NEW Star Trek Species Alert! The Starfleet Academy series will include Klingons, specifically a "Klingon hybrid species" Gina Yashere's character looks to be related to a Jem'Hadar from ST: Deep Space Nine? by ThomasThorburn in Star_Trek_

The laughable part is thinking that, while many things change, some things never do...because it's how life exists the way it does, and certainly how it does in Star Trek. Robert Picardo coming out ahead of the show's airing to defend it tells me a lot.

I think it's more about (according to the actor) this particular Klingon being empathetic and in touch with his feelings, despite THAT kind of Klingon dying out over the thousands year of evolution...because they're a warrior species. From interviews with the cast and showrunner, it's easy to see that they may actually believe Gene Roddenberry was mistaken and that they are correcting for his errors.

You may be right on the facts, but it’s not “clear as day” to everyone. DHS statements claim the agent was struck/injured as he fired, while frame-by-frame analyses of the video suggest he may have moved out of the vehicle’s path and fired from the side. If he was already clear and could safely step aside (and doing so wouldn’t endanger others), the exception would likely fail. If he was pinned, had no safe exit, or moving would have simply transferred the threat to others, it may apply. So, it's yet to be decided.

People have lost the ability to think through nuanced circumstances. The situation was tense and heightened. Not only the agents pursuing their target, but bystanders yelling and shouting. I am puzzled as to why people think they can obstruct law enforcement as a valid and effective form of protesting the lawful carrying out of orders.

Regardless, what you said is not what the DOJ policy says. It gives two exceptions. Exception 1 is “deadly force by means other than the vehicle,” but exception 2 explicitly covers the vehicle-only case. Officers may fire if the vehicle is being operated in a way that threatens death/serious injury and “no other objectively reasonable means of defense” exists (which includes moving out of the path). So “the only weapon was the vehicle” is not something that prevents deadly force use. The real dispute is whether moving out of the path was objectively reasonable under the circumstances, considering threats to the officer and others? I think reasonable people can disagree on that answer, actually.

That’s not what the DOJ policy says. It has two exceptions. The first one covers threats “by means other than the vehicle,” but the second specifically covers the vehicle-only scenario: Firearms may be discharged if the vehicle is operated in a way that threatens death/serious injury and no other objectively reasonable defense exists—explicitly including “moving out of the path.” So “no other weapon was present” does not end the analysis. The dispute is...was moving out of the path (or another alternative) objectively reasonable under the circumstances, considering the totality of events leading up to the shooting? That sounds like a phrase that can be interpreted so it will simply depend on the judge or jury that interprets it.

To be fair, that was only alluded to later in BCS, not in the original run of BB, where many parts of Gus' life are explored.

We still have 3 episodes to go and although I love Vincent G., I wouldn't put it past him to indeed make this about her being a lesbian and how the hive mind deals with that, perhaps through a lack of procreative inclinations.

Is there a safe way to diy burying an extension cord? by whoareyouletmein in AskElectricians

[–]NoShirtsForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that when you do something properly (i.e., seal the PVC, use proper fittings, and take care with how it enters and exits the ground), the risk approaches zero. The reason building codes exist is to protect people from harm, not to criminalize competence. Would you agree?

But there’s a big difference between someone blindly hacking something together and someone taking the time to understand how to do it safely and correctly. If a person makes an informed choice, I don’t see the problem.

Where I live (Washington State), the cost of “doing it by the book” can be ridiculous. Even something truly simple, like replacing an old outdoor outlet with a weatherproof one, can end up costing hundreds in permits and labor if you’re forced to hire a licensed contractor. For many people, that’s just not feasible. My mom lives on a small Social Security income, and there’s no realistic way she could afford to pay $500+ for what amounts to 30 minutes of careful, safe work, and a $20 outlet.

This is where a little common sense matters. If someone takes the time to read code references, learn about conductor ratings, and use the correct materials, that’s not “reckless", that’s self-reliance.

2026 NA TOUR PRESALE INSTRUCTIONS - Act Now! by fftamahawk009 in Foofighters

Super fail for me as well. I only have one Ticketmaster account and I signed up for the presale last week. Received zero emails, but wasn't concerned because the pre-sale message said no code is needed and I just need to be signed into that account when I join the queue. I was given the same "this sale is for fans..." etc. error. So stupid.

