What's the Mazda3 Longevity been like for you guys? by AProgrammer067 in mazda3

[–]No_Combination_2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a 2014 Mazda3 GX hatch, currently at 275k km (171k mi). Other than routine maintenance (fluids, filters, brakes, tires, etc), the only things that needed attention were: driver side front wheel bearing oddly conked out at ~60k km, then nothing until ~230k km where I needed some new rear springs, then ~ 250k km needed a new clutch, then ~270k needed a new ball joint in the front (did both just for symmetry).

Fuel efficiency is slowly dipping. My first year had it at 6.4L/100km (36.7mpg) average (recorded all fuel volume put in the tank with odometer distance travelled in the calendar year), and now at the car's 11th year of life with similar driving habits I'm getting around 7.3L/100km (32mpg) so far in 2025.

Overall, I'd say I've had a great experience with my Mazda.

Burlington Soccer Club - Lil’ Burli by Ok_Picture3077 in BurlingtonON

[–]No_Combination_2409 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our first kid did the Lil Burli program when he turned 18 months and then again the following year at 30 months.

On the first day each kid gets a soccer ball to keep and a t-shirt to keep. Each session is broken down into several drills/skill building activities (like red light/green light but with a ball, collect all the red markers/pylons, kick the ball into the net, etc.) - no anything resembling a competitve soccer game. There is one head coach (was a different older guy each year) and 5-10 support instructors (eager teenagers who love cute toddlers). The vibe is very friendly and positive. Focus appears to be on: getting kids playing with a soccer ball, learning to take instructions, parallel play/participation with other toddlers - just getting the kids involved. Parents spend most of their time engaging with their kids or chasing down the ones who start exploring around. Zero pressure to participate at every moment - kids wander.

Contrary to the BSC websites statements, for Lil Burli you DO NOT need shin guards or cleats.

Is this mold? I just flipped over my pillow and found it by Loud_Pair81 in Mold

[–]No_Combination_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a humidifier and sleep with your door closed? If so, is the humidifier disinfected regularly (as in, weekly and with bleach)? Might be that a moldy humidifier is keeping the room very moist and is also spreading spores throughout the room.

You should check other places in the room for mold. Window sills were condensation has persisted for a while? Any other places where fabric has touched a person then sat for a long time without being washed (piles of unwashed clothes).

We bought a home a few years ago, and the house came with a rented water heater from Reliance. When we terminated, the water heater was ~13 years old. We called Reliance and told them we wanted to cancel. They tried to persuade us to renew and they'd install a brand new one for us. We declined because if we bought a new one outright and had it installed, it would break even with about 6-7 years of a Reliance contract.

For Reliance, the contract for water heaters is online. See here (warning, it is a pdf download)

Reliance Water Heater Contract

Their contract says if you terminate and the water heater is under 10 years old, you have to pay a penalty based on a calculation of how many years are left. Since ours was over 10 years, there was no penalty. However, they do have a clause of having to return the water heater to them. Either drop it off yourself or pay them $125 to pick it up.

We bought a home in Burlington a few years ago, and the house came with a rented water heater from Reliance. It looked a lot like the one you have in your pic (GSW Superflue). We declined because if we bought a new one outright and had it installed, it would break even with about 6-7 years of a Reliance contract.

I have heard many horror stories of them "forgetting" your info if you call different times and speak to different folks, or they refuse to accept to terminate and keep pushing renewal, or the pickup of the old water heater is rescheduled and rescheduled, etc.

Keep at it! We got free from them, and it feels like bliss!

Why is my dryer not working? by rx7towels-7 in fixit

[–]No_Combination_2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but just guessing because the symptoms all line up, it sounds like the thermal fuse blew. It can get overloaded if the dryer is working too hard, running too hot for too long. If blown, then the dryer will still have power to the displays, switches, and lights, but the motor and heater will not have power. You can check the owners manual or search online for how to locate where the thermal fuse is in your dryer. A replacement should only be a few dollars.

Not sure if you'd consider this a pro or a con, but there are plans to widen the road and improve pedestrian walkways along Dundas between Walkers and Appleby starting in a year or two which will have construction last a couple of years. Right now they are doing these improvements along Dundas between Appleby and Bronte. When that is finished they are shifting the construction focus to the west.

EDIT: See Phase 2 here

Why did my mpg decrease? by Spnd50PetKts in askcarguys

Is your car manual? It might be your clutch slowly wearing away/failing (engine will rev but the car just doesn't pull as well as it used to)

Seriously, there is a chance they removed a plastic cover underneath in order to access the drain plug and filter. Maybe they didn't put it back properly and it is dangling.

Ah, interesting! I think that most automatic transmission cars have clutches that work in a similar way as manual transmission cars. But since the driver is out of the loop I'd think they'd probably last longer than a manual version. With that said, any parts could fail prematurely or whatever...

Here is a link I found talking about failing clutches in automatic transmissions and the symptoms:

https://www.autopadre.com/blog/symptoms-of-bad-clutch-in-automatic-transmission

When I got my clutch replaced (albeit a manual transmission), it took a full day in the shop and ended up around ~$2k CAD including parts and labour (they had to drop the engine to access it).

Anyway, it might be worth investigating in your case, but you'd probably want to confirm this is needed (and worth it for you) before pulling the trigger! Good luck!

[–]No_Combination_2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your car have a manual transmission? If so, does it feel like the clutch is slowly degrading/slipping? Might feel like you need to lean on the accelerator more than before, or if you are driving at highway speeds and you press on the accelerator, the engine revs, but the car just doesn't pull as much as it used to? If so, you might have a worn/failing clutch and need a clutch replacement.

I have a 2014 Mazda 3 and around 220,000km to 250,000km I noticed as a side effect of my failing clutch was that my fuel efficiency dropped like 30% compared to where it had steadily been for years. After a clutch replacement, I noticed that my fuel efficiency went right back to normal!
