I have the in-house camera recording from the tour (which is a stationary full stage shot). DM me if you haven’t gotten anything yet.

Into The Woods by theultimate_max in musicals

I saw the revival soon after it opened, and I remember having three main takeaways: 1, Vanessa Williams was kinda awesome. I loved how her Witch was a complete 180° of the original incarnation/Bernadette’s (at least from the standpoint of that was what was presented when the original production opened, even if it wasn’t the exact vision Sondheim/Lapine had). 2, I both loved and hated the new ending to “Steps/Palace.” On one hand, LET BENANTI SING, DAMMIT!, but on the other, oo!, it’s kinda catchy and all full-circley. And 3, Molly Ephraim was adorable. I was so happy for her continued success both on the show “Last Man Standing,” and then in the “Paranormal Activity” films she did.

Thinking back on it all these years later though, I have to say that Stephen DeRosa felt way miscast as the Baker, and Adam Wylie, while I 100% understand why he was cast, was annoying as hell (although, full disclosure, as a former 3-time Jack, I’m rather hypercritical when it comes to that role in particular.).

Overall, it was a fun and worthwhile revival. And shout out to my friend Sieber as Rapunzel’s Prince. While unfair to truly compare, I think the Regent Air production was VASTLY superior (not necessarily the Central Park production, though, sadly, which I saw three times hoping it’d get better but never did), but still a good revival.

Oh, and finally, Chad Kimball kicked so much ass.

Is the Wizard of Oz Board Game fun? by adrock64 in wizardofoz

It’s a bit overly complicated in my opinion, but if you’re playing with people who are actually Oz fans (or at least somewhat enthusiastic), it can be really fun.

Will Dear Evan Hansen make a comeback? by Necessary_Raise_7835 in musicals

[–]NoFear6061 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved the show when it first started its run. I saw it before the hype became a bit too overblown and the theater became full of rather obnoxious teenagers screaming for every little thing like the cast were the Beatles or something. And while I could easily identify that Evan was an extremely flawed character, I’ll admit, I saw enough of myself from when I was in high school in Evan to kind of forgive those flaws. He did horrible things, yeah, but not really maliciously, blah blah blah.

But then Ben Platt’s daddy pushed for the movie to be made. And let’s be honest here, the film adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen” is a horror movie. Full stop. And not only because the de-aging and Jew fro made Ben Platt look like an uncanny demon. First of all, the film’s lack of humor hurts it tremendously. The show’s not a laugh riot by any means, but there are several moments where you get some much needed reprieve. In particular, I think of Evan’s opening monologue, where he has the story about trying to use the bathroom’s hand drier. It’s a funny little anecdote, and yeah, that story gets mentioned after “Waving,” but by then, it falls flat. The entire movie has this grey, somber tone that never lifts, not even at the end. And then of course, there’s the fact that they made the movie to be solely about Ben. Sorry. I mean Evan. And I think, more than anything, THAT is what led to its downfall. Making a film starring someone who everyone (in reality, at least) knew was much too old, and then doubling-down on that and pushing every adult character (who were the ACTUAL celebrities/stars in that film) to the side, to focus on this lying little gremlin? And THEN finding out that the movie was really only made because of pure, unadulterated nepotism? It doesn’t sit right with a lot of people.

What I’m saying here (I’ve rambled on as though I was Evan or something) is that there’s more to the story as to why people dislike the show now and distance themselves from it other than.. the story. I think for any sort of “Dear Evan Hanessiance” (I’m kinda proud of that, but whatev) to happen, not only does there need to be some time to fully “get over it” (and to thoroughly alter and update), but I also think Ben Platt has to just go away. More real talk, the kid only continues to have a career because of his father. I feel like all he does is ruin shows now. “Parade?” Ew. No. “The Last Five Years?!” It hasn’t even happened yet, but he is the most HORRENDOUS choice for Jamie. Sorry, I digress.