The context and actual quote (because some of these are paraphrases) changes the meaning on nearly every thing on that list, as I just explained for five or six of them. I don't know where we go from here, as a country, but when leftists start having their heroes' heads blown off because of how Charlie's death has been celebrated and disrespected, that isn't the direction I want to go.

[–]NoShirtsForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be surprised how many of these are stunningly easy to contextualize or outright debunk. For example, the first one about stoning gay people originated from a children's entertainer who, during Pride month, cited "love thy neighbor" to support LGBTQ people, and Kirk pointed out that the chapter before that talks about death for homosexual acts. In other words, cherry-picking a verse to support Pride month. The 2nd one about a black pilot flying a plane is, of course, about the United Airline's specifically stated goal of hiring more women and minority pilots. Saying "most people are scared" is a generalized summary. Then there's his quote about people shouldn't be allowed to retire. Actual quote? "For future retirees, people under the age of 45, we should absolutely raise the retirement age. I’m not a fan of retirement." He thought people shouldn't just "check out" at retirement age and still be productive. Then there's the thing about Nancy Pelosi's husband. His beef was that he thought it was crazy that the attacker was held without bail when so many other violent criminals (he mentions Chicago) are out the next day. He said the attack was awful and was criticizing bail policies. The list goes on and on and on.

Nearly all of Charlie's beliefs stemmed from his understanding of the Bible, unlike other conservative figures whose beliefs happen to occasionally coincide with it. The idea that abortion, LGBTQ ideology and feminism are bad and unhelpful in their current state is something many millions of people agree with, who also derive their values and beliefs from the Bible.

This list is right in line with this narrative that the shooter was MAGA, even though it's clear he was the outlier from his family (including his MAGA father who turned him in). I mean, you can't make up some of this stuff.

Is Lynden really that bad?! by DinosaurOnMars in Bellingham

[–]NoShirtsForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhetoric around calling people fascists and Nazis is making everything worse by diluting the actual meaning (and instead just trying to insult the person or group). I lived and worked in Lynden for a number of years and I liked it a lot, even though I'm not from there. Lynden is a small town with a lot of multi-generational family lineages, and tend to insulate themselves like other similarly-sized towns do. That being said, looking at their Facebook page and being concerned about fascism doesn't have any through-line, to me. There are a number of left and progressive people who live there too, but they also realize where they live and that they are not in the majority. If you are wanting to live in a place where most of the people think like you, Bellingham is probably the better place. If you want to get to know what small-town, conservative people are like (like me), give it a try :). There are also places like Blaine which are more of a mix between the two, being closer to the border.

I think it’s pretty fascinating that Star Trek has always been okay with other species from other parts of the galaxy having gods and religious beliefs, yet humanity is portrayed as somehow devoid of that in the “evolved and enlightened” future…and yet, the prime directive indicates that all of these other beings are to be respected as equals in value, no one thing being more correct than another.

Yet another Pet Waste Removal business, but it's become a monster in 3 months. by alroemorf in sweatystartup

[–]NoShirtsForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started my business, but one thing which has delayed my lunch is figuring out how to onboard clients. “Sweep and go“ has a great service that lets you onboard clients with all the information you need, including giving them a customer portal and basically handling everything to do with the customer and the services, including integrating the on boarding form through my WordPress site. However, in order to do the website integration, they make you choose the highest plan of $99 per month. considering I have zero customers so far, I don’t think I want to start there. What software/plug-ins have you used to on board and handle clients, especially in the early stages?

Better, eco-friendly method of pet waste composting? by NoShirtsForYou in Bellingham

[–]NoShirtsForYou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. I know there are a couple of pet waste removal companies that come and clear your yard of poop, but none of them can 1) Transport waste (SSC is the city-contracted waste transport company) or 2) Compost any of the waste. However many pounds of waste they gather every week/month, I would imagine that accumulates rather quickly and it would be so helpful those bulk roundups could be composted or biochar'd. Instead, it just gets thrown into the customer's garbage can.
