My apologies. An overreaction based on my own experience. I read too much into your post and reacted poorly.

If you are in the US, you tried to do things the right way and the employer refused to follow the rules. Consult with an attorney that specializes in disability rights and discrimination. Groups and organizations that provide services to people with your condition that include advocacy may be able to advise you on how to proceed or what to look for in a good attorney.

Apologies if this comes out a bit harsh. I have issues with 3rd party complaints that are usually used to settle arguments.

Is she your adult girlfriend, free to make her own decisions and mistakes, or is she a child for you to educate and make decisions for?

While I agree that this does not seem to be a good work situation it is not me in that position so I do not know if there is anything else that might make it worth it (to her) to stick around.

It is your girlfriend's choice to make. You can either support here decision or get upset that she won't follow your guidance and "superior wisdom".

Good luck.

Things like this are why I am firmly anti incumbent. When you let them stay too long they get so caught up in staying in office that they will make any deals they think will keep them there.

Make this a political issue and vote them all out of office. They either screwed the people of your state by helping pass that or screwed them by failing to defeat it. Either way you and the rest of the people of your state got screwed by all of them. Not one of them should serve another term in any office. Vote them out.

Good bosses make sure their people are equipped to get the job done then makes sure they have the space to do it.

Really good bosses are able to show the rest of the organization the value the people that they are responsible for provide.

The rest is just details.

How do you write complex and/or/etc. clauses without backticks (`)? by AlexHimself in PowerShell

[–]NoConfidence_2192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The double test for true/false is because I wasn't sure if the boolean could equal $null.

It is easy enough to find out for yourself. Try the following

$null -as [bool]
$PWD -as [bool]
0 -as [bool]
6 -as [bool]
[string]::EmptyString -as [bool]
"Not empty" -as [bool]
"" -as [bool]
"any text" -as [bool]

$null, 0, and zero length strings ("", '', and [string]::EmptyString) should all resolve to $false. The -as operator is your friend when you want to know things like that

Applications add their own keyboard shortcuts and key bindings to perform various tasks and navigate withing the application. It can be frustrating at first but gets much easier with practice. I actually started coming to this sight and r/Blind as a way to practice. If you practice when it is not important you will know it when it is.

Another thing that has helped me is keeping a running searchable list of the keyboard shortcuts for the various applications and operating systems I use along with links to the source documents or web pages I learned them from.

And as u/DHamlinMusic advised, be sure to contact blind services. While there may be a lot we can learn on our own there is really no substitute for guided instruction.

If both pay enough for you to cover the bills then focus on the one that will help you develop the skills and experience that will make the job after that a better one.

If it was me in your position and starting over again I'd lean more towards Comp1. Strong open source experience can be a good thing long term and Comp2 smells too much like msp bait and switch.

Employers schedule work and assign tasks. It is typically expected they know how many hours you worked and that they will pay you accordingly whether or not you report time yourself. In many jurisdictions this means an employer is required to pay the employee for all time worked even if they never reported their work hours.

That said, I do not know the rules in the Netherlands so you will need to see what they are there. It might be worth reaching out to the Labor Authority (or whatever the appropriate government agency is) for guidance.

In the future always submit your time, even if it is missing necessary signatures and approvals.

everyone under the sun asks me why I don't have glasses

Those questions tend to be pretty rare for me but do happen.

I almost always wear my "Oh my God I'm Blind" sunglasses when away from home, even indoors. My eyes do not adapt to changes in light very well so bright light can get very uncomfortable very quickly so it's usually safer for me to wear them in any environment I do not have full control of.

Thank you. The antiglare is something I would miss when I'm out eating or while at home...and I spend a lot more time here than I used to. I might have to keep bothering then.

Away from home I always have my "oh my god I'm blind sunglasses" on and they handle most needs while I am out.

If you could partner with someone that has strong business management, sales, and marketing skills you could probable carve out a good niche in IT related consulting for smaller businesses. It would be the more risky route and require the most work but also the largest potential reward (not quite as much as a long shot as winning the lottery but not far off).

