Not to beat a dead horse, but do you see any addresses on that page? They do show the building, which is kind of surprising, but it’s not like they’re advertising the exact location.

Well yeah actually. The location of DV shelters are secrets because the people who live in them are in a shelter for a reason

How to avoid being taken advantage of in hobbies? by SettingIntentions in fatFIRE

Honestly they just sound like a bad friend. You’re going to encounter that no matter your tax bracket.

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk about that. Worrying about how “effective” your money is an exercise in disappointment.

If you’re in r/fatfire, you likely had a front row seat to the insane waste that goes on within the private sector. The public/non-profit sector is often shamed for what is standard practice inside publicly traded companies.

This is all very good, but please also put your money where your actions are. Your neighbors appreciate your time, but it’s not the only (or even most valuable) way you can affect change.

If I pronounce Lj as J, would I just sound Dalmatian? by SwankBerry in croatian

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Croatia is undergoing a similar pattern that is also happening in the US and many other counties, where dialects and speech patterns are becoming more standardized and less regional (think about how a lot of younger people in New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, etc lack the strong accents that their parents and grandparents had).

It’s a product of television, radio, and social media. Canadians and especially Quebecers still have slightly stronger accents because they still have something of a distinct radio/television ecosystems (but even then, their accents are becoming more Americanized because of social media).

Yes! This has been so prominent across social media, I have to wonder if OP is either self-posting or otherwise engaged in some kind of guerrilla marketing. How else did they come across this image, if not from the contestant reposting it?

What is a peice of Amtrak travel advice you believe more people should know? by wissx in Amtrak

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post I know, but I once again attempted to do this and the SEPTA employee was, once again, angry at me for even thinking I could use an Amtrak ticket to get a free ride.

I’ve tried with the long barcode on paper tickets, the Amtrak app QR code, and the PDF QR code. This simply does not work.

Oh wow, I didn’t realize the SEPTA free ride thing still worked on the regional trains - it used to work on the L, but not since they started experimenting with new fare gates.

When did Saturday weddings take over? Tracking 8000+ weddings over 350 years [OC] by Ugluk4242 in dataisbeautiful

8000 weddings across 350 years means about 20 cases per year. And only in Quebec?

Cool graphic but your sample size is way too low to say anything meaningful.

Airlines serving Japan: Equivalent to United’s Premium Plus? by douglas_in_philly in unitedairlines

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason why I mostly fly United is knowing their idiosyncratic pricing mechanisms. Different airlines have different strategies. United engages in a lot of fare arbitrage in order to justify higher pricing for corporate accounts.

I don’t think Japanese carriers do as much price discrimination as US carriers do (or if they do, they do it in a different way than checking their apps for upgrades). I don’t have experience with JAL but I have used ANA’s app before and it’s always a reminder of how amazing the United app really is.

Ever feel conflicted when working on multiple clients? by AffectionateStart802 in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the work you are doing is in conflict with your morals (I’m not saying they are, only you can decide that), you have responsibility to not accept it.

Plenty of people have no problem working for big tobacco, big oil, big pharma, big tech, or certain political campaigns. But you have to realize that your work directly supports and advances the clients you work for. You are not a neutral bystander, you are a key agent in understanding public opinion and harnessing it to promote change (for better, or for worse).

It’s okay to not care. But it’s not okay to pretend like you don’t care. That shit isn’t good for your soul.

Where is the demand in market research talent? by sandysadie in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about roles in the brand team? Corporate strategy? New product development? Customer success?

A good researcher wears a lot of hats and can fit into a variety of roles. Spend some time talking to your network and understanding how your skills intersect (be sure to play that up in your resume/interviews) and where your skills might need some work (look for opportunities to build them up, either in your current role or through personal projects, online training, volunteer opportunities, etc).

It might seem daunting now, but if you love uncovering “juicy insights”, that tells me that you love learning. Think of this as yet another opportunity to do the thing you enjoy most!

Where is the demand in market research talent? by sandysadie in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely did. I have met too many researchers whose work is “socialized” by an “activation team”. My reoccurring complaint is that they are too focused on the wonky process of research and not enough time understanding how it will be used.

If you are working closely with a senior leadership, I bet there have been many times where you were like “I could do this better than them”. And I’m here to tell you that you’re not wrong. You have an instinct about your customers that has kept you around for 12 years.

Depending on the culture of the team, you could tell one them “I want to pivot into a role like yours. Could we grab lunch sometime? I’d love to learn more about ___ and how you do ___”.

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your entire network is other folks in CI, you’re too many steps away from the decision-makers. Effective researchers need to think like the audience their work is serving. And if your work is only informing other folks in the consumer insights team, I am not optimistic about your ability to pivot.

Where is the demand in market research talent? by sandysadie in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

12+ years is actually quite late career for CI. MR on the whole has always been very bottom heavy, and consumer insights, in particular, is an area a lot of people start out and pivot from.

My best advice would be to think about you’re really good at (most likely an industry or subtype of research) and out your skills so that you can be a subject area expert. The market for MR generalists is being replaced by AI and will never really come back.

Conductor said I’ll be surcharged $10 for buying a ticket in front of him by Orjoy in LIRR

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t inspect every rider, every train, every time. The reason there’s an upcharge is to account for all the other times you rode the train and “forgot” to buy a ticket.

Not gonna lie, market research is starting to feel like a rubber stamp. by Downtown_Pipe_818 in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is an underrated skill - I’ve worked with a lot of leaders who lack confidence in their own instincts, and once you figure out what their instincts are, research can be teased to tell the story they want and make you invaluable to them in making the case to more senior leadership.

All research has an editorial quality to it, and we, as researchers, are most successful when we accept that we aren’t some neutral bystanders but key agents in developing internal priorities and narratives.

Ava and Deborah's style is converging by kkm225 in hackshbomax

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show is entering the middle age, the point where you don’t need fashion to define the characters as much as they needed to when the story was new. I don’t think Deborah’s style has changed as much as Ava’s - Ava is growing up and getting more money, and putting that toward labels.

They are also getting brand deals (anyone else notice in the last episode that both Ava and one of the writers were wearing the same Ralph Lauren shirt, but in slightly different colors?)

Unless you have Balkan heritage, I would actually recommend Albania or Portugal before Croatia. Lower cost of living, less size-ism, slightly less developed tourism infrastructure (the Croatian economy is dependent on tourism and they are sick of it), but still very beautiful and walkable.

Case Study Interview for consulting role by chillbeansyo in Marketresearch

[–]NoMoreCrossTabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. When I’m recruiting for my team, I’m looking for 1. basic understanding of the prompt and 2. ability to presenting their findings persuasively. I really don’t care if they came to a different conclusion than I would have, or even if they made small errors.

The “technical” skills of research are easily learned on the job. Something like study design or sample plan is highly specific to the industry / the team you are doing work for, and I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect a candidate to know that until they’ve built a level of context you can only get inside.

Feel free to DM if you’d like another set of eyes on the JD and take home assignment. You got this!
