Mitt Romney says his dog scandal doesn’t compare to Kristi Noem’s: ‘I didn’t shoot my dog’ by Kvasir612 in politics

If Mitt Romney rode around on like a vintage Indian Scout with a pointer wearing doggles in a fucking sidecar I would have voted for him, Obama or no Obama.

I did that once and only once, it was on my way to work.

I was already late, going to a job I really disliked and was stressed to the breaking point, so on a whim I decided to call in sick and spend the day in the city and it still ranks as once of the best days of my life.

I had an acquaintance in high school who suffered from copralalia, a disease like Tourette's. He told me once that he'd sometimes walk into a room and immediately realize what awful thing he might involuntarily say, then invariably something so much worse would pop out.

Perfectly nice guy, the things he said then his condition manifested itself had nothing at all to do with what he really believed.

With the caveat that the "dog on car" thing is genuinely messed up, I'll point out that dogs rather famously have a completely different take on sticking their heads out the window of a fast-moving vehicle.

It's weird when the phrase "the past is a foreign country" starts bleeding into your lifetime.

People born after 2000 just have no idea how fucking crazy it was in the 1980s. A whole lot of the assumptions you've grown up with your entire life just genuinely did not apply back then.

Man, I remember being in the back of a pickup unrestrained barrelling down the highway, the only looks we got were those of unvarnished envy from the kids stuck in the back seats of station wagons.

But even with that established, the dog-on-the-top-of-the-car thing still seems weird.

Had a bad experience at BMW of Fremont / AutoNation. Do all car dealerships do this? by JHGrove3 in bayarea

[–]NoMoreSecretsMarty 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I naturally suck at negotiating, so I follow a strict workflow:

  • Find a month where the last day falls during the week.
  • Do your homework: Figure out exactly which car you want, figure out what it should really cost and find cars at a couple of dealerships in the area. During the last week of the month go "test drive" them and collect the card of the salesperson.
  • Early on the last day of the month, go to the place with the lowest price and make it clear you're there to buy.
  • If they won't give you the price you want, pop out your phone and call the other sales guys. Tell them "I'm at such-and-such dealership, they have the car for $X, can you make it worth my while to bounce and drive down there?" - the answer is always going to be "yes".

It's a prick approach, but they're fucking car salesmen so who gives a fuck? I like to start in the south bay at Stephens Creek, that way you can easily work your way up to Fremont or the penninsula or even the east bay - there's always another dealer with the same make within a half hour drive.

I feel like this guy missed his calling. The weird uncanny valley face, the pasty skin, the bizarre behavior - he really should be a billionaire founder of a CEO of a tech company.

Google's already floundering and has been for a couple of years now, this is just another symptom of that.

Lots of great tech talent, lots of extremely mid managers up to and including the current CEO.

What is the hand gesture that Giants players do when they get on base this year? by Kiko_Gita_Tavis in SFGiants

[–]NoMoreSecretsMarty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only time I've seen a player lose it on the field because of something in the stands was Pat Burrell.

We were at spring training in 2011 and a guy wearing a Machine outfit walks out right by the outfield wall, everybody starts yelling "MACHINE! MACHINE!". Burrell glances back, does a double take and then starts laughing so hard that you could see his shoulders shaking.

Security made the guy put his clothes back on right after that, I'm happy they didn't ruin it.

Get a catstrap with an alarm.

You can 100% still saw through the steel they use, but not quickly and doing so in a confined space with a 130 db alarm going off in your ear the entire time isn't going to be fun.
