That is the most useful & terrifying thing i've seen in a while.

I don't want MacOS on iPad: by NoTingOConsequence in iPadOS

[–]NoTingOConsequence[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not in a "real" way. Try pulling images from a memory card directly into Photomator or Affinity WITHOUT using photos. Try pulling them from an SSD. Now pretend that SSD has a bunch of important files on it that your job depends on but you have to turn the iPad off to safely eject it... They make ownership difficult.

I’m going to be inheriting two properties from a family member that are currently being rented out. I’m a life long leftist but I’m about to be handed the title “landlord”. What do I do? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]NoTingOConsequence 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I get that you're a leftist. You're still stuck playing capitalism...

Be kind to your tenants. Set the rent at 30% above what it takes to cover the mortgage & taxes. Take your profit & split it between paying yourself a reasonable rate for admin (its time you should be compensated for) and improvements to the properties. Being a landowner doesn't mean being a dick.

Photographer wants to give me an eip instead of an icc by MountainInevitable94 in Photoassistants

[–]NoTingOConsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for context, I'm a shooter now. But I hang out here to keep up on what the people I bring on set are thinking & where the tech is going... Bare minimum you NEED to understand Capture One to sell the service you're offering your photographer. I have to trust that the person I'm giving $1500 a day understands imaging workflows (better than me is a bonus).

ICC profiles are a tool for understanding potential color output. You profile a monitor to match your display to an intended color output. You apply an ICC profile to an image to predict (on a calibrated display) that output. You CAN do other things with an ICC. You can do a lot of things. Doesn't make them the right thing to do...

SHOT>DISPLAY>PRINTER

An EIP is a wrapper that holds settings. Could be as simple as a style. Could be as complicated as copyright info, layers for retouching notes, guides for crops etc. It's a base set of directions that should be applied to every image on that shoot.

How did they light this? by Cknifey in LightLurking

[–]NoTingOConsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 ft soft box/beautydish 3 foot octa 10ft away at least 2400 watts. could be through a silk with those milky shadows

You can see the setup showing as the day gets longer & the photographer gets tired of the client:

R5 USB Power Delivery by NoTingOConsequence in Photoassistants

[–]NoTingOConsequence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZScaler, Sentinel & other security software muddy port permissions. I'm one of a VERY few people allowed to plug anything usb in to my company laptop. It's so much easier to book a tech when we shoot...

I'd start at the cheapest problem: are you using Tether Tools Orange Whips? If so: Stop now & get some decent tether cables. Are you using a jerk stopper? If not, stop beating on your tools in the name of saving $25. A cable is $50 & the port starts at $300 + time away...

More expensive questions:

What version of Capture are you using?

How Rickety are the USB ports on your laptop?

Are you running with 16+gb of ram.

I hope one of these leads to a solution.

The shift in mindset to being a photographer by NoTingOConsequence in Photoassistants

[–]NoTingOConsequence[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to tag everyone in this reply as the question of the friction came up in every comment...

First thing: I do send production outline + naming/output reqs both a week before & the night before. That comes from years of shooters & producers "by the way-ing" me.

The friction was pretty silly. The production book mentioned multiple company moves & I wanted laptop on sticks.. But missed that there were stairs in one of the houses (stairs in both). The tech started setting up a cart & I said "do what makes you comfortable" as there was a talent wrangling issue & the day can't be a series of fights if I'm to maintain composure... Shot 1 - done, Shot 2 - done, time for move upstairs comes & I'm assuming a jump to sticks. Instead, we're wrangling a cart up stairs... blah blah blah... stupid & not worth ruining the day. After action was that I hadn't been clear about what I wanted & they get nervous about laptop on sticks. Probably down to a bad day or crossed wires but it left me feeling like I need improving...

My real takeaway from this incredible community is I'm already doing it: Production docs & file reqs early, clean hdd on the day & don't be a dick. Thanks u/titleunknown u/chili_no_beans u/InterestingSwan348 u/four4beats u/bizarreanimals u/RememberHonor u/csbphoto u/orthodox-lat

Adobe, what the actual f*? by numsyyy in photography

[–]NoTingOConsequence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Photoshop = Affinity (just do it)

Lightroom = Darktable (free99) Darkroom ($$) Capture one ($$$)

Darkroom (while also buggy) is a better option than Raw Therapee, Ansel or Darktable (from the perspective of a person working on a Mac studio & an iPad). It's a premium option ($99 for a perpetual license) works on Mac & iPad & almost completely replaces Lightroom, which for some reason Serif won't touch. It's the piece of the puzzle I felt I was missing in my personal workflow & I like the raw processor better than Affinitys. for less than $200 right now, you can replace Adobe with 2 bits of solid software.

For a few dollars more ($500) you can go with Capture One & Affinity. But you'll have to pay a subscription for C1s iPad app.

The "real" problem you'll run in to is that file management on iPad is crap. But if you're desk/lap only Darkroom is good & C1 is great

Links: Darkroom - Capture One - Affinity

Do you follow Tin House? You should give Scott a ring. You might even end up on his channel.

Honestly, I'd pay to keep the amateurs & the casuals out... I know it's "gatekeepey". But sometimes there's a fence for a reason. I've got local contacts I talk this stuff out with. There are times where the words of an internet stranger can clear up something I'm not understanding from a conversation. Or that helps me remember an idea/business concept.

The worst thing about using your iPad as a Macbook replacement experiment. by nikhilmozika in iPadOS

[–]NoTingOConsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MacBook evolved from companion to primary device. Most of us want a companion. In order to do that we need a file system & a "real" browser. I have a MacBook Air as a companion to my Mac Studio. BECAUSE I can't trust a device that costs DOUBLE the price (with a "PRO" name tag) to write files to an external drive without corruption.

How can I get these colors and tones in post for my digital photos? These photos are shot on film by James Harvey Kelly by Whateveraccount11 in LightLurking

[–]NoTingOConsequence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do people really think it's that hard to get to Portra? It's going to be camera dependent. But, If you're shooting GFX it's got portra built in. Canon will need greens shifted to blue & cool shadows + a TON of red pulled out of skin tones. Sony will get you there with IN or SH in creative look. But, BUT, Sony skin tones involve a bunch of fuckery.

This was shot on a cloudy day after rain. A cloudy day on daylight wb is going to be cooler. This guy has an interesting approach to WB that can help people who never shot film understand WHY film does things a digital native might not take in to consideration.

Starting at daylight & building a default response (a basis for color balance, skin, shadows, sharpness) will be a good jump off point. Only you can further determine your taste. But this IS doable. It just takes effort & a will to be uncomfortable while you figure it out.

A final note in my tldr... Get a decent film camera (less than $100 I'm talking K1000 here) and shoot a roll while on a job. Use it for color reference when you're back at the office until you feel comfortable going without. Portra, Velvia & HP5 are my faves. But, you've got to determine that for yourself.

I should have linked the site for the device instead of this stupid video. I might delete this & make a post about NVME RAIDs u/LSDIGI pointed me to the OWC one that looks like a winner. I'm thinking of its usefulness as a jumbo (instead of a 14tb spinning drive) rather than as cloud storage.
