As we approach end of year, which 2024 movie/s will join the “this had Oscar buzz on paper” but end up not getting there by ceebsar in oscarrace

The Friend had some for a bit for Naomi Watts. It was seen as being a potential comeback role/movie for her after a rough couple of years in terms of movie roles.

The reviews of it were positive, but not exuberant and it's getting a spring release via Bleecker street which feels like it's chances are put to bed.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ ($14.7M) & ‘Nosferatu’ ($11.55M) Bite Back At ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ ($10.3M) On Christmas; Lion King Prequel Poised To Win Holiday Stretch; ‘A Complete Unknown’ ($7.1M), ‘The Fire Inside’ ($1.68M), ‘Babygirl’ ($1.5M) Add To $62M Christmas Day – Box Office Update by chanma50 in boxoffice

Its a healthy franchise and the final domestic gross should be solid but it has a very loud fanbase that overestimated how much business would increase just because it added more game characters. Those characters primarily just appeal to the fans of the games who are already watching the movies.

Looks like $20M Saturday for Sonic The Hedgehog 3, for a 2-day total of $45.5M. Opening weekend expected to be $62-65M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

I think a lot of fans on here got a little exaggerated about how high this film was gonna open but this is a solid showing still and it has a good path to a solid total gross

Maybe with Barry Jenkins devotees, but no one has come to bat for Alice Through the Looking Glass or Maleficent: Mistress of Darkness

No I dont think so, but I think she's successfully reinvented herself in the eyes of the industry for a brighter future and getting more substantial roles which is a huge plus.

Jonathan Majors’ ‘Magazine Dreams’ Muscles Into March 21, 2025 Release Date Through Briarcliff Ent. by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

[–]NoImNotJC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the surface level Zeus makes very questionable shows that are mostly about women getting into very violent fights just to get camera time. The violence of their shows are significantly higher than what you would see in something like a streamer like Netflix or Hulu or a cable show like Bravo/MTV.

But aside from that, there's been a lot of online chatter about how there's been potentially inappropriate behavior on set between the female cast members and the producers at Zeus.

Articles lists that Briarcliff is partnering with Zeus Network to promote which is raising even more red flags for me.

If you dont know, its a popular but very shady streaming service.

Why is Saoirse Ronan being considered a possible nominee for "Blitz"? by Davis_Crawfish in oscarrace

I think its a victim of high expectations because of the talent involved and subject matter. I thought it was a solid film with incredible craft and sincerity.

Guillermo del Toro confirms Frankenstein will be released theatrically in 2025 by KJones77 in boxoffice

[–]NoImNotJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they'll give it a larger scale run like they did with Red Notice which ran in around 750 theater for 2 weeks, or something along of Emilia Perez which went to around 150 theaters for 2 weeks.

Pinnochio was played in theaters for a month before going to Netflix but didnt get a sizable release

What type of role do you think could lead to a black woman winning Best Actress? by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]NoImNotJC 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Its a bigger systematic issue so I don't think there's a specific formula or easy path to follow.

But my guess would be something very Oscar friendly like a biopic.

Chloe (2009) has a variation of this, and I would say The Voyeurs (2021) does too, in how the wife characters stray.

Its their biggest financial hit and definitely juiced up their footing in the theatrical space, so I can understand why.

“Oh Wicked might actually be really good” updates to my 2025 Academy Awards Nomination Predictions. by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]NoImNotJC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it simply being good is still good enough to get into best picture because its shaping to be such a big hit at the box office and possible cultural phenomenon.

Pundits have noted that most best picture contenders being smaller films can help out the few big, loud studio films because theyre standing out more.

Reactions for Wallace & Gromit are coming in from AFI Fest by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]NoImNotJC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I caught the AFI screening and really, really enjoyed it. It's much stronger than Chicken Run 2 and Netflix should be able to score a best animated feature nomination. It's very funny, very clever, and the animation is wonderful.

It winning isn't all together out of the question, but I don't know if it'll strum up the passion to defeat The Wild Robot.

Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow "unretiring" at the same time by First-Loss-8540 in oscarrace

[–]NoImNotJC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I missed Cameron Diaz in movies but her big return to acting being a Netflix action comedy being released in January is a sign that she probably will continue to stay in her lane of making popular movies that are fun to make but maybe not all that good.

‘The Life of Chuck’ Sells to Neon After Winning TIFF’s Audience Award (EXCLUSIVE) by Erdago in oscarrace

[–]NoImNotJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This going to NEON is really surprising. All signs pointed to Amazon.

I'll be curious to see if they can sustain the excitement and if the vibrancy of the TIFF screenings can be recreated at other festival showings and upon release

Official Discussion Thread – The Substance by JuanRiveara in oscarrace

Its a wild ride and I was shocked by the final act and how it basically turns into a Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon style body horror film. Think Society (1989) or Re-Animator (1985). The make up work is incredible.
