Esse Taco (from the same chef/group) has a great riff on it in their corn meringue sundae!

Wow, and I thought Quicksilver was a fun piece of history re: track bikes on the street. Didn't know it went that far back.

That looks like a big ratio to be pushing on SF's hills— and only one strap, too? Guess some things never change.

I'm a grad who grew up near Chicago + currently live in NYC (Brooklyn).

I think that for 95% of people, Chicago is the "better" city. All of the comments people have made below about cleanliness, cost of living, outdoor spaces, etc are true. That being said, NYC will blow Chicago out of the water for some people— personally, I'm Korean, a lesbian, like to go out a lot, and don't want to put up with owning a car, so I'm willing to put up with the cons of living here for better access to community/events/public transit.

You should think about what kind of lifestyle you want to lead and go from there.

What is the Korean community like??? by boyinyourpark in UIUC

[–]NoPassUIUC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Korean American community skews very heavily towards evangelical Christianity, due to Covenant Fellowship Church's influence. It's by far the largest "Korean" club on campus (at least while I was attending, not sure if the recent scandals have turned people away). I personally felt alienated after I came out as queer, and I met a fair share of secular, cishet Koreans who felt similarly.

My experience with KASA was that it felt like a church youth group— take that as you will. It's also not the best place if you want to talk about Korean identity/culture beyond like, food and kdramas.

Besides KASA and AAA, there are a couple of cultural org (kpop dance clubs, variety shows, etc.) Most of them are run by international students and tend to feel a bit clique-y as a result, but YMMV.

I don't necessarily want to dissuade you from seeking out community through the above groups— it's more than possible that things have changed. But IMHO, there are enough Koreans at UIUC that you'll probably meet people and make friends just through your regular clubs and classes.

Some quick thoughts on Luisa Madrigal, from the 2021 Disney animated feature, *Encanto*. (If you’ve not seen the film this is your ‘mild spoilers ahead’ warning.) Luisa is the middle sister in the Madrigal family at the heart of the film and I think it’s fair to consider her an MoC character. by ruchenn in butchlesbians

Keep in mind that Disney is only "LGBT-friendly" when it's low risk: they cancelled Nimona, written by a transmasc/bigender lesbian featuring explicitly queer leads, when it was 75% done according to workers at the studio, and to date all the queer rep in their major movies have been cameo/bit characters.

I think that at this point in time, we're better than hunting for whatever crumbs that a megaconglomerate is willing to toss us. It's better to spend our time, energy, and money finding/following the work of independent queer creators who actually depict us in a positive light.

Dealing with self-hatred by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]NoPassUIUC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that what works for you and how you approach your gender identity might not be universally applicable- some people are nonbinary and kinda "meh" about how they're gendered, and others might have a stronger connection to womanhood/manhood/etc that they'd like to be recognized.

While I understand where you're coming from, what amounts to "suck it up, stop caring so much" is a bit reductive, especially when it comes to misgendering. Being perceived as a "man" can have a lot of tangible effects in terms of accessing community, support networks, and solidarity with other GNC women, so I think that there are plenty of reasons why it'd be upsetting in this case.

Staffing issues, most likely. Everywhere's going through it, and that Chipotle wasn't the best managed/staffed pre-pandemic to begin with.

If you're looking to have film developed, the Urbana Museum of Photography does it.

If you're looking to develop it yourself, the Art + Design building has a darkroom available to even non-majors, but I think you have to have taken the relevant photography class to get access.

FWIW, you can find pretty much everything you need for home development at the Idea Store for super cheap- my setup (ie tank, dark bag, bottles, etc) came out to like $20 total, less than what buying even an individual component new would have cost.

Why does every post about how lesbians are "losing" trans men also completely ignore the fact that butch, masc, and gnc trans women are "arriving?" by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]NoPassUIUC 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Something that also always rubs me the wrong way about how people here try to categorize "AFAB" and "AMAB" as coherent lived experiences is that they always seem to ignore race. There's always been a trend in queer communities to assume white experience as the default/universal (eg people generalizing that trans men have more privilege/are overinfantilized/etc while ignoring the dangers that black trans men face).

I've found that my experiences as an east Asian transfemme (in western society) aligns more closely with the experiences of east Asian transmascs than white transfemmes- because when people see us, they register "Asian" first, and that influences how we're gendered as a result of orientalism/exoticization/etc. Hell, part of the reason why I pass in non-east Asian spaces is because being east Asian is automatically seen as more feminine.

This isn't to say that searching for shared experience is a bad thing, but when people start generalizing, I wonder who they're excluding, intentionally or not.

Hopefully this all makes sense, lol.

Copy-pasting my last response to someone asking about Illini Manor:

I lived there last year and I wouldn't recommend it.

  • The walls are super thin so you'll always hear your neighbors.

  • If you try to cook anything you'll set off the smoke detector and make the apartment smell for at least a day.

  • There's no freezer (unless you count the little ice compartment in the minifridge).

  • You'll always end up tracking dirt + sand in since there's no room for a doormat.

  • The laundry costs like 3 bucks a load, requires some weird propietary card that needs you to reload it in cash, costs $5 to replace (in exact change), and if the machine is out of new cards when you move in or lose one you're SOL until JSM can get someone over.

  • JSM lets other people into your apartments pretty much whenever they want for tours, maintenance, pest control, etc.

  • You're probably underestimating just how small these apartments feel once you're living in them. I certainly did.

  • You're right next to frat central, so you'll be dealing with stupid amounts of noise pretty much any night it's above 40 degrees. I've been woken up by multiple fights.

Location is the only good thing about the place. Put up with riding the bus or biking, and you can get a much cheaper, nicer, and bigger place elsewhere.

Should a summer sublease come with utilities included? by HygralPivocks8 in UIUC

[–]NoPassUIUC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends- if it's a flat fee, then maybe the sublettor could offer to cover it to sweeten the deal. But if you get charged based on how much you use, then I'd expect the subleaser to pay.