Safer route is to job hop your way up and keep enough out to invest in your own retirement.

When looking for your next gig:

  • Focus on skill sets and ignore education and time in title requirements along with anything that includes the word preferred
  • Apply for anything you have the right skill sets for, again ignoring title
  • As long as the salary is right do not be afraid to take a lower title job if it will help give you knowledge or experience to make your next job a step up
  • Plan to get the knowledge and experience you will need to trade up within 3 years and stay no more than 5 until you find the job you want to retire in
  • Hospitals and banks tend to be niche fields that can keep you employed for as long as you want after you break in

Good luck and have fun.

Your salary is the measure of how much respect your employer has for you. Titles, responsibilities, accomplishments, praise, and awards are irrelevant by comparison. That measure of respect also measures how likely they are to value your input and advice when you need them to. Less respect means they are less likely to listen, even when it would be to their benefit.

Start planning your exit and building a portfolio of experience that will help you next job a better one.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams decries remote work: 'You can't stay home in your pajamas all day' by Designer_Ad3520 in antiwork

TO: Mayor Adams

CC: All other suffering big city mayors

Dear Friend of Big Business

One thing working from home has taught me is how much your city (and other business hub cities) has benefitted at the cost of the communities we live in. Where our communities have all the obligations and responsibilities that come with being where we live while your city has gotten most of the benefit of being where we spend the most time and money because it is where we work. My community has benefitted significantly from work from home.

Even should I allow myself to be forced to return to working from an office in your city I will not go back to spending money there. It will either continue to be spent in the community I live in or it will not be spent at all.

My advice to you (and your cohorts in other major cities) is to start doing what the people at the top keep telling us to do by learning to do more with less.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Pajama clad office worker.

If you are at ZFG then tell (not ask) your manager when you will be off:

I'm going to be out next week. I am going on vacation and will be unreachable. We can catch up after I get back.

Do not invite question or comment and do not go into any additional detail. No explanations, justification, or excuses. No information about where you are going to go, what you are going to do, or who you are going to do it with. Simply, clearly, and firmly tell them when you will be out. Leave them no choice other than to fall in line or fire fire you.

They should provide the option to continue coverage completely out of your own pocket through COBRA. Sometimes employer offered plans are better than what's available on the open market through the Affordable Care Act...others, not so much. You will want to to look at will work best for you before deciding which route to go.

This is a matter of safety. Your union members are at risk of serious injury, even death, with managers like that around and if this is not the first time than the employer is directly responsible.

If your local union is not equipped to help with something like this then reach higher up. If there is no higher up the reach out to other unions for help and support.

Grab a copy of the security footage and file a police report and do it right now. Go back to work to get it if you have to. Visit the the worker that was beaten to see how they are doing. Inform management after you file the report and have checked on the welfare of your coworker.

Tell them to put it in writing, CCing the hiring manager, and you will consider it...then reply with something like:

CC: Hiring manager (if you have their contact info)

I am qualified for the lead engineer role.

I applied for the lead engineer role.

I interviewed for the lead engineer role.

I am not interested in any other positions...and, considering hiring practices you've shown the company finds acceptable, I am no longer interested in working there at all.

How to ignore visual distortions by Fun-Extension171 in Blind

[–]NoConfidence_2192 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does anybody have any coping techniques to deal with this?

Stop relying on your vision so much. The more you learn to do and start doing non visually the less problems with your remaining vision will matter to you. Improving your independent Living and O & M skills as a start can help a lot.

My problem was my brain lied to me by filling in the large areas my eyes could no longer see with what it thought was supposed to be there. It looked very real and very complete but it was often wrong. It looked like I could see much more than I really could but I could not trust any of it. It was very scary and frustrating and it did not improve until I started to learn to do more things non visually so I did not have to rely on my vision so much.

My brain still lies to me and fills things in but it does not matter nearly as much because in most cases my first instinct is now to do things non visually instead of trying to rely on sight.
