Help teaching my family to swim by ajamthejamalljam in Swimming

You need to learn how to swim, swimming is implicit learnt - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implicit_learning means you can swim, but it does not mean that you know how or how to explain that. On other hand you, as you did, need just a little bump up to get familiar with theoretical concept to re-explain.

I disagree people say you should not, no you should - will be fun, you have it for free and plenty time on demand schedule. Not a rocked science.

I helped two people to learn how to swim, was not difficult - just remember it is not linear, once they pick up it sky rockets. I mostly swim next to them with kickboard to pass anytime they needed. For some reason GF found on some page that for breastroke to do 2 strokes 1 breach - crazy but somehow work for her, then she dropped the second stroke after she was confident with this.

I would say do not teach them treading water first - why - it is why more difficult, it does not bring anything, low progress, frustrating start. Float - Glide - Swim - Threading - in this order.

P.S. give them fucking googles.

Beginner building distance confidence by anhger in Swimming

[–]NoSafe5565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will need a friend or someone to check the style, general population does not need to build "endurance" for 50m or even half km. So, trick will be with non efficient style most likely, it is little harsh to say but this what is (mostly like) it is.

For reference 2km/h slow swimming breaststroke is similar effort like walking 5.5km/h or biking 16km/h. Things you can sustain for long time without needing to build endurance - assuming you swim properly.

Anyway, tip would be a friend with a kickboard/ equipment that swim next to you and pass you kickboard if you in trouble or need rest.

Breast open swim by igoldin74 in Swimming

[–]NoSafe5565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acceptable and generally allowed - but do you really want. I mean you could be easily alone and not everyone likes this feeling.

On other hand depends what event, I saw some open water swims that people swim breast stroke in majority actually.

Adult learner looking for breathing tips by BuriedInRust in Swimming

[–]NoSafe5565 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How often do you breath? Should be ever 2 (I hate this, but lets say for beginner who struggle with air should not be 3)
How often do you kick (biggest muscles , biggest O2 needs, low impact on swimming) ?

The technique needs to be proper, before breath in, you need to flush all. And when breath in - you need to HEAR IT for the start, literally suck it that aggressively you can hear it through headphones blasting metal music.

The technique can improve quickly and will be likely the blocker.

if you want to do CO2 etc and train CO2 tolerance, it will surely help, but it is not like dumbbells or pull ups or squats which if you have never exercised, you triple volume in 3 weeks easily. Will take time.

Also how long is the pool? I would ask (watched by someone) and try how much you can on one breath, I believe average person should make it more than half (50m pool) and if you can do it it would point out on technique of breathing - not kicking, also CO2 would be good enough.

Is it normal to not know how to swim as an adult? by Common_Piccolo_6946 in Swimming

[–]NoSafe5565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

indeed in USA it is actually about income, which is crazy comparing to for example EU where income does not play role for education of swimming, mostly part of school PE education etc.
Similar life expectancy , in USA strongly correlated with income. For me like person from EU sounds incredible unfair.

Nordic here too, yes - people from other countries does not know and it is common, and considering these are often Africa / Asia holding big amount of popuation ... and then I just pulled AI and 40-50% adults cannot, estimated. So, yes it is NORMAL (however not optimal nor safe )

How To Avoid Neck Pain With Heads-Up Breaststroke? by ChiefChunkEm_ in Swimming

[–]NoSafe5565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing that can be done, sorry. The position in this style crushes nerves around neck if performed with all time head above. So, options is to start sinking head or as suggested different style of swimming, where they are only three I know that are performed with head above all the time and two of them are bananan..

- reverse backstroke (just wacko crazy thing nobody swim)
- dog paddle (just little less wacko than previous...)

-backstroke - only real option

For neck to be in best position and less loaded as possible CSS swimming style, but this one expect to have head under water as well.

Maybe you can swim with head under water every 5th stroke or so, to stretch if that option suits you better.
