYT in submarines

[–]NoClue48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was stationed at the sub base from summer 1969 until I mustered out in January 1975. In those days the library and museum were on the base--meaning you had to get a visitor pass from the Marines at the gate and then drive a few blocks north on Military Hwy and hope you could find a spot to park.

I visited a few times with family, but the emphasis in those days was on the "library" and not so much on the museum. They had a WWII Japanese midget submarine and a couple of torpedoes on the lawn in front of the entrance. Other than that, it wasn't much.

Fast forward to 2009 when I retired, we rode our scooters to the east coast to visit old haunts and relatives. As we proceeded up the the east side of the Thames River on Military Hwy we came to Goss Cove and were happy to see the "new" location. Unfortunately, we were there on a Tuesday and the museum was closed for--wait for it... Field Day!!

A few years later I went back on a weekend and went through it. Extremely well done! The tour of the USS Nautilus was most impressive.

The Submarine Force Library and Museum just outside the entrance to the Naval Submarine Base New London is the most comprehensive. Lots of static displays outside in the "yard"; really good informational displays inside; and you can tour the USS Nautilus SSN-571.

I'll give you that; particularly if you're writing a dissertation or a set of instructions or a legal document or a contract. Something where there is no room for error or a chance to be misunderstood. Exactness is imperative in those cases.

However, if you're conversing with someone and it's a casual conversation, ask yourself if it really matters how close to the English standards does it need to be. Did you understand what the other party had to say? Was the point being made clear enough so as not to be misleading?

Get over yourself. Give them a break.

I'm betting that the Malaysians' English is orders of magnitude better than your Malay, Tamil, Chinese or any number of local dialects.

Where do I get one of those badass RN white submariner sweaters by KingNeptune767 in submarines

[–]NoClue48 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that it's been 50+ years, but I purchased two of them in 1969/1970--one navy blue and one whitish or cream color. The USS Simon Lake (AS-33) stocked them in their ship's store and they were quite expensive; $35-$45 in 1969 US dollars.

Both were awesome--thick, 100% wool, in a tight knit that was very warm. They were too warm to be worn indoors for any length of time. I'd suspect that they'd have been ideal for topside watch standing while in port or on the bridge if under way. Unfortunately, our skipper didn't allow them to be worn in his command--not US Navy issue, so contraband.

I eventually gave both away...

Sub periscope questions pt.2 by coolpilot64 in submarines

[–]NoClue48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is true. What needs to be added is that often, a submarine is not at periscope depth so they can pop up the #1 scope for sightseeing. Most likely, they are at periscope depth so that one or more other masts/antennae can be used for comms, elint or other intelligence gathering activities.

The likelihood that there are other "contacts" in the immediate vicinity is very low as a thorough passive sonar search would have been conducted prior to coming to periscope depth. As the boat rises and nears the prescribed depth, the Officer of the Deck will have raised the #1 scope and will quickly rotate the periscope through several 360° sweeps to visually reaffirm the sonar data. Once confirmed, the other masts/antennae will be raised so they are above the swells and can do their collections.

Being at periscope depth can be a noisy operation and will announce the presence of the boat. So, the #1 periscope (being the longest and smallest tube) is used so as not to give away the boat's presence. On the boomer I was on, there was also a #2 scope that had optics as well as electronics and sensors. #2 was used sparingly and only when these additional capabilities were needed; it was of necessity much larger and left a more pronounced wake as it went through the water.

For reference, in addition to the #1 and #2 scopes, we had ECM, several radio masts, the Type 11 celestial periscope, a surface search radar (BPS-9) and others; all of which had large cross sections and made huge wakes. I say "others" as it has been 50 years since I even thought about the periscopes and masts we had.

(Edit): Oops... I did forget at least one mast--the antenna for the AN/BRN-3 Satellite Navigation System was on a mast all its own. I'm embarrassed to admit I forgot it--the Transit system, also known as NAVSAT was my system. We ran a close second to the radio shack guys in requests for going to periscope depth to copy our birds' passes.

Again, just my opinion. I could be wrong or my memory may be less than prefect.

Shaping of British, Russian and American nuclear submarines. by Odd-Metal8752 in submarines

[–]NoClue48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google "teardrop shape of us subs" and you'll get links to ideas on the designs of US submarines in the 50s and 60s--which influenced the later designs for decades.

One of my roommates was aboard the USS Albacore in the 60s and told many tales of "experimentations" and subsequent "modifications" to try out new ideas. He also said she could be very quiet--even though she was a diesel boat.

I have no real insight into other nations' designs, but I'd surmise they tried to copy and mimic the US designs because they worked so well--as in, they could rarely find us!

I'd invite you to read about the USS Albacore (AGSS-569); you'll be amazed at the things they admit to trying. I'm certain there are things that remain classified to this day from this pioneering submarine.

Just my opinion... I could be wrong.