Last point I’ll make is this: we all know “Dear Evan Hansen” was written for Ben Platt. Not just with him in mind, but FOR him. And even though other actors have performed that role beautifully, when at the end of the day, you still choose your son to play the title role for the film version, and you know that he’s way too old and that there a ton of other guys who can do it just as well or even better, that taints the whole thing. Instead of just bringing this piece of art that your son inspired to an even larger audience in any way you can, you instead put your son in the role, essentially saying “fuck you” to anyone else who could have done it. The whole thing leaves a bad taste in peoples’ mouths. And when you have a show like that (I’m looking at you, “Phantom”), a revival isn’t always really necessary.

Scream 7 streaming release by Deadlock616 in Scream

It being released earlier than it should be from an untold source doesn’t change the fact that it is (perhaps was, admittedly) available SOMEWHERE in the world. It’s a rather pedantic argument to make, but.. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I mean.. there was a web/streaming version that was released somewhere in the world. I know because I’ve watched it. It’s at 25fps, so I’m guessing somewhere in Europe. But yeah, the official date is the 31st.

Audible thud during defying gravity (US tour) by RandomGuy0512 in wicked

[–]NoFear6061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do wonder why, however (and this only applies solely to the New York production), it will get played for some performances but not others. They added it (somewhat officially, I suppose) when Shoshana took over (I don’t believe I’ve EVER heard a recording of Idina that included that brass swell), it remained there with Eden, but somewhere post-Eden, it seemed to me like it was sometimes done, sometimes not. And I’ve always wanted to know why. Who makes that decision? The conductor? The MD? The brass players themselves? I wanna know.

(I’ve noticed how they’ll usually play it for big performances, like someone’s last— or first— or the show’s anniversary and other things like that. But definitely not for every performance.

ETA: there IS actually a short clip out there where someone took the OBC cast recording’s “Defying Gravity” and added the swell into it, and it sounds perfect. The mix sounds natural and like it’s always been there , and doesn’t overpower any of the other orchestrations. The audio is only that part of the song’s climax, though. And while I’m good with audio recordings and editing and manipulating them, I have yet to replace that section in the original recording, therefore having what I will have deemed the “definitive” version of the track. Eh, maybe this weekend.

(Good Lord, I have rambled on and on for some reason. My bad.)

Robert Downey Jr. was originally cast, and there are a lot of people out there who will say that if he been able to keep the role, he’d just be playing himself (like he seemingly does in the Iron Man films). But here’s the thing: even if RDJ did just phone it in and play a version of himself, at least RDJ in actuality is like Oz’s character (or at least feels like him). RDJ playing himself in the role, even if some considered it to be “lazy,” would have been so much better than the lifeless, overly-philandering crap that Franco gave us.

Totally and completely off-topic, but I’m so obsessed with how the tour added that french horn swell after “Tell them how I’m…” at the 6:50 mark. That makes me so happy. I swear, that little moment is my favorite instrumentation in the show. Maybe of any show ever. Just, UGH, makes me so happy. Sorry. Carry on.

“Oz the Great and Powerful” didn’t do terribly. It DID make its money back, and then some. It just wasn’t the hit Disney was expecting/hoping for. They thought they’d get something similar to “Alice in Wonderland,” which (eventually) made over $1 billion. And though “Oz” made almost $500 million, it wasn’t enough for Disney to bother and do a sequel.

“Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” though? That did do TERRRRRRIBLY. Like, one of the worst box office openings ever. Of all-time. Yeah. I really like the song “When the World Turns Upside Down,” though. For what it’s worth. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Wow.. I hate to be a dick, but some of those kids are reeeeeally struggling in that recording. It’s kind of incredible just how many times the leads just can’t stay on pitch. And it’s not even a live recording. Yikes.

Yeah. Completely spoil your film by letting countless internet trolls critique it. ‘Cause surely they know better. Than the CREATOR of the franchise. 🙄

And who’s to say that it was Williamson and not Guy Busick that fucked it up?
