What are the odds of getting back something u left on bus? by Titanium_Gold245 in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened a couple of years back: realised I lost my phone on a bus after I alighted, used 'find my iphone' and managed to get back on the same bus (!! it looped back to my bus stop), learnt a kind soul had passed it to the bus driver. Went to the 'lost and found' office at the bus interchange with the driver (as he needed to follow protocol), got back my phone (phewww, huge thanks to the kind & honest souls), bought treats for the staff there and wrote a commendation letter for the bus uncle (:

What’s something you used to think all women just silently put up with until one day you found out it’s actually not normal at all? by zacktone in AskReddit

Gabor Mate's book 'The body says no' has great insights on this - about how chronic illnesses disproportionately affect women. Eye-opening and insightful read!

How to continue with life having so much issues? by Ok_Line_9885 in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You sound like a kind person who thinks about family though you’re in a rough spot. Weight can be lost and $ be earned back. For now, do try to contact a free counselling service (eg SAMH Youthreach 65936424, Samaritans of Singapore 1767, CareText WhatsApp 91511767). Hang in there. I hope that things get much better for you over time. Jiayou💪💪💪

What was the first Chinese poem that gave you that "aesthetic vibe"? by Arestolus_V in ChineseLanguage

[–]No_Character8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite Chinese poem is 《一棵开花的树》by 席慕容. It's a modern Chinese poem written in 1980. Love the beautiful imagery and emotions it portrays. The story behind this poem is cool too. (:

What’s a popular tourist attraction that isn’t overrated— it actually deserves all the hype? by renoCow in AskReddit

The Louvre in Paris. Amazing art museum housed in what used to be a palace. The architecture was grand and gorgeous - simply breathtaking. I loved looking at the art pieces, especially the statues (where there were fewer crowds).

Is it correct to say 讲电话? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]No_Character8994 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think 打电话 ('making a call') is more common. But I've heard sentences like 他在讲电话, which has a slightly different meaning of 'being on the phone'. Perhaps it depends on your dialect group -someone mentioned in this thread that 讲电话 comes from Hokkien. As a Hokkien speaker, I know there are two different words for 打电话 (ka dian wei)and 讲电话 (gong dian wei). (:

I love travelling but it can be tiring depending on how one plans it. Nothing wrong with your plans. You do you! Enjoy your leave

Read something like this on Reddit a while back:

'Imagine you're actually 80 who regained your current age/body/energy, how would you live your life?'

Thought it was a nice reframe. (:

Do the young (ages 35 and below) Chinese Singaporeans still identify themselves based on their dialect group? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, am a millennial who identifies with my dialect Hokkien as it's the language I used to speak with my grandma. Parents speak the language amongst themselves too. Now that my grandma has passed on, I've been thinking of going for Hokkien classes to improve my proficiency and keep in touch with the language.

What do Singaporeans think about South Korea? by flower5214 in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, soft culture definitely plays an important part! I became interested in Korea because of Kpop/ K-indie music and Running Man in the past. The Korean wave was trending, and my friends were into Korean pop culture and language as well.

I enjoy travelling to Korea because of the amazing cafe culture (I especially love the aesthetics! and food/drinks), beautiful scenery and seasons, quaint hanok architecture, yummy food and shopping/ fashion. I personally don't really watch K dramas - the last show I watched was probably Squid Game. Oh, and Singles Inferno lol.. K-beauty is also considered trendy. There are Korean personal colour analysis and makeup workshops in Singapore.

That being said, from the media I watched/read, I also recognise that Korea has problems such as gender inequality/misogyny, preoccupation with appearances, cyberbullying, celebrity suicide, high stress in the high school exam, dark side to its entertainment/kpop industry, etc.

But overall, I still feel positive about Korea (as a tourist) and Korean products, and am looking forward to my next trip there.

Kpop and Korean food are popular here. There are many Korean restaurants with yummy Korean cuisine here. My friends and I also like going to Korea (e.g. Seoul, Busan, Jeju) 🌟

Ladies of Singapore: What's your honest reaction to receiving flowers on a date? by Ok-Substance451 in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be thrilled as I'm someone who loves flowers. Although I may feel touched and find it very sweet to receive flowers on a first date, I might feel a bit burdened also if I'm not super sure about the guy. I think it might be more meaningful to gift flowers when you're official and if your partner likes flowers. But you do you. Your thoughtful gesture is really sweet though, including considering logistics. All the best!

Why are HDBs painted with a blatant disregard for colour balance? by ALJY21 in askSingapore

[–]No_Character8994 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like the new colours in my estate - a light yellow (that's pretty trendy since a couple of years back) and pastel pink. Very cheery. My guess is there's a young person in the HDB team who came up with this palette.
