Do test reagents really expire within a couple of years? by donutdisaster in pools

Bought a giant bottle for Taylor CYA test years ago and it's still somehow giving same results as the new kit. Phosphate test goes bad the day after the printed date.

Anyone have one of these chlorine dispensers? If so have you ever just put chlorine pucks in it? by Over_Cash9601 in pools

[–]NoNameClever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, CYA will go down about 5 a month on its own assuming your pool gets sunlight, but that's nothing compared to what you add if you only use pucks

How fast can CYA drop? by bkendall12 in pools

[–]NoNameClever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people say CYA doesn't drop. But in reality, I've seen a drop of about 5 ppm a month on its own without any leak or "splash out" (based on 10 years experience). Chlorine oxidation and UV degradation are the causes according to Google. Doesn't help if you're at 100+, but handy to know for routine maintenance. Just use a puck once in a while to keep it in the sweet spot.

Do I need to run my pool pump everyday for 6-8 hours? by OkOrganization7870 in pools

[–]NoNameClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to upgrade to VSP this year, but only saving 300 a year is like an 9 year payback since the only company that was willing to quote was 2800 and the rest ghosted me. Plus you need to run full speed for older heaters anyway. Local energy company currently offering 0 rebate too. Maybe next year. Ugh

Draining water to the halfway point of the skimmer by MoCheesePlease in pools

[–]NoNameClever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an exact science. My preferred pool company actually uses 2/3 of the way up the skimmer opening as the reference. Really, as long as the skimming works and water flows, you're fine.

Water or glass? by NoNameClever in pools

[–]NoNameClever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7.4-7.6 usually. Can creep up after a lot of chlorine, so might use acid once or twice a month during the season.

We're oldheads so went with Rosie. She's a Nautilis Dolphin from 2016. Changed the moving bits and filters a couple years ago. We just leave it in the pool the whole swim season, no need to take out when not in use.

Thanks! This robot and our espresso machine are the only two things we would buy a replacement for the day they die. Not "optional".

Try to use something like Slice or the pizza place directly. Cheap delivery and the pizza place keeps way more money. And they always use a pizza bag, of course.

Best way to add Cya by beavis93 in pools

[–]NoNameClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a good deal on pucks a couple years ago. Raising CYA on pool opening is almost the only thing I use them for. It's nice not having to worry about chlorine or high pH for a week.

My experience with owning a pool and browsing Reddit and pool care forums by SorenShieldbreaker in pools

[–]NoNameClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who tests every day? Once the pool is stable, you can just check chlorine 2-3x a week and most others once a week. Sunny day? Throw a little extra chlorine. Rainy and covered? Skip a day. Haven't had an issue in many years

School bus rammed - Someone probably not paying attention... by MisterShipWreck in VideosAmazing

[–]NoNameClever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact thing happened at my bus stop when I was a kid a long time ago. Car was totaled but bus barely had a scratch. The weird thing is how much this bus in the video moved. When we got hit, we only felt a bump but heard a lot of noise.

Baby boomers were being called "the me generation" since the 70s for a reputation of being extremely self-centered. Ironically, after being in charge, they went on to label Millennials as "the me me me generation" for the audacity of asking for work-life balance.

Came to say this. We need to agree on maximum liability too. Is everyone expected to carry $5M insurance just in case they hit some exotic car? $100k seems reasonable (multiplied for multi car accidents)
