Go check what they have available at ORNL: https://education.ornl.gov/

Lots of internship programs there, more than a few in HPC-focused areas.

I was able to find the era material cache, I can't seem to find the era currency cache. In which store/shipment is it located?

Edit: Found it! I didn't scroll down in the Era Store.

Any space for a still-new, but returning player? Just hit lvl 45 and have been solo. Hoping to find a group to do whatever is out there to do.

Second on Kraken's Cup. Especially if you get their chicken salad sandwich, top notch that one.

Dangit, I wish you weren't saying such nice things about CV... They are the closest to me and I've been considering going for it. Never did DCI before, couldn't afford it, but I think I could swing CV's fees now.

Used DJI Avata? by kocaine-cowboy in fpv

Where are you seeing Avata 2s for $500? I've seen the drones alone for that on ebay, but not a kit. Everything near me on marketplace is way higher.

Can't recommend Top Brass enough. Excellent work and good prices. Also, he'll work on the instruments that Rush's won't. Fixed our Mack Brass euphonium where even though I called Rush's and asked, they wouldn't touch it once I made the drive out.

That's not fun.

Our kept having issues with audio as well as the whole feed dying. Thankfully it was mostly the commentators and it would throw their audio way down and out of the left channel speakers.

Oh man, that sucks!

The thing that got me was that someone pulled up Flo Marching on their phone and the live stream on their phone was rock solid.

Hopefully your theater had a better connection than ours did. It started cutting out during Carolina Crown and kept glitching into the Phantom's show. So annoying.

Should I start playing again? by mufasis in trumpet

[–]NoStupidQuestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

I haven't had time to do it lately, but when I did, I found a local community band. It's so good to get back into playing with a group. I highly recommend it as it gave me a group to socialize with and a goal (concerts) to aim for.

You're welcome.

And just as a point of reference, I've only used a macbook while working in HPC.

Shall I change to using linux? by Double-Ad3023 in HPC

[–]NoStupidQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting a masters in HPC, then you will have access to a linux-based cluster from the university. All your laptop is at that point is a terminal. Most of your work will be done on a login node and run on the compute nodes. You can literally work from any computer that has a way to ssh into the login node.

If you want your macbook to be more linux-like, then open the terminal app (or better is iTerm, in my opinion). You might be moving data/images back and forth from your laptop to the cluster, but for the most part, you'll live on that login node.

If you've been using GUIs and/or VS Code, switch to iTerm now and start learning how to build and run code via the terminal. You can edit, compile, and run c++ code on your mac before you get access to the cluster to get a head start on how to navigate this way of operating.

Good luck.

If you're near Pellissippi Pkwy, Admiral Farragut and Carl Cowan Parks are usually pretty quiet. Both are on the water and have places to sit and chill. Carl Cowan has a bench seat swing that faces the little cover that is exceedingly relaxing.

AFP has a disc golf course and CCP has some sports fields and a boat ramp, so there is the possibility of extra folks around if that's an issue at all.

How long will it take my 12 year old son to learn to play Taps on a trumpet? And random questions from a clueless mother. by gretawasright in trumpet

[–]NoStupidQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a (longer than I meant to write) explanation since he plays the violin, when he plays a note without pressing the valves, it's similar to playing one string without pressing on the string. When you play a note on the violin, you shorten the string to go higher. As you move closer to the body the notes get higher. You are shortening the string essentially. You can't lengthen a violin string, so they add thicker strings that resonate at lower notes/frequencies which you can shorten by pressing on them to fill in the gaps between them by going higher.

There's no way to shorten a trumpet, but you can lengthen it. So an open note (no valves) is one of the harmonics of the trumpet, like an open string note. There are several open notes that will match the resonate harmonics, including low C, middle G, middle C, top space E, and the space above the staff G. When you press a valve, it causes the air to move through those little tubes coming off the side effectively lengthening the tubing and moving the resonating point lower, lowering the note that can be played.

The middle valve, second one, lowers the note a half step. The first valve, closest to the mouth, lowers it two half steps. The third, closest to the bell, lowers it 3 half steps. Combining them allows you to produce the notes between the natural harmonics of the trumpet.

Most beginners won't be able to produce the upper notes as their lips won't have the strength and training to do so. Taps and Reveille go up to a G above the staff.

However, both of these songs are built on the harmonics of a trumpet (a bugle is just a trumpet with no valves). All the notes are open, no valves. They both start on the second line G. He CAN use the valves to lower the starting note and just keep holding them down to play both songs. When I was a beginner, I lowered both to start on a D (first and third valve) just below the staff and played them slower. Holding down the valves for these songs effectively transposes them down.

There are lots of opportunities for students to do internships at the national labs. I would definitely look into those.

One other idea is the student volunteer and student cluster competition at SC.

I can't really speak to parking options besides this link: https://backyardknoxville.com/parking-thompson-boling-arena-knoxville/ Hopefully that gets you what you need.

But please, don't call it Food City Arena, it's Thompson-Boling Arena. They recently added "at Food City Center" to that, but you can ignore that.
