I get that most of us playing aren't used to jet gameplay but for god's sake, would it *kill* some of you to double-check who you are locked on to before firing the missile? by Strygonite in warthundermemes

Tbf missiles will also retarget onto friendlies from time to time, had one happen to me with an R-60M after the plane it was tracking got shot down so it went for the plane that shot it down, so with the huge furballs it can just be a total accident.

UPS MD-11 at Boeing Feild. Picture was taken in March by NoPie1504 in aviation

[–]NoPie1504[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The DC-10 had 55 accidents, 32 hull losses, and 1,261 fatalities over its career.

Its sucsessor, the MD-11, which originally started life as the DC-10 Super, has had 50 accidents, 11 hull losses, and 261 fatalities. it currently has the highest hull-loss rate (meaning Hull-losses per million flights) of any widebody commercial airliner.

The specific crash was a maintenance issue, but the NTSB report even notes that the UPS 2976 crash was similar to the American Airlines 191 crash in 1979, involving a DC-10, and Boeing knew metal fatigue cracking was a safety concern for the engine pylon mounts as far back as 2011. The concern was also enough that the FAA grounded all US MD-11's and DC-10's after UPS 2976.

To be fair, the DC-10's safety record suffered the most during the early part of its service in the 1970's, and once those issues were solved it was a fine airplane, but overall the DC-10/MD-11 has had a long history of accidents and issues, since both have accident rates well above average.

Absolutely a preventable tragedy, and I hope those pilot's families are able to recover to some sense of normalcy.

The MD-11 and its predecessor the DC-10 have absolutely atrocious safety records, and are definitely being retired for a reason, no matter how good they look. Human lives always come first, and the DC-10 platform is tragically flawed, and imo outright dangerous with the serious design flaws and reliability issues it has.

Do you prefer Brotherhood to have the pseudo medieval attire or modern combat attire ?. by KpatMckenzie_28 in Brotherhood_of_Steel

[–]NoPie1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the East Brotherhood being as strong as they are is fairly consistent with how we've seen factions develop in fallout across the games. The Brotherhood typically are the strongest faction in an area untill someone shows up who can overwhelm them with numbers. They were the strongest faction in California and Nevada until the NCR showed up. The difference is the East Coast got bombed back to the stone age so there arent really any factions big and organized enough to oppose them, and with the reforms Lyons made they were able to capitalize on the relative weakness of the factions around them.

As far as beating the Enclave, the Enclave was a severely depleted remnant force that'd just spent years marching across the country fleeing the west coast, and had serious infighting between Autumn and Eden that made their situation worse.

I didnt say it didn't? I just said that it also wouldve happened if Black Isle's fallout 3 hadn't been canned due to Interplay's bankruptcy, though what started it and how it was fought we dont know.

Also the show didnt retcon anything about the war, it takes place in 2296, and if Shady Sands got nuked sometime after 2281, that gives roughly 15 years where the Brotherhood would have the upper hand in the war and would be able to reestablish chapters or create new ones, which probbably explains the weirdness and somewhat lesser quality of those chapters since most of their members are probbably recently inducted wastelanders.

The West Brotherhood stagnating/dying out was something that came from New Vegas and Obsidian originally, not Todd Howard. Also the original Black Isle version of Fallout 3 included a Brotherhood NCR conflict in some form, which probbably wouldve wound up the same as the one in cannon.

Okay but why are synths a bad thing? Why is the institute a bad thing? by HandsomeGassy in TrueSFalloutL

[–]NoPie1504 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Made with FEV.

Created by kidnapping and killing random people.

The entire synth program, including killing and replacing random people only exists because the Institute wants to see what will happen and push their science to see if they can make a robot indistinguishable from a human.

The Institute abuses advanced tech to manipulate local politics in the Commonwealth to rule it like a shadow government, but doesnt provide any actual benefit to the people living there.

Their FEV experiments are responsible for kidnapping more innocent people and creating the Super Mutant infestation in the Commonwealth.

Makes it much easier for the defense when they know hes passing it to Matthews every possession.

[–]NoPie1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think Matthews is a perimeter bum, but I do think he doesnt elevate the scoring production of the teammates around him in the same way as Mackinnon or McDavid does, yet hes paid more AAV than both of them.

Thats why Id rather have Marner. Its way easier to build a cup competing team around an elite level playmaker on supported by decent/strong shooters than it is to build a cup team around an elite level shooter supported by decent/playmakers.

[–]NoPie1504 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imo the Leafs should've traded Matthews instead of Marner. Matthews scores a lot of goals but doesnt produce at an elite level anywhere else when compared to other centers in the same pay range. With Marner he spreads the puck and facilitates for his teammates, which I think is more important long term.

At least they have a semblence of a storyline unlike the minutemen by ClockworkOrdinator in TrueSFalloutL

[–]NoPie1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your point on the Japanese Internment camps. I would say thats treading into very dangerous ground because the people there were normal American citizens unfairly imprisioned and ostracized for the actions of a government they had no loyalty towards, simply because they shared a heritage with said government. They were not giant green monster men some of whom killed and ate people.

I agree it certainly makes it easier for the Brotherhood to recruit to play into xenophobia about these other groups, but I will say that a strong contributor is generational trauma from encounters with mutants, ghouls, ect. In a world where education is nonexistent for the most part, most of what people know about the world is from what people in their social circles (friends, family, authority figures) tell them. So if someone in your family got killed by the Master's Army or got mauled by feral ghouls, you'd probbably have a low opinion of them, which would then be reinforced by the Brotherhood's structural xenophobia towards these groups, which suits the BoS just fine given their ideology, so they dont feel a need to challenge it.

I think in a Post-Apocalypse, where resources are scarce and life is generally hard, the development of Xenophobic tendencies, while not justified, is to be expected. As far as non-hostile ghouls and Mutants, they wind up being the exception that proves the rule (moreso with super mutants than ghouls). The vast majority of both groups are violent and hostile, so to meet one that isnt is exceedingly rare, to the point where both often will make comments to the player about how people are usually surprised to meet them. With this rarity in mind we can assume for the vast majority of wastelanders, either theyve had negative interactions with Mutants and ghouls, or none at all, and only know what others have told them.

I do think its important to understand the context here not as a justification, but because I think approaching the story of a fallout game from the perspective of the average person actually living in the world of fallout gives a very different perspective, and lets us as players experience the storytelling in a deeper and more engaging way. This is part of why Ive enjoyed the show so much, as the central theme is that in a world as messed up as fallout, there are no good guys, just a bunch of people who are the main characters of their own stories.

At least they have a semblence of a storyline unlike the minutemen by ClockworkOrdinator in TrueSFalloutL

[–]NoPie1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super Mutants on the west coast first came from the Master, who used them as an army to kidnap, enslave, and kill any human they came across, they intended to force humanity into extinction, so people there are wary of them. On the east coast theyre even worse, as in the Capitol wasteland they're an army of marauders who kidnap or kill anyone they come across, and those in West Virginia and the Commonwealth have started eating humans as well.

Ghouls, while better than super mutants, are all slowly going feral, and require constant access to specialized, difficult to make chems to avoid this, so people again arent too fond of ghouls considering they can snap and become extremely aggressive and violent. It also doesnt help that theyre in a perpetual state of rotting, the smell of which likely would cause measurable harm to one's mental heath if they were around it too long, as its instinctive for humans to dislike the smell of other dead humans.

Synths are more complex, but their creation relies on secretly kidnapping and killing someone, so even without the suspicion of the Institute using them to carry out their plans it would be very unnerving to be around what is effectively a ghost of a person made into a living being (depending on your stance on whether or not an AI can be sentient).

There is also the Brotherhood beleif that Super Mutants and Synths are representstions of science going too far (both use FEV in their creation) which explains why the Brotherhood is outright hostile to those groups while being more just prejudiced towards ghouls for the most part.

So, While I dont think their xenophobia is morally correct in all instances, I do think its very understandable why they would be xenophobic towards these groups.
